Not planning on scrambling, but I've been searching for awhile and there is no clear source to what I've been reading

"if you register with NMS and don't submit a ROL AND don't match in the NRMP match, you're eligible to scramble in the osteopathic scramble"

First, I don't know if this is just a rumor because I cannot find any confirming statements on NMS or from the AOA.

I don't know until I start rotating through some of these programs if I want to do an AOA program, and so do I register for the NMS match or wait, after all its 60 bucks? If I don't, then I won't have an NMS number on my ERAS and so it might be pointless to even apply to these AOA programs becuase they will wonder why I haven't registered with their match and will probably assume you're holding out for the NRMP match.

Any thoughts? 😎

Although not recommended you don't have to enter either Match and you are still eligible to scramble. Many Osteopahtic students don't enter the Osteopathic match and end up not matching into the Allopahthic programs and end up scrambling into Osteopathic Programs.

The absolute best advice is to research programs and enter both matches. Understand that if you match into an Osteopahtic program you are automatically kicked out of the Allopathic Match. But you avoid the stress of potentially not matching Allopathic and trying to scramble into one of the limited number of positions still available.

If you look at the statistics over 1900 Osteoapthic students went into the 2010 allopathic match and over 600 did not match into programs. They all scrambled into both Osteopathic and Allopathic programs. I am sure it was very stressful.

MD's don't have the opportunity to match into DO programs so as a DO you have the advantage of finding a position, you should take advantage of it while it is still available.....after the matches you will be competing with MD's and foriegn medical grads for unfilled MD spots and most of the DO spots will be taken during their scamble period which wil be occurring while you wait for the MD Match results to come out.

Here's something to keep in mind if you have to scramble for AOA spots. While there were a lot of unfilled spots in the AOA match, most of them were in traditional internships, family med, and internal med. Of the 970 unfilled spots, only 78 were not in one of these three specialties for 2010.
