njms 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Estxx57, you said you saw the 3-bedrooms suits at 180 right? What did you think? If it's a case of sharing a bathroom at the savings of $1400-1700 a year, I don't think I'd mind that.

I was actually pretty impressed with the place -- so I was surprised/disappointed when I started reading all the criticism about the dorm. The furniture was really nice, brand new. The kitchen was also pretty sweet, not too small, and there's a small dining area behind it. Nice countertops and fridge and microwave included.

The bedrooms aren't impressively big or anything. I think that if you share with less people the bedrooms increase in size. But my impression is probably also a result of the beds all being Full sized which I'm not used to seeing but was glad to see.

The bathroom looked nice, too. And they have a second sink outside the bathroom which is probably convenient when you live with two other people. Overall, as a college student, I would have loved to live in a place like that, even having to share the place with two people. It was much better/newer looking than any dorm I've personally seen, and decently spacious for a city apartment.

NICE I love Full beds. I thought the floor plan looked good too, don't expect or need the individual rooms to be very big. It's pretty neat to have a small "living room" with a sofa.

University Centre is spamming me with mail lately.. this is going to be a tough decision.

I agree... it is a tough decision. But the reason why i'm 99% sure on living at 180 west market is because I called university centre and asked them if I could definitely be places with other medical students... and they said they cant guarantee me that... I would much rather share an apartment with another medical student rather than a student from all the other schools university centre serves... and i really wouldnt want to live with an undergrad student either.. So i dont think i will be living in university centre till my 2nd year when i have friends (hopefully haha) that can share an apartment with me...

university centre looks so nice though and i love the fact that they have a gym...

Can 180 guarantee you an apartment with another med student?

I remember the tour guide saying NJMS has a gym for faculty and students in one of the buildings, though it was pretty small. If it's got a treadmill, a bike, and a bench, that's good enough for a cardio workout. For non-cardio stuff I'll probably be joining the Rutgers gym for $154 per year (pretty cheap compared to NYSC, on par with Planet Fitness).

nope, but at least you can definitely be with another medical student... and all of the current first years i have met all lived with other medical students and didnt know anyone coming into njms... i dont know if it was a coincidence that every med student i met lived with other med students or is 180 west market really tried to keep all the med students together...

oh, ive never heard that!!! thanks for the info! and wow that is a great price for a year!

Wow, this thread is really moving lately..That's what I like to see class of 2012!! lol...A while back I posted that I might consider a friend's apartment and that I was waiting to hear back...Well, I found out that her apt is in east orange..apparently this is the safe part of newark and that the neighborhood is really "happening." So if anyone is considering not living in the dorms or university centre east orange might also be worth considering...

...so does anyone know how far the rutgers, planet fitness, or nysc gyms are from campus..there is no way I am letting myself get out of shape when school starts...I think I will just pick the one that is closest or easiest to get to from campus..

Hey guys,

Keep up the good job with the posts. A lot of good information is being provided that I think many of incoming NJMS students will value (I know I do). I have also been toiling with making a decision as to where to live. Like many of you, I think I'm going to have to stick it out at 180 at least for the first year and just stomach a lot of the cons that I know I will have to face. However, I am still very excited to start med school this August and look forward to meeting all of you, my future classmates. 🙂 And by the way, make sure you guys get a jump on the immunization forms. The people from the health office were pretty serious about the time line (hep b takes approx 6 months for the 3 vaccinations).

the rutgers gym is around 3-4 blocks down...you can use the chen shuttle service they have to get there. and for the price and distance their gym is probably your best bet

I already have a Rutgers ID but I am interested in joining a gym outside of Newark. Does anyone know of any in a nicer area? Especially if there is a 24 hour gym somewhere I like to go at weird times.

Hey everybody!!!

