I was just looking over some of the requirements for the NHSC program, for which I think I would be a great candidate, when I got to this form:

http://www.nhsc.hrsa.gov/downloads/disadvantagedbackground.pdf

Do you think it is make or break if I don't qualify for any of those requirements for a disadvantaged background? I have done a lot of volunteering with local communities with various dental organizations, will that be enough to make me competitive?

I've heard there's only about 15-20 per year for dental students. So it doesn't hurt to apply but I wouldn't count on it, make sure you are okay with whatever your alternative would be if you don't get it.

im in the same boat...did u ever find out what their selection criterias are?

It looks like they list their selection factors on page 7 that doesn't even reference a disadvantaged background, but then on page 8 they have funding priorities that definitely suggests that disadvantaged backgrounds are important...

http://www.nhsc.hrsa.gov/downloads/spapplicationguide.pdf

I guess it doesn't look good...haha

A few of the ppl I've talked to who got it were not disadvantaged. That said it wouldn't hurt, but that the whole scholarship is super vague about qualifications

Do they give the scholarship out to white males? I called them (twice) and neither of the individuals I spoke with had this information. The second time I called I waited like a couple of hours on hold until I got through. They were friendly enough to speak with but not all that helpful.

On the NHSC website they have the typical boilerplate requisite disclaimer about "non-discrimination" but then a few clicks in to their website they were boasting about how scholarships are going to a disproportionate percentage of African American applicants.

If they only gave like 1 scholarship out to a white male in the last two years I don't think its worth the time of all the white males who might be taking all the time and effort to apply honestly.

Wish I had access to this data so I could determine if I/ they am/ are wasting my time or not.

@Bobby: If you don't mind me asking, where exactly on their website do they speak about a disproportionate amount of African American applicants receiving the scholarship? Can you provide that link please? I can't seem to find any information like this at all. Thanks again!

"NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE CORPS...

...In FY 2012, African American physicians represent 17 percent of the Corps physicians which exceeds their 6.3 percent representation within the national physician workforce. And, Hispanic physicians represent 16 percent of the Corps physicians, exceeding their 5.5 percent representation in the national physician workforce.

According to self-reports more than half of by the nearly 1,000 Corps scholars in the pipeline are minorities – 26 percent are Hispanic, 19 percent are African American, 12 percent are Asian or Pacific Islander, and 2 percent are American Indian or Alaska Native."

Must be a product of all that 'white privilege' thats all the rage in feminist/ anti-anglo saxon white occupied academia these days. Good thing there are movies in popular culture like Django Unchained to set the record straight. 🙄

And, yeah, by the way an objective analysis of global population statistics specific to race: whites ARE THE MINORITY these days (between 8-10% and due to birthrates below replacement for several decades, i.e. below 2.1%, shrinking exponentially). But, the younger generation is being subjected to the effects of the well intentioned but erroneous/ misguided paradigms of the boomers et al. The baby boomers, who control social policy in N. America at this point, are braindead stuck in the mindset of the 60s when their age group was (and still is) 90% of the population in N. America and one of the three dominant racial groups globally.

In fact, just within the United States, white children under the age of 5 have been less than 50% of that age group and younger...for like, at least 5 years now! (meaning just in N. America alone whites ~10 and younger already are the minority and have been going on at least an entire decade.😎).

But yeah, doesn't affect the boomers because all they see is their present day job and future nursing home filled with their contemporaries who are 90% white boomers just like them. So, its easy to expect them to keep accommodating/ condoning the discrimination against younger whites in government and business under the false flag of 'diversity': they don't pay the price and will shortly be leaving this hypocritical mess for others to sort out.

Out of the five scholars currently attending my school (that I know of), none are minorities or from a disadvantadged background.

are they from the rural areas?

2 of us are from Los Angeles, and another two grew up in SF. No idea where the last is from. So nah. Anyhoo, it's anecdotal, but the point is that you shouldn't let preconceptions prevent you from applying. The worst that can happen is that you'll have wasted a couple of hours (which you have plenty of, while waiting for matriculation), if you feel that you'd be a good fit.

I'm sure being a minority or from a disadvantaged background can't hurt?

Inngu, when did you find out if you were selected for the program? Were you accepted for all four years?

How many of you guys ended up applying to the NHSC scholarship program? I am putting the finishing touches on my resume now and planning to submit just barely before the deadline haha.

Regardless, best of luck to all of you who applied!

I applied! I hope to at least become a "finalist"

I wonder what the likelihood is of getting the scholarship if you become a finalist? From what was written in previous entries, finalists are asked for their bank information... So, I am assuming a finalist position is pretty much a "as long as your credit doesn't screw it up for you, you're in" kind of thing.

🙁 three months of awkward waiting.... it is like waiting to hear back from dental school, all over again.

I found out at the end of first quarter of D-school (returned all loans taken out, without fees), and received the scholarship for all 3 years (UoP). It made for a pretty good post-finals celebration.

Yeah, as far as I can tell, the "finalist" stage just gives you an opportunity to back out of the program if you get cold feet. I don't know of any that were turned down after making it there.

I bet that was a definite cause for celebration, congrats!

What month did you guys find out you were a finalist?

