NHSC APPLICATION 2014/2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I feel the same way. My portal still says, "Not accepted for award," and I got the rejection email, but I also got the two congratulations emails before that one and the email that explained the portal was down and said anyone who received the congratulations email did get the award. I called the NHSC toll free number and they told me to disregard all of my emails. I also got another email from my Program Support Officer later this morning saying congrats on receiving the scholarship, so I called him and he said I did get it. The portal still won't let me log on and still says, "not accepted," though. Has anyone else heard from their Program Support Officer? I don't know what to think at this point.

I also got an email from my PSO welcoming me to the corps and providing a list of things she can help me with. Someone mentioned in an earlier post that the portal won't be updated until after 24 hours so hopefully by tomorrow morning it's fixed.

For the finalists who were having technical difficulties with the portal, it's fixed now. Check your portals!

What do you mean by fixed? Mine is back to saying that I've accepted the award but it's under review... I think technology just hates me.

Technology must hate both of us...mine says the same thing and I can't log into the portal. Oh well, under final review is better than rejected status. Hopefully the portal will work by the end of the day tomorrow.

Mine changed to the welcome page so I assumed the problem was fixed. Maybe they're still working on the conversion. Are you guys using the link in the congratulations email?

Yeah, I'm using the link in the email and it says that I can't sign in because I'm not a participant.

Mine was updated this morning, so I think there might just be some lag time. Just keep checking 🙂

as a scholar....are we allowed to apply for other scholarships?

anyone else still having difficulty? I am still not able to access my account--I can't believe its real until I get access, lol.

Does anyone have information about how many students applied this year and how many were chosen as scholars?

Email from HRSA said over 1800 applied and 192 scholarships were given this year. Also, my portal was updated on Saturday morning to participant! Hopefully everyone else's has been updated as well. Congrats to you all!

does anyone know when exactly ORC/monthly stipend payments came through for last years winners?

I got an email on Wednesday saying that I will receive one lump some payment by November 7 for the first 4 months. After that the monthly stipend will be $1304 before taxes and it will be deposited in my bank account at the end of every month. The annual ORC (other reasonable costs) payment will be a one time annual payment with the first payment of the year. Tuition and fees are paid directly to the school. On the portal there are instructions for you to print out and give to your school so your school can send an invoice to NHSC as soon as possible.

Does anyone know if you have to work in the state you applied from after we graduate? Or can we go to any HPSA site that needs people?

It's the national health service corps. You can go to any approved site in the country.

im just curious....so if we find an opening at a site in a different state, we first need to complete the boards for that state and then move there to start working?....because it might take months to get it approved for the boards and by that time that clinic might have already fill in that position.

Well, first off, since this is in the "Dental Forums" section of SDN, I am going to assume that you are a dental student (although I know that's not always the case). If that is the case, then a job being in a different state wouldn't be too big of a deal since our clinical exams are regional and cover multiple states. Most schools offer multiple exams which broadens your licensing potential even further. You should be more or less covered.

If not and there are still difficulties (or you are not a dental student and go by a process that is not similar to dental), the NHSC scholarship allows for 6 months from the time of graduation to find a job and begin your service repayment. That should give you time to figure things out. If you know that it will take a few months to get things squared away with all that, then you should let the site know when you interview and they can decide if they will wait for you. They probably won't offer you the job if they have a problem with that which would take the race out of it.

If there are still roadblocks after that, you are just not meant for a job in that state.

Thanks for the reply.

Does anyone know about how long it takes the NHSC to pay the first semester payment once our school invoices it? I had already paid my tuition this semester, but they won't give me a refund on it until they've received the payment from NHSC.

Last year, they paid tuition, ORC and stipends by the end of October.. Since then, they have kept up on my stipends, but they have really slacked with my tuition. They didn't pay my spring or summer tuition until September. Good thing my school is pretty lenient on that and refunds my loans immediately anyway.

Dumb question incoming. Is the living stipend counted as financial aid (thereby disqualifying you from any additional aid if you felt the living stipend was insufficient?)

Since it's taxed income my gut response is no... but wondering if anyone actually knows?

NHSC: They are paying back only the loans for tuition or the complete "estimated cost" loan that includes housing, transportation, food etc? On top of that the give you a stipend?

Three things. 1- Your tuition and fees. 2 - "other reasonable costs" a lump sum reflecting specified costs you might incur (e.g. buying tools or a laptop, etc). 3 - a living stipend paid monthly. It works out to be a fair amount, but for me is still below the total estimated cost of attendance.

Are you still able to manage your expenses accordingly with the stipend?

No, it is not counted as financial aid. It is deposited straight into your bank account and is not reported to the school and not considered financial aid.

True, so how are you handling your expenses now?

The OCR + stipend + the tuition actually evens out almost perfectly for me. It also gives me room within my financial aid availability to take out extra loans if unexpected expenses come up. I choose to take out some of that because finances stress me out and if the scholarship is paying $200,000+, I figure $20,000 in loans after 4 years isn't too bad.

Anyway, the financial aid office told me that most people are able to make everything work on the scholarship without pulling out any loans. Does that answer your question?

Thanks Cooliyak. This was my thought process as well. Now I just have to fight my financial aid officer who insists that it is financial aid.

I was curious about this and so I did a little more research and found that it is actually totally up to the school as to whether or not they want to reduce your financial aid because of the stipend. Mine apparently doesn't care, but if yours does, I guess that is within their power. Lame, but that is their prerogative.

have anyones ORC and stipend payments gone through yet?

This stinks. It's only for citizens I wish it was for permanent residents as well . I would like to give this a try. Oh well

I got mine as well! Remember in the words of Spider-Man's Uncle Ben, "with great power comes great responsibility." Don't blow all your money at once 😛

So how exactly does this work. I already plan on going back to a rural area and opening a private practice. If I got this scholarship would I have to work in a clinic or something other than a PP? Would I get the salary I earned or would they decide it for me?

You can work in private or group practice as long as it is in an underserved/rural area as defined by the NHSC and you have prior approval for the "Private Practice Option" (PPO).

I also plan to work in private practice in a rural area.

There is more information in the scholarship program application guide or you can search the NHSC's website for "private practice" and the first hit will be the form with all of the information.

does anyone know where to find our good standing forms for the end of the semester and when they are due by?

I was just accepted to dental school. When can I apply for the scholarship?

Applicantions were due by mid-may last year, I can't remember when they opened. Maybe January? Either way, you've got until May.... you're in no hurry.

Does anyone know what the current HPSA score is for the NHSC scholar program right now?
