There is a brand new wal-mart being built right now in my town! I'd say it'll be open this October! I am not certified pharmacy tech. Should I become certified before I apply, or can I just apply with 0 pharmacy experience? Also, could I be hired part-time as a Pharm Tech, working only 3-4 days? I bet if I listed that I am a Pre-Pharm student, I could get hired. What do you all think?

So...I really need some advice...Do I need to just talk to the new pharmacist or...?...Does anyone have good advice please?

Advice? How about this: THINK FOR YOURSELF.

Good heavens, man-- you're getting ready to enter a graduate/professional program, and you need input from others on whether or not to apply for a certain job? If you can't answer that for yourself, maybe you shjould step back on this other big step in your life.

Haha, I already did right after I posted. So you can take your negativity and shove it.

Grow up. This is the real world, and I might be the one who makes the hiring decision on you.

Surprise!

I've applied to pharmacy telling them I'm pre-pharm, and it didn't work.

Your chances are much higher once you're certified I'd say.

BTW Love the avatar

eelo...why would you be hiring me? You have no power over me, so get over yourself. That was stupid of you to come on my thread and post your negative comment. But good luck to you. I hope you don't treat your patients negatively when they have a question to ask you. If you are going to be so extremely rude and negative about such a little thing (aka my thread that was ONLY asking for advice), then that is how you probably will treat your co-workers and every other little thing that bothers you. Good Day.

Listing that you are a pre-pharmacy helps, but it's better to talk with the pharmacist that will be hiring. Tell them that you are interested in going to pharmacy school and that you need experience in a pharmacy so that you will know more about having a career in pharmacy.

The only person you should be asking for advice for this is the hiring manager. It doesn't matter what we think, what will happen, will happen regardless. These people who do the hiring are very approachable. They will find out your motivations sooner or later.

I'm not being negative, this is just what I'd do given the same situation.

Also, please give us more time before bumping your post.

Do not work at wal-mart. If you want to hate the pharmacy profession and kill your desire of becoming a pharmacist, you would work at wal-mart. I would apply elsewhere. That's my advice.

My first tech experience(had a lot of previous volunteer work) was at WM. I thought it was cool! Its not always the company you work for, it is the people, mainly the pharmacy manager you work for that makes the experience good or bad. I emphasized the manager because they set the tone in the work environment.

Good heavens, man! How many years of pharmacy until I'm as bitter and nasty as you??

Um, what part of my comment was bitter or nasty? Bitchy I'll give ya, but bitter and nasty? No. Try 'realistic.'

Now then, I have no idea how many years of pharmacy it will take for you to gain a realistic outlook on life and growing up. I can't answer that because my background is in healthcare, but not specifically in pharmacy. I'm now in education, so trust me, I can recognize a defensive middle-school style retort (that would be yours) to a realistic response (see mine).

Someone who is attempting to attain a graduate/professional school education should be long past asking others for advice on whether to take a $9-an-hour job or not. If this person is not at the point in life where s/he can answer that question for him/herself, then I would say that higher-level education is not appropriate at this time.

In other words, there's a lot of growing up to do between there and here.

Amen.

I've just ended an enlightening summer internship. I applied for the job because the company had given me a nice no-strings scholarship. But I did so with some hesitation because I had a bad impression of said company.

My impression of the corporation hasn't changed so much. But my feelings about retail pharmacy have changed to more positive. It's true that it's the pharmacist that makes the work environment in the pharmacy positive or negative. It has everything to do with organizational skills, support and respect for staff, concern for patients, ability to manage difficult people, and outlook on the profession. I've had good and bad experiences across the district and even in the same pharmacy.

I have a personal bias against Walmart that I cannot overcome, so I would never work there - but somebody has to. It may as well be you.

I agree with you 100%. Not sure why you have the grudge, but I do understand. Somethings are forgivable but not forgettable and can cause a person to not want to associate themselves with whomever. I dont have a problem with WM, but I am not sure if thats where I will practice when I graduate. I have experienced good and bad retail, and I think I can handle it at WM or elsewhere. I dont have any other pharmacy experience, so I cant wait until rotations. I may even try to intern at a hospital next summer.
