njms 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i remember reading somewhere that we needed a pda for school. i meant to ask this during the luncheon, but forgot. any input?

If you want to stay at the dorms, 180 W. Market, then I suggest that you apply ASAP if you want a studio/one bedroom. Vist their website: http://www.umdnj.edu/home2web/housing/faq.htm

The application says we need a student ID number. But we haven't been assigned IDs yet. 🙁

Oh, and I heard from my tour guide that the student housing building is connected to the medical school. I can't find anywhere on the housing web page about it being connected. It seems like that would be an important thing to mention. Is this true, or was I just hearing things?

You weren't hearing things, I've heard it mentioned a couple times. I haven't actually seen the connecting structure myself yet though.

My tour guides at the accepted students luncheon showed us the apartments. They're connected to the medical school through a parking garage. So you technically don't have to go outside to get between the two buildings.

I called the housing department, and they said that if you're an incoming student, you don't need to write down the student id number (b/c you aren't issued one yet).

Don't even bother about getting a PDA...there is no need for it at all in first year. Wait until second year.
Also, look at the NJMS 2011 forum on SDN, it has similar concerns that were addressed.

sorry to all the ppl who wanted to exchange names for the luncheon, i wasn't near my computer for the past week lol...we'll meet at orientation i guess

anyhow, i plan to commute...live around 20-25 min. away although several people have told me that at least for first semester i should be dorming. what do you guys think?

and forget about med school, how bout those giants!

hell yah, theres a new sheriff in town baby 😉

I live about 30 mins (20 miles) away, but I plan on living on campus for atleast the first year. Maybe more.

Newark is a pain in the arse in terms of traffic during rush hour. Since classes are from 9-5, you'll be stuck in rush hour traffic, so a 30 min trip turns into 1 hour. And then there's parking. Ugh.

Plus, if you like studying in groups (which, I'v heard is pretty much a necessity in med school), commuting will make it difficult.

I don't know. After commuting to Newark for the last four years, I'm kinda looking forward to living on-campus.

Although the convenience of living on campus is nearly unbeatable, I just don't know if I want to pay that type of money to live in Newark...haha. I'm still going back and forth between living on/living off campus. Did anyone run into a fellow SDNer at the luncheon? I didn't :-( but I still met some pretty funny and cool people in my tour group.

yeah actually I found pleasebelieveit and descentfan at my table. small world 😀

I plan on commuting as well but I live only 15-20 min or so from the campus. From my personal experience there is usually a ton of parking in the students deck did everyone check in there? I'm in the grad school now and I have never had trouble finding a parking spot. I think there was just allot of confusion the day of the luncheon.

Traffic is what you make of it. I learned at least 4 different routes for getting into and around Newark so if you just check the traffic each morning you'll never be stuck in an hour commute.

Just my two cents. Friendly banter always welcome 🙂

Let me guess, you probably live east of Newark. Thats the only way you'd have 4 different routes. Unfortunately, I have to commute to Newark from the West. The only way into Newark for me is through 280. Yuck. 🙁

Nah I come from up north and usually take the parkway to Newark. 280 can be hell but your right thats primarily what I avoid.

I am an eagles fan but McNabb has been doing nothing but pissing my friends and I off so we're starting to cheat on the eagles with the giants..

I really want to go into the clinic as well. I'll definitely be doing that as much as I am able once school starts. Gonna have to balance it with research though, maybe..

And I'm being really horribly lazy about the housing contract, which is really bad lol.. I need to just fill that sucker out and send it in.

You can't cheat on the Eagles with one of their divisional rivals. I just spent 15 minutes thinking of a relevant example to no avail. Nonetheless, this is heretical. Sports bigamy at its worse.

lol..no way...I bleed green!!!...haha...the games should be exciting this wkend....Both championship games are going to be crazzzzzy!!

Ok...I'm sure ppl are going to wonder why I am posting this, but I will do it anyway...Does anyone know if the dorms get HDTV or not..lol....I'm guessing we have access to cable and we could prob get it, but I'm not sure..I am about to buy a niiiiice TV and hoping that I will be able to get at least some pleasure from HD..Plus, when the Eagles start winning again next year I want to see it in High Def..BTW...anyone excited for Lost season 4 on Jan 31????

Eagles Giants cowboys blah blah blah my Pats are going to take it all anyway :meanie:

OH NO YOU DIDN'T all up on this board right here!!! No one likes people who leave their women when they are pregnant. I hope your boy BRADY gets pummeled on Sunday. :meanie:

LOL

Hey all, got the call tonight and am glad to be joining you guys!

And Tynes totally redeemed himself with that last kick.

Congrats buddy! Probably a similar feeling to what Tynes felt

tynes was on the verge of becoming the most wanted man in ny/nj state history...thank God he made it

o and congrants dude

Gotta give the G-men credit but lets face it their cinderella run is over. No way they can stop Brady in the warm Arizona air.

do the patriots have an orthopaedist?