So....my first time here! I am so psyched about NJMS! I can no longer contain my excitement. Seriously I was so thrilled when I saw plsbeleiveit(sic) private message with the link to this thread (thanks a bunch sweetie). Anyhow...so...I didnt go to the stupid luncheon in dec. because I never received an invite🙁. I just finished my financial aid apps and requested a whopping 65K on the last part of the NJMS FinAID app portion. I cant believe they even gave us that option...so You all know I had to go big!!...lmao😀

Anyhow....so heres a quick bit abou me. I am currently a RU-N student (I no longer claim it tho...SO SICK OF THAT PLACE), and I am tall. Oh...I am female also (guess thats important). I really really want to get to know people BEFORE classes begin in the fall so plz feel free to bombard my pm box. For those who live in the NJ/NYC area, perhaps we could all get together sometime in May (after we all graduate) and have sort of like an informal get together...that would be cool.

Well...I have said waaaay too much and I am going to bed. Its 5am by the way. I figured I'd start practicing pulling all nighters now...😛

....jusssst kidding!

Wow, you are getting me excited just reading your post...lol...That's too bad you missed the first luncheon...I'm wondering if they will have another one for the rest of the students...Does anyone know?...I know they have the cruise (well at least they used to) right before classes start...

according to my friends who are at NJMS now, there is another luncheon! I was at the last one and I met a bunch of nice people, but my friend said this second one is better because its just the people who have decided to go to njms (since its all the way in june I believe). So i cant wait to see you all there 🙂

I belong to Powerhouse Gym in Bloomfield. It's about a 10 min non-rush hour drive from campus. It is big, usually not crowded, and open 24 hours. If you pay in advance it's pretty cheap too (425ish for 13 months). As long as you don't get intimidated by a lot of swollen meatheads, it's a great place to work out.

Hey Hottice! Welcome to the board and I look forward to meeting you (and everyone else).

Who's down for meeting up in the summer to hang out? Maybe we can do a group baseball game at Yankee Stadium (ok ok we can go see the Mets if we have to), shake our booties at the club, or maybe bar hop in Hoboken?

Thanks! Do they have a pool there?

As an out of stater I vote for before summer

I'm down to meet up with everyone..we will have to organize something..going out is prob the best idea since we will be limited in our fun through med school....lol

underpressure- i'm an out of stater too! sorta... i go to undergrad in jersey, so i feel like a NJ resident haha. I vote for summer too... I think its great that we will all get some fun in before all the sleepless nights ahead...

If it's baseball I vote Mets 😀

I'm down for meeting up as well. Would be nice to go into med school with a few friends. Hope we can work something out for the summer.

Me too I go to Rutgers in New Brunswick but don't live here and I meant before summer because I will probably be home most of the time. Anyone interested in getting together before finals?

before finals works for me.. during the summer works for me... basically anytime before school starts works haha

yeah anytime before classes start work for me too..lol..how about we plan it for after the next luncheon..that way we can try and spread the word and see if anyone else wants to attend...

Wow, I see a lot of new people have been accepted, so congrats to all of you!

I just finished filling out the FAFSA and the online aid thing, and I requested $50,000. If the actual cost is a bit over that, I can always borrow a few thousand from my parents. Besides, having a $200,000 debt at a state school doesn't really make sense to me. I'm going to try to limit myself to about $40k/yr.

For those of you interested in the Golden Dome (Rutgers-Newark Gym), check this article out: http://www.rutgersnewarkathletics.com/Sports/gen/2007/facilities.asp

If you haven't explored the area around the school yet, you can always use Google Earth to look around.

Thanks for the gym info MundaneMD...Yeah, I took out 52,000....I really hope that I don't use it all..For some reason, I was thinking it would be a little less than that..I'm hoping that as the years go on I won't be spending so much on housing and that I won't need as much..

is anyone here doing the MD/MPH program???

yea I agree and am definitely down for some sort of gathering whether it be in north jersey or NyC etc. I'm down in south jersey/philly area but I make frequent trips to NyC since i did my undergrad there. For all of you guys who are settling for 180 West Market and realize singles/studios aren't gonna happen... generally does everyone just wait till that housing day in June or something to figure out who to live with?? how do most ppl living in doubles or triples pick out their roomies if not by that sketchy roommate match form haha.

They said even if one opens up mid-semester, if you are on the waitinglist they will offer it to you. If what you say is true and studios/1-bedrooms don't open up, might as well go to University Centre, right?