WOOO! Application status changed to "Under review"... As i'm sure it has for everyone... HAHA! I wish it was September already.

Mine too. A part of me can't believe that I am willingly subjecting myself to another application process--but I am excited nonetheless! Best of luck.

Where can you check the status of your application? The login link is gone now that the 2013 cycle is closed.

EDIT: nvm found it!

So, I finally found a PDF with the exact numbers from 2012... (for those of you that care about your chances like I do).

Last year, 275 of the 1,400+ that submitted completed applications for the NHSC scholarship marked that their future career goal was dentistry. 56 of those applicants received a scholarship. 20.3% likelihood of receiving the scholarship for dentists!

However, since they already said that they plan on reducing the number of total scholarships to 190, 22 less than last year, it will most likely change the odd for us this year.

I digress.

Nod. Seems like the number of applications vary by quite a bit from year to year, too. 1400 in 2012, 3200 the year before (for 250 total scholarships), 1400 again the year before that. Anyhoo, good luck!

Thanks for finding those stats! At least with those statistics it doesn't seem impossible haha

Both members who talked to us about this at the ASDA conference were white males haha. I think anyone can join, but be ready to work at any number of federally qualified health centers. Might not be near civilization haha

I already posted this in another forum, but does anyone know how many people applied this year for the scholarship?

One of my LOR writers got a prompt to write another LOR? He forwarded the email to me and it looked like... it was simply a re-email of the original prompt he got. My application says it was properly submitted and so I called to make sure everything was OK.

At the end of the phone call the person (after telling me that the email prompt must have been in error) made this statement: "You will hear anytime between now and.... September. People have already started receiving notifications."

😱

WHAAAAAAA? Already? Were they rejection notifications? You would think there would be SOME sign on SDN (dental or medical side) that people have been receiving offers.

😱

This is so nerve wracking! I haven't heard anything either way. Several people from my program applied this cycle and they haven't heard anything either as far as I know.

What is your program?

Good luck! After looking back at past years... It looks like they have always notified the first week of august. Here's to a little bit more waiting! 😀

Students I know who applied didn't hear back until early August, either, Jaws. Be patient! =D

HAHA, yeah... Dental school and NHSC apps have been a lesson in patience :boom:

I was just wondering if anyone has heard back from the NHSC yet? I was wondering when people are normally invited to interview?

Thanks!!

There are no interviews for the NHSC scholarship anymore. According to last year, most people that are offered the scholarship will hear in early August.

One more month! :scared:

Wow, good to know. I have been sitting hear freaking out about not hearing anything. Does everyone just hear a yes or no in August?
Thanks for the help!

Not sure but I heard they aren't too good with telling people they didn't get it. From what I read on Previous threads people heard a yes in the beginning of August but didn't hear a no for a long time, maybe because they have to wait to see who accepts so they can offer to backups in necessary?

If you do get accepted into this, does anyone know what the base salary is during these years ?

The website just says that the salary will be "competitive" and will be paid by the site.

👍

This is from the DO forum....

So I was looking at the Customer Service Portal this morning (where we can view our submitted applications) and I noticed that one of my documents that I uploaded had a different name than what I originally labelled it as. More specifically, when I scanned/uploaded my Transcripts, it was saved simply as 'Transcripts' and this morning I looked at it and it was 'Last name, Middle name, Transcripts'. I opened it up and it was my Transcript, but a SCREEN SHOT of the first and third page of it. On the third page some person wrote "capture screenshots with submitted transcripts. Page 1 & 3 recovered. Page 2 embedded. Applicant eligible for future review" then an initial and a date. Also my final cumulative GPA was circled.

I would really love to know people's thoughts on this, my heart skipped a beat when I opened up the document and found a screen shot of my transcripts. Am I allowed to even talk about this? I didn't give away any identifying information...

I don't have anything like that... AND I am not speculating that "if you don't have this it means that you didn't get the scholarship." I just think it is interesting and finally a sign of life. HAHA!

Anybody else find this?

I checked my application, I did not see any of these changes. Can anyone else confirm this happened with their application?

Thanks!

Mine didn't have this change either. Can you link to the post so we can see if any of the DO's had this happen to theirs?

Thanks! I was looking at the different sites but they do not give a specific salary number. I hope by "competitive salary" they don't mean 30 grand a year with a free cup of coffee every morning:laugh:

I searched through all of the currently open positions eligible for the scholarship. Only one in Missouri had the salary listed. It was 130,000-155,000 plus benefits depending on experience. Hopefully most are over 100,000. All of the others said competitive salary plus benefits and some had bonuses and moving allowance.

That sounds great!! Thank you jmh018!! 🙂

Yeah, I couldn't imagine it being too far below what others are making in the area... Although it will probably be less than we would make if we were to join a thriving private practice, it is pretty much all money in our pockets... Because we won't have any loans to pay off!!! :biglove:

Minus my undergrad loans... ): haha!

Here's to one more month! :luck:

That salary is in...Missouri. From the few posts I've seen from folks on here, the salary was actually more around 80-100 +/-10. What makes the positions competitive in benefits is the obvious lack of debt, as well as things like paid vacation/holidays, retirement matching, CE credit, etc.
