New Schools for 2012 Application: MOSDOH, UNE, UofU

These are the three schools confirmed or anticipated to be participating in the AADSAS 2012 application cycle for Fall 2013 matriculation. Info on the new schools is a little sparse and scattered (especially UofU). Share your input, comments, corrections, whatever. This is meant to be informational for applicants, not a doom-and-gloom-of-dentistry debate. Here's a little summary of interesting/informational stuff I've come across (open to correction).

ATSU’S Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health (MOSDOH) - Kirksville, MO
- DMD degree
- ~ 40 seats in first class (possibly the 2nd class too; not sure of future capacity)
- curriculum will be modeled on that of ASDOH (heavy external CHC rotations)
- first two years on ATSU’s Kirksville, Mo. campus
- clinic in St. Louis for third-year dental students
- third and fourth year students will study in CHCs across Missouri
- $70 secondary app fee

University of New England's College of Dental Medicine - Portland, ME
- DMD degree
- ~40 seats ("with at least 40 students per class"); clinic will have 44 operatories
- preference to ME, NH, VT residents
- curriculum may be modeled after Western U (Western's inaugural dean is running the show)
- fourth year students will be placed in CHCs throughout the state for extended rotations (3+ months)
- applicants must submit a letter(s) verifying their community services as part of the app process

University of Utah School of Dentistry - Salt Lake City, UT
- DDS degree
- "cohort of 20 students" in first class (accommodate cohort classes as large as 50 students)
- tuition for dental school will be the same as the U medical school (currently $28,735)
- expect to be Creighton-style curriculum for now; (25% of it is already in place as UofU has been handling select D1s for 20+ years through RDEP)

For those interested MOSDOH and UNE will also both be offering an optional, concurrent MPH as well. At least from what i have heard....

There is also a rumor that MOSDOH will not appear on the AADSAS application, it will be a direct application for the school. Can anyone verify this rumor?

Also, in an old thread a current ASDOH student said there was a possibility of the entire first class getting scholarships for the whole first year at MOSDOH....

Also, I heard that the class size is going to be small, like 40 students. There even was mention of the first class receiving full scholarships for the first years tuition. Not everything is finalized yet though, so this is just what I was told


On a side note we're also getting a maxillofacial prosthodontic fellowship on campus in Mesa since the new MD Anderson cancer center is opening up down the street w/ Banner.

Might just have to wait for June 4 to see which of these three really show up. MOSDOH was the only one listed on the What's New for 2013. But that doesn't really guarantee much.

A lot of the push for this school was the lack of care in the area. So I assume they might try to select those more likely to stay in the area after graduation. This is all I could find on the matter:

"While there is no formula to determine where students will choose to live after graduation, the Missouri dental program will have an emphasis on recruiting qualified students from rural regions in Missouri and the Midwest."


For this cycle, I'd guess MOSDOH is probably the most OOS friendly of the three schools though.

They say this, but it could just be an invitation for your fee like other schools who say the same thing yet seem to have a lack of love for Canadians.

Does state residency play a role in admissions?
Prospective students from across the United States, Canada and abroad apply to the University of New England.
