Hi all:

I am really new but am seeking good information/a good website pdf that outlines the pre-reqs for OT schools. Basically I am confused as to whether OT schools want science core classes, and if so, what do they require (i.e. ochem, physics, etc.). Is there an excel or doc. that outlines all the requirements that leads to a doctorate in OT? It would be extremely helpful as I realize a lot of different schools require different things.

Thank you and I would appreciate any help. I am a biology major - is that a good choice of major for an OT program and would they consider the rigor of this major?

I know each school has different requirements. For the most part, I think developmental psych, intro sociology, intro anthropology, anatomy, physiology, stats, and medical terminology are pretty universal amongst the schools, but many require more. I would go to the school websites and make your own list of prereqs or perhaps AOTA may have some information as well...

Honestly, there are so many programs that require different pre-reqs, but the most common that I have seen thus far are: A and P, English, Medical Terminology, anthropology, sociology, or social psychology, statistics. I would recommend taking these courses at a community college if you are out of undergrad.
I believe that biology is a good major to have for OT but I would take some psychology courses as well.
Maybe someone can find a pdf file outlining all of the pre-req's but I'm pretty sure you have to go to that particular schools website.

Definitely take anatomy and physiology, intro to psych, abnormal psych, med term, intro to sociology, and statistics.

Taking biology, physics, and developmental psych/lifespan development will be beneficial because it will open you up to more schools.

Don't worry about the bio degree. I was a plant bio major and took most of my prereqs at a junior college after I had already done my 4 year degree. I ended up having to take anatomy and physio, abnormal psych, lifespan development psych, and a 3d art class. I'm also taking medical terminology, but it was optional. As far as intro to anthropology and sociology go, I was able to sub in a critical thinking class for socio and a class called religion in american lives for anthro. So if your college made you take social science classes in order to graduate, those may qualify. I had roughly a 3.7 GPA for my degree and prereqs, but only 40 or so observation hours. I did have good letters of rec though and I work as a tutor for anatomy and physio. I got in to both of the schools in Cal that I applied to and got the impression that they liked that I was heavily science based (and liked that I tutored). Not all schools require it, but take the GRE as well. They seem to focus mostly on your english and writing scores.

check out the AOTA website, it has a lot of good info and advice as well.
