Hi,

So I had some question and needed some advice on the tutor that I currently have, and The Next Step tutors. I am having some difficulty choosing which one I should choose and I don't want to regret it in the future. So here are the positives and negatives of the tutor and Next Step Tutors.

My tutor: (I have only been tutoring with him for total of 6 hours)
1. He lives close by so we usually have a one on one tutoring for an hour or two at the library
2. scored 30+ 0n the MCAT. (will be a medical school student this coming fall)
3. Charges $35
4. Has had tutoring experience (But I think I am probably his 2nd MCAT student)

The problem:
We are mostly going over content, and a couple verbal passages. I feel like it isn't helping as much as I thought it would be. I mean he is teaching me content but I feel like I can learn this content by someone teaching me on youtube or something. Is a tutor supposed to be teaching content or going over practice problems? I took my MCAT last year and I just graduated but I received a very low score. It is obvious I am week in content areas but I just have a lot of problems trying to review (need a review method to review my notes 🙁 . This tutor is making me go over 40 (all 4 subjects from TPR) chapters in 30 days, and I feel like I am going to have a burnout. After that I am going to be doing practice exams (My exam is in beginning of Aug.)

Next Step:
1. Online based
2. They all scored about a 35+
3. REALLY expensive though. Like $100 an hour
4. Apparently everyone tutor has loads of tutoring experiences and each tutor is tailored to you.

The problem:
They seem to have a lot of experience in MCAT tutoring but I am kinda confused if only 2 hours a week is enough with their 24 hour comprehensive plan. I am not sure if I should go with this tutoring company compared to my tutor (can tutor me almost every day for 2 hours for the next two months and still will be cheaper than Next Step)

If anyone can give me some advice that I would be great. I only have about two months until my exam and I spoke with a next step adviser and they said they can bring my score up by a couple of points (I just need 3 more points) within two months.

Thanks in advance!

Hello!

As an educator myself, I couldn't help notice that your tutor is making you do things a certain way. If you aren't getting what you're needing, before paying for a more expensive tutor, I would highly encourage you to advocate for yourself. Specifically, you need to have a conversation with your tutor and tell them what you want to get out of tutoring and what you want to do with tutoring. Then, you need to prepare for tutoring. Just sitting there working problems or letting them lead isn't going to give you what you need. Instead, get yourself a subscription to Chad's videos and a good practice book, like TPRH or EK. Then work many problems until you develop a list of the ones that are tripping you up. THOSE are the ones to work on with your tutor.
