Hey folks,

I was a columnist for my school newspaper, and I was wondering if I should include it as an EC. I am asking because I didn't really write about anything serious, in fact, a lot of it was satirical/parody kind of stuff. I didn't write anything vulgar or offensive, but I was wondering if it would be appropriate to claim this as an EC on AMCAS. Thanks.

I was an entertainment columnist for my school's newspaper, and I definitely made sure to list it as an EC. I wrote about TV, music, movies, etc. Make sure you include it (assuming you have room to) as an EC, it shows that you have diverse interests and skills outside of science and medicine, which makes you a well-rounded person. Adcoms love that stuff 🙂

Agreed. Adcoms love weird stuff. List it proudly!

Did they ask to see any of your columns?

Nope, but I would have been happy to provide them if they did. I listed my editor as the contact person on my AMCAS thought. I'm not sure if this happened or my brain is making it up, but the only question I ever got about it in an interview was how I ended up getting that position or being interested in it. While I'm sure it helped me, it was never a make-or-break issue (which is how it should be).