Anyone here interested in neurosurgery?
Anyone here into Hi-fi audio (audiophile)?

I'm keeping an open mind but I'm sure that I want some type of surgery.

At the moment I'm leaning toward plastics though. I don't need much, in the lifestyle department, but I would like to get good sleep most nights and have enough time to exercise comfortably most days (maybe not in residency but definitely in practice), so I'm leary of neurosurgery simply because the lifestyle appears to be the worst of them all.

You'll get calls in the middle of the night and the basic message will be "it's time for brain surgery." That takes a special kind of person.

Edit: Not trying to discourage you at all, just explaining why I, personally, think it might not be for me. The procedures are definitely cool I'm just not sure I want the lifestyle associated with operating on traumatic brain injuries.

I'm in!!! I got the call two weeks ago, but I haven't been on SDN that much. It's my first acceptance, so it took so much pressure off of me. Congrats to everyone else! 😀

Congrats! The first acceptance feels so good.

anyone get paperwork for financial aid ? aren't we supposed to have gotten in by now? also, should we be filling out fafsa now?

Yes, start filling out FAFSA go to the student financial aid site for UMDNJ for further instructions (google it).
Also, regarding the neurosurgery matches. One of the people who matched was the School President, Mike Ivan -- he's going to USCF, which is one of the best programs in the country. Another matchee, Vishad Sukul, is part of the BA/MD program -- he finished his undergrad in 2 years! Sick...

Hey all, congratulations on your acceptance. You're coming to a great school. I'm a first year, and just wanted to add a little bit of guidance on housing. I STRONGLY advise against the apartments on campus. The price is ridiculously high for the area, and the local complexes of university centre and society hill are both better accomodations at lower costs. Additionally, in areas just surrounding Newark such as West Orange and Bloomfield, you can find nicer apartments for even lower costs than living in Newark.

On your meet and greet sessions in the next few months, both the individuals who run 180 west market and the administration of UMDNJ are going to push the angle of "Oooh Newark, big scary place...best to be close to home!" As tempting as this may sound, the benefits do not outweigh the costs. The private organization that runs the on-campus housing has been gouging UMDNJ students since it was created, and it won't be until people make a stand and send a message that it is not acceptable to take advantage of students, and find another residence.

I've had a lot of other issues that are specific to my apartment location at 180 West Market, and I can respond to PMs if you have any further questions. I just urge you not to make the same mistake I did.

Good Luck! Looking forward to meeting everyone in the fall.

I plan on commuting from Jersey City by the path or light rail. Why worry about parking or traffic? Public transport to Newark is fine- you can get there by light rail from Belleville and JC or by bus from West Orange or Montclair.

Rents are going down, you can find a lot of nice places right now. I'm living 2 blocks from a path station in a penthouse. And it's much cheaper than student housing would be.

If you've been commuting to Newark already, then why worry about the timing for first year classes? You've already dealt with it.

Good advice.

the traffic thing is really overrated to begin with. This past semester I took the MGM class and I was late to class maybe 2 times. I come from up north and have about a 20 minute commute. For those days you may run a few minutes late the lectures are all recorded and put online. If that's not enough there are the scribe notes. With those two alone your pretty much covered with the material from class.

you guys have given me something to think about, thanks for bringing it up. I was planning on just eating the extra cost and living in the student housing for convenience, but if I can find a place closeby and still use public transportation or otherwise walk, thats something to think about.

im a fourth year, so ill give you my 2 cents

1- first two years from 45 minutes away: HATED IT. Sitting on the GSP bumper to bumper to make it to 8-9am class is literally mentally abusive. Would not recommend.
2- Living in the on campus dorms- Was expensive, but didn't have a single problem the entire year, nothing to complain about. And it was nice to have parking right under the apartments. Was also nice to wake up at 6:50 in the morning when i had to be on the floor at 7.
3- Living in nyc- Pros outweigh the cons, although the cons are the same as 1.

This is the most important piece of advice: There is enough stress from school itself, don't underestimate the cumulative effect a ****ty daily commute will have on you. I stopped going to mandatory classes after the first semester partially because of this (although you will learn that going to class, with the exception of anatomy, is useless because scribe notes are so good)

also, an unrelated piece of advice....Make every effort to go to student family health clinic. I felt like i learned more here in the first two years than in actual classes. Some sessions may stink if you get crapola students teaching you, but a lot of us are good.

That's a good point, but I don't stress as much if I'm riding the train. But I will take the advice of my seniors to heart, and I don't plan on living more than 20 min away.

Yeah, I anticipate using scribe notes whenever I can. I'm more focused and productive in the morning and that is when I plan on doing the majority of my work/memorization. I don't really retain things I learn in class. Class time is really just a chance for me to contact the prof or other classmates if I need to.
