When exactly does a Benzene split? I feel so ignorant, I did really well in class and all of a sudden NMR has me confused.

Some of the questions in the Barron's book just don't seem right to me, any help?

Does a benzene always have a singlet b/c you don't count the neighboring identical hydrogens or what? :(

Magnetically equivalent Hydrogens do not split each other.

Substituents may alter magnetic equivalence and allow splitting to occur.
