Hey everyone---
I've been reading the posts on SDN for a while now, and decided that it was time to jump in and really actively participate. Anyway, here are some things about me, followed by a question for all of you.

Overall GPA : 3.22
Science:3.0
Major:3.88
Major in Spanish, minor in Biochemistry

Taking the MCAT in April

I have about a 2 page single-spaced list of extracurricular, including volunteering in an ER, reading books on tape for blind students, working as a peer educator in the wellness center, missions trips, student government. I have been a CNA for over 2 years, and am now finishing up certification to be a phlebotomist. I have been shadowing a wonderful DO for about 9 months now, and have connected with various other MDs while working at the hospital.

Here's the problem: I started out as music for 3 years, because I fell into the trap of "Do what you're good at". I became tired of being able to coast through college on what I already knew coming into it. Then I remembered that I had wanted to be a doctor since I was 5 years old, and just chose music because I was good at it, and it seemed natural to continue in music. However, I never felt as if I was 'one of them' and since the switch to premed, have never felt more at home. I have done all the prereq's, including some extra biochemistry for electives.

Questions: Will ADCOMS look at my first 3 years and the switch and decide that I'm the sort of person that has a hard time dedicating himself to one thing? Can I explain this in the personal statement?
How much of an advantage is being fluent in Spanish, in comparison to other applicants?
I'd love to live in Chicago---anyone have any thoughts on CCOM?

Finally, I'd just like to say that SDN is a great thing, and everyone seems genuinely to want to help.

Well it sounds like you EC's are strong, although you overall GPA could be little higher. My advice is to do the best you possibly can on the MCAT. Don't shoot for a 26 or 28 like most people will tell you, instead study for a 45 (although it probably impossible). As far as switching majors, I don't believe they will down upon the decision. I finished my Masters in Molecular Genetics and then began a PhD program in Cell and Molecular Biology. After one year in the program I decide I wanted help the patient and not just work on diseases and medications for the rest of my life. It will only add to your character and create a well rounded individual.

The Spanish major is something that is highly needed in hospitals today, especially Chicago. In the ER where I volunteer, I notice that only one of the doctors speaks fluent Spanish which makes it difficult to work with patients without a translator. I am originally from the Chicago area and let me tell you its the best city in the country. However, when accepted I will most likely chose another school because of the fact that I want to additional research in a separate field while going to attending school. Overall, it sounds like you will have no problem getting into DO schools so long as you perfrom on the MCAT.

You're number are good. They are not spectacular, but it sounds like your motivation definitely is. You sound like you have a strong desire to be a physician, and you have obviously shown that you are hard-working and dedicated through your EC's.

Of course you want to do well on the MCAT, but you should definitely apply. Our numbers are pretty similar and I will be attending CCOM this fall!

CCOM is a great school. I'm sure you would love it. And Chicago is an incredible city and one of the best places to study medicine in the country.

If you have more questions feel free to PM me.

spanish speaking is huge! your extras are great, do a solid score on mcat, apply early, get that lor from the DO, be yourself and express your diversity and interests, I believe you are in very good shape...adcoms like people who are forthright and honest so don't sweat the 3 years of music, I think it helps! Good Luck!
