Hey all, I have a few questions about the NYS license. On the site, it says it's valid for life unless revoked. Does that mean there is no renewal fee?

I'm just trying to figure out if it's worthwhile to pay $735 to get my license now since it won't add much to my day-to-day training (currently PGY-2 and completed Step1-3).

Regarding the Child Abuse and Infection control course, I vaguely remember doing something like that prior to starting residency. Would that exempt me from having to do it again?

Thanks!

There are only 3 reasons to get an unrestricted license during your training:
1. You want to moonlight.
2. Your program/institution/state requires it.
3. It's the same cost to you as a training license would be (this was the case in my state).

Otherwise wait until your final year of training and save some money.

-NY state does not require a training license.
-If you want to moonlight in NY state, you must be an American citizen/permanent resident who graduated from an American University and who has finished PGY-1 year. your program itself may have additional requirements. If you went to a foreign medical school - including the Caribean schools - you will not get your NY license until you graduate from residency (or 3 years of residency), even if you apply early.
-NYS requires frequent renewals, and love to increase prices.
-I also took a similar course for infection in residency, but had to retake one for the license - I did it online. For child abuse, NY state recognized my residency training.

I'm a pgy2 in my 2nd year of postgraduate training but still a PL1, meaning haven't been advanced to 2nd year yet as my training was extended. Anyone know if can get a license in nys if have taken all 3 steps?

As website lists:
"you must complete at least one year of postgraduate hospital training in an accredited residency"

So it's vague if 1 year of training or get credit for the year..
Thanks

You will probably have to have a certification of completion of PGY-1.
