Hey I am looking into becoming a dentist and wanted to know a few things?
1. what are some of the worst things about being a dentist
2. what are some of the worst things about Dental School
3. Do dentist have malpractice insurance like MD's if so what is the average cost?
4. I read in the 2005-2006 US Outlook handbook that the field of dentisty is growing slower than average...thus the future of dentistry could be shaky is this true or is it just a matter of where one practice?

5. Is it true that come 2007 dental Students will be required to do a residency?

1. what are some of the worst things about being a dentist
- Dealing with insurance companies, Chronic back/shoulder pain, etc

2. what are some of the worst things about Dental School
- It sucks, it's hard, takes work, and it's 4 years long

3. Do dentist have malpractice insurance like MD's if so what is the average cost?
- Yes, usually it's 2-3k for 2-5 million

4. I read in the 2005-2006 US Outlook handbook that the field of dentisty is growing slower than average...thus the future of dentistry could be shaky is this true or is it just a matter of where one practice?
- no, more dentists are retiring in the years to come which will lead to a higher demand for new dentists. Supposedly the next 30-40 years will be the "golden age" of dentistry

5. Is it true that come 2007 dental Students will be required to do a residency?
- some states require a year residency following graduation prior to full licensure

as a followup... is there a list of schools that require a residency?

so far it is only the state of New York that has the mandatory residency

Figures!!! Now that I'm thinking of doing dentistry . . .

Maybe there's still time to move to NJ or CT!

This is something that really concerns me, as I had a motorcycle wreck and injured my back almost a year ago. It's fine now, but I worry about twenty years from now (arthritis, etc). Any hints on how to take care of the back (does anyone use any kind of brace/support to help them while they are spending so much time hunched over), or does it come down to just maintain good posture? Maybe working out the back more to build up those muscles? Thanks for any suggestions/things anyone's tried. 👍

NY requires the residency if you are a new graduate and going to practice in NY.

Is this only if you are going to practice in NY? How long is the residency..1 year? Also, what if you plan to specialize? Is this residency required in addition to the specialty or is it just for those who plan to be a general practitioner? Sorry for the 20 Q's...any response appreciated 🙂
