For those that have taken the DAT:

For NMR and IR (mass spectro too, I guess) do they give you a table with the chemical shifts/peaks or should they be memorized?

Like, would they give you a spectrum without the table and ask you for the possible structure?

Thanks.

They will not give you a table. These are the main things you should know for each spectra type:

IR:
-OH, Amines, Carbonyl's, Terminal Alkynes
Mass Spec:
-be able to recognize Br, Cl, and I
NMR:
-Know aromatics will be in the 7-8 ppm range, aldehydes and carboxylic acids are way downfield in the +10 ppm range, etc.

The spectra questions on the DAT are very simple. There will be some defining functionality on a molecule that will make it easy to pick the correct spectra, etc. For example they might give an IR with a broad peak around 3300cm-1 and then ask which of these molecules match the IR.
There is not need to memorize any other shifts except the major functional groups.

funny, I didn't have any NMR and IR in my last DAT! but in my old one I had at least three !

Yeah I didn't study for them for my first one because I didn't think it was important... luckily I didn't get any either. Not liking my luck for the next one though...
