Just got my USMLE Step 2CK score today and I am really confused. My two digit score last year was 99, this year it's 87 even though I got a higher three digit score than my step 2 score. Also it says the average is 233 with a standard deviation of 22; previous years it said the average was around 220-222 with a standard deviation of 20 or so.
I thought they kept the average score around 220?? So then, last year's 240 is equal to this year's 255? and last year's 260 is equal to this years 277? that sounds a bit outrageous. Can anyone explain this new scoring system?

The two-digit scoring system was revamped last year. It's now both meaningless and no longer reported, so it matters very little.

The three-digit scale is not adjusted to keep the mean persistent, as it is with COMLEX, so the mean keeps creeping up. Based on your report, to have scored a standard deviation above your peers, it now requires 255.

3 digit and average not change
for the last 3 year I know and ask my firend that average is
step 1 --- 222
step 2 ---233
so basically nothing change except the 2 digit score . which is not reported to programs any more

I wonder if the increase in the mean is reflective of more (good test takers) taking it early and really trying for a high score, as opposed to taking it late in the year with a goal of just passing.

When you get your score report and they show an average score, isn't that just the average for your cohort of test takers? I mean it should presumably be very consistent amongst groups but still, the "average" isn't the national average.
