I wouldn't put the likelihood too high. The one in Joplin submitted the request in 2008, thats awhile ago. Maybe someone else who knows a bit more could chime in, but thats just my $0.02.

I would like to find out more about Southern Utah University's plans, but the COCA application page you refer to is the only thing about the school that I can find. I think it would be a really great location for a new DO school, especially a state DO school. U of U doesn't have nearly enough seats, considering the # of applicants from Utah who would like to stay there.

does somebody want to tell me how the hell a freaking vo-tech nursing program can think about opening up a freaking medical school?

in case you missed it, check out this little gem -- Applicant Status - Center for Allied Health Nursing Education.

Please tell me this is a joke. Rocky Vista was bad enough.

Yeah man that is pretty bad. However, it being listed on the AOA page just means that they are applying for it. Nothing else. For all we know the people at COCA can be laughing just as hard as you about it.

Woooooow, I'm speechless.

I had no idea that there were so many schools out there applying to do this, even one as recent as this past January. Interesting....I mean I want to see more DO schools in existence, but this is a LOT if a majority of these were to go through. Residency programs are slowly opening up, but not at a rate to keep up with that kind of growth I'd say, especially considering expansion occurring in allopathic class sizes too. Yikes.

Yes, Utah would be a good place for another school, but Cedar City?! Really?

Yep, it seems anyone and their dog can get on that "applicant" list. The verbiage does say that it's basically a receiving log.

If even 5 of these schools get up and running in the next 2-3 years, residency will become one really competitive thing. The Caribbean will also disappear as a realistic choice for people.

Come on now, Cedar City really isn't too bad. Close to Moab for all your outdoor needs, close to Vegas for all your pleasure needs, and just big enough so you don't go crazy in town. I'd be more worried about where rotations would take place. There are quite a few medical centers in southern Utah. You have Valley View in Cedar City, A couple hospitals in St. George, and a few smaller ones in the surrounding community. I think it should be enough as long as the class size is not too large.

The biggest challenge to getting this school started is convincing the Utah legislature to fund it. This is the same legislature that a few years back refused to give the University of Utah MD school the funds they asked for and the school responded by cutting 20 of its 102 seats. I don't see this happening for a while.

Cedar City is in an awesome area, I agree with that. My concern was about rotations as well. However, I guess some other D.O. schools are set up in smaller areas and still get the job done.

If I could go to Medical School that close to Zion National Park, I'd be all set! The landscape to the south and east of Cedar City is some of the most beautiful anywhere. My family originates from Cedar City, Springdale, and Parowan though so I've got a lot of sentimental connections to the area.

As long as they don't open in Fall of 2013 (already too many schools doing that), I don't care, lol.

What am I missing here? All I see on that link is a nursing school.

If you look at the document in the link that the OP posted it will show that this nursing school is applying for COCA accreditation for an osteopathic school
