Saw this on TV Squad...looks like it's being picked up by NBC. The story of our lives, right? Premise is cool, hopefully the show turns out great!

* Animal Kingdom, a single-camera office comedy centered on a House-like veterinarian, who loves animals but usually hates their owners.

Story of our lives, maybe, but the "usually hates their owners" part may not do much for our already degrading public image (ie. hateful money grubbing robbers). Does sound fun though if you don't take it too seriously.

True, but it is being marketed as a comedy, so I think we're pretty safe. If it were a drama, we'd be in more trouble 😛

Ooh! This sounds interesting, I'd definitely would watch that.

Funny I mentioned that it would be cool if House were a vet...

Ever seen "The Incredible Dr. Pol"? on NatGeoWild? Pretty good show about an old school mixed practice vet.

I've seen that show a few times. Reminds me of my own vet!

I haven't seen the show itself, but the clips I've seen online look like nothing short of malpractice!!

Hopefully it will air online somewhere since I am cable-less

Hopefully it will air at all.

Ordering a pilot means very little in the tv world.

It definitely has potential as a novel idea, and certainly potential for a wide audience.. We'll know in a year or two whether the producers can execute it properly :xf:

I've watched all of the Dr. Pol episodes that have aired so far (not sure if it's still on??), and I "mostly" agree with his way of practicing. He's definitely in it for the right reasons and isn't out to drain his client's wallet. But, some of the stuff he does seems too "quick" - meaning he just makes a quick diagnosis and then comes up with a quick fix. I don't know...maybe we're only seeing bits and pieces of each case though. I do love the dog that came in 2 days in a row with porcupine quills all over his face...poor guy, but very funny!

Examples of things that gave me the willies...

- Doing surgery (a tail amputation, I think?) with what appeared to be no inhalant anesthesia and definitely no anesthetic monitoring.
- Sending dogs home still sedated in the back of a pickup truck.
- A sedated dog left lying unattended/unmonitored on a table.

Those are just a few examples that I saw on youtube. Hopefully the show got pulled. There were a number of vets from VIN and the AVMA that were looking into alerting his state board about his lack of adherence to medical standards.... not fair to his clients (who probably don't realize how inadequate his care is) and definitely not the way I want us portrayed in the media!!

As it is, I spend all day trying to educate clients on WHY it's important to do pre-anesthetic bloodwork, use safe anesthetic drugs, monitor anesthetized patients appropriately, etc. There are a number of cheapo Dr-Pol-style vets in my area... the clients flock to them, thinking they're so kind and generous, while those vets laugh all the way to the bank!! (Yes, I've searched the property tax records... one vet who everyone tells me is the cheapest, most generous guy in town lives in nearly a million-dollar house. High volume = high income, especially when you limit yourself to only taking the quick/easy cases!!)

Yeah, that's why I mentioned he is "old school" lol... I guess I just like his way of thinking. I know not all clients want everything to be investigated fully and can't always afford it, so for some, he is just what they are looking for. That old school way of trying something out and seeing how it goes, and coming back if it doesn't work, is the conservative route some look for I guess... Not to mention, he seems to have the type of clients that won't up and sue him or look for anyway to ruin him if something goes wrong. We have to remember how different certain areas are, and I think he fits the needs of that area perfectly.

Hulu usually has many of the NBC programs - we stream to our TV with netflix and Hulu Plus and I LOVE IT! So much cheaper than cable and I get to watch pretty much everything I like whenever I want

Netflix doesn't have Mean Girls. I was (and still am) so disappointed when I found out.

In regards to Dr. Pol, I have watched a few clips and he reminds me of a vet I used to work for, except he seems to be much nicer to people. Some of the methods my old boss used could be called "old school" but IMO zero monitoring while an animal is undergoing surgery is unacceptable. While at the time I didn't know any better because this was my first vet experience, looking back, there are many things that my boss should have been sued for. Fortunately for him, most of the locals didn't know any better either. I just read this blog post on VBB and completely agree. I understand that there are many places where people cannot afford more than basic pet care. But, I come from a place like that and know many vets who manage to practice quality vet med and still keep costs low.

I'm excited for Animal Kingdom, if/when it airs!
