I have an interview at UMDNJ-Newark for anesthesia residency. I wanted to know if anyone could tell me about Newark the city. I am not from the east coast so I am pretty unfamiliar with the area. Decent place to live or not so good? I am a single guy and want to end up in a city that is fun and a good place to meet other people (unlike my current location where everyone is married).

My other question concerning that interview is how hard is it to get to Newark from NYC? I have a hotel in Gramercy, will have to head to NJMS for my interview from 745-1pm, then go back to my hotel and change before going to a dinner in Manhattan for another program's dinner. Is that reasonable? Like I said, I am not from the area and really have no idea.

Sorry this topic is not directly related to anesthesia, but I do not know anyone familiar with the area. Feel free to reply to this or send me a PM. Any advice would help. Thanks in advance.

It's Newark. It has gotten better since the riots in the 60s, and the area around UMDNJ has gotten a lot nicer over the last few years. Crime still sucks, but I'm sure they get a boatload of penetrating trauma.

Anyway, you can take a shuttle/bus/taxi over to the Newark Penn Station jump on the PATH and take that to NYC. Shouldn't take more than an hour thirty, give or take. The train ride is only 30-40 minutes.

Newark is still a rough city. I was there for 4 years plus 1 for internship. Penetrating and blunt trauma is pretty common. ASA 3-4 is the norm. The area immediately around the university is pretty safe, though. Most Residents do not live in Newark itself, but in one of the nearby cities: Bloomfield, Montclair, Hoboken, Jersey City, South or West Orange, Lyndhurst, Nutley, etc. A few reverse commute from NYC. NJ Transit and the Path both go into the city from Newark, but honestly, having a car is probably necessary. Avoid living directly within the city if you can; it is totally unnecessary.

If I recall correctly, interviewees stay at one of the nice hotels in downtown Newark. The Double Treat or something like that, at a discounted rate. It is across the street from Newark Penn Station, which has a shuttle bus directly to the university. You could stay in the city and still make it to UMDNJ on time; just take a train or the Path to Newark Penn and the shuttle bus over. It sounds like a lot of unnecessary travel on an interview day if you ask me.

Hope that helps.