University Centre is sold out of studios/singles according to their front desk. They do have 2 bedrooms and 3 bedrooms available.

I totally agree that roommate form is sketchy.

Where are people getting the impression that 180 is not going to have any available 1brs/studios? 😕

I'm hoping for a 1br/studio myself, and sent my application back in February. I kind of figured that based on the negative opinions that current students are voicing about it that these kinds of apartments would be emptying up pretty readily. Am I wrong?

Here is what's bugging me:

I've heard over and over that first year students get first pick.
I've also heard that it's hard to get a single/studio because the students don't move out.

So does that mean that incoming students get first pick of the rooms that are not occupied? That's strange, because I remember the contracts being either 6- or 12-month contracts. So once the 12 months are up, aren't those rooms technically available?

I had e-mailed the housing people and they told me that if I wanted a single, I should mail in the stuff ASAP (early Feb). I did exactly what they said. They didn't tell me at the time that the rooms were full or anything.

if you have a single, you are allowed to renew it for the next academic year...thats why ppl who have them now are not giving them up, thus making it harder to get. However, MANY first years right now live in singles, so it is possible for you to get one if you send in your stuff early.

Yeah, I called the housing office after I got the e-mail from Dr. Heinrich that 1st years get priority and they said that was not the case. I hope they are wrong but she was pretty insistent that I was the one who was mistaken.

aww hi guys, i havent been on in awhile, just got back from spring break =) im soo down to chill before classes start, i cant wait to actually get to know all you guys...the luncheon in december was nice but so many ppl werent sure if they were definitely going to njms so it'll be nice to make friends with ppl i'll see again 😛

Since people seem interested in meeting maybe we can pick a day and do something. I'm still in school so maybe before finals like second or third week in April? Let me know what you guys think.

Have I mentioned that I hate that title?

Are there any non-trad out of state students planning on attending NJMS in the fall?

hey people. congrats on getting in....

so im going into fourth year, and im looking to sell off ALL of my books, except my anatomy book (the name escapes me at the moment, but its not snells). Im not looking to make a huge profit...por ejemple...the board review series books sell at the umdnj bookstore for ~35...ill sell them for 15. there is no writing in them. I have a bunch of the textbooks (probably used each of them less than 3 times). Im not a go to class/textbook kind of guy....scribe notes were my staple. let me know if you are interested. And BIG piece of advice....go to student family health clinic...FROM THE BEGINNING...you will learn more here than you will in the classroom...and even if you get a crappy session the first time you go, you will ultimately see what i mean.

Umm we should all meet up at the Jersey shore once it gets warm!

Jersey shore sounds great to me...we could always do a night down AC too..

Hey, I'm flexible time-wise (before finals, after finals, summertime, etc), and I am down for whatever. I probably won't be going to the second student luncheon though because I live really far from the school. So, if you guys conjure up something there, just let us know on the boards or PM people 🙂

has anyone been having trouble mailing stuff to njms? one of my schools sent in my transcripts on the 11th of March and they hadn't received them as of two days ago. is this normal?

also, as a checklist for things that have to be in:
1. transcripts
2. medical forms
3. financial aid
4. housing

Is there anything that I'm missing?

So far, that is all I have done. I called and asked if we needed anything else in and the admissions office pretty much just said that as long as we have the transcripts, financial aid, and medical forms in then we "should be ok." ...lol..I kind of wish she wouldn't have used the word should but she did..

for those of you living at 180 west market street....did you put down 12 month housing or for the academic year? do you know if this can be changed later? OH AND when do we have to send in transcripts by? i thought we had to do it after we graduated?

sorry I should have clarified....you can send in your transcripts as soon as you graduate..and for the housing..I just put down for the academic year..I had slight trepidation about signing something for when I am not in class..I figure that I can always change my mind and if I have to find somewhere to live for a few months then I can figure it out then..Do people usually stay up there for the summer (does anyone know)?

Hey everyone! I'm new to these forums but I can't wait to start at NJMS next fall!!! It was my first choice and I'm so excited! 🙂
