Newbie Intro

Hi All,

New to this forum and am definitely a non-trad. Got 3.66 GPA in high school, barely scraped by in first 2 years of uni. Started my family early and switched gears to pharmacy tech for 5+ years. Continued family (3 years) and have now been working as a medical transcriptionist for 4 years.

I've been out of traditional postsecondary for 10+ years. My question is whether I should really focus on some refresher courses at CC before jumping in head first. I know my background will help tremendously with the medicine side, but scared ****less😱 that I've forgotten everything else.

I've got an appt. with the consellor this week to firm up my plans, but any advise you all could give would be great!!! I might be a tad crazy for starting all this now at 31 with 3 kids, but its now or never.

getting a refresher course in bio, chem, physics, etc. is a good idea. this will help you when you need to study and take the mcat exam later on.

also i would recommend you to have some volunteer experience in either a clinic or a hospital setting. having experience as a medical transcriptionist is not the same as being on the floor and interacting with patients as well as nurses and physicians. if you do enjoy the atmosphere then great 👍

as long as you have the will and the motivation then i say you're good to go 🙂

Thanks for the input. I do have some experience working in hopsital as a pharm tech, but always good to get something more recent. I know I love the hospital environment. Now just to make the time.

You have tons of pharm tech experience. Any interest in becoming a pharmacist, could be a quicker route or your not interested in that at all?

If you are thinking of pharmacy, remember it is more of an order following profession than order giving. It is a good profession however, but if you decide to do it understand what you are in for.

I appreciate the suggestion all. It is something that has definitely been considered thoroughly with P&C list, etc.

Unfortunately there isn't a pharm program in my city atm. It would be a consideration, but we aren't prepared to move the kids just yet. If the plan all works out I'm sure I'll be moving for some med school rotation and/or residency farther down the line.

They are just opening up a satellite MD program to help train and keep rural physicians (not that my city is rural by any means). While I have thought about pharm school, it isn't where my heart is. There isn't enough patient interaction.
