OK....I had taxed my brain abt working and non working side when I was cramming for part 1.This is how I ultimately figured it out..and it's stuck with me forever now.....

First clue would be to see the direction of the arrow given
A straight arrow=working side
a slant in the arrow=non working side.

My way of doin it was:

first identify the quadrant indicated by the diagram given. Then imagine this in your mouth.ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THE ARROW INDICATES MOVT OF THE MANDIBLE.now move your mandible in the direction given by the arrow over the maxillary cusps shown.....you'll figure out which is working and non working side depending on MANDIBULAR MOVT!!

I hope you've understood.Somehow it's clear in my head  Practice a few times....you'll know it in your sleep.good luck!! 👍

If I understood the question correctly you want to know the tooth numbering system in universal?

Wee Right maxillary third molar is #1(thats how its written),coming upto right maillary central incisor is #8 and left maxillary CI is# 9 going through to left maxillary third molar is #16....
coming down..Left mandibular tjird molar is #17 and going through to the right mand third molar is #32...

Similarly for the deciduous dentition

Right A B C D E F G H I J Left.............maXillary

Right T S R Q P O N M L K ........ mandibular

hi !
i m refering notes which r posted on sdn in the following thread
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=112382
i m very poor in working non working sides
i have a doubt here in the same notes posted by gpg,

if u have the occlusal surfaces of the lower right posteriors with the arrow pointing distofacially its a non-working side movement to the right(see 1 above)

and similarly if you have the occlusal surfaces of the upper right posteriors with the arrow pointing to the mesiolingually its the non-working side movement to the left....see 2 above!

these r some points from the post,
i m a littil bit confused here
lower right posteriors =non-working side movement to the right
upper right posteriors =non-working side movement to the left?

thanks in advance

Because the arrows show the direction of movt.mandible and not maxilla

thanks! 🙂
but i think i need to practice solving these kind of ques,
i get confused during solving them!

Well, the arrows show the movement of the OPPOSITE arch on the arch that is drawn in the picture.

So if the picture shows the mandible, then the arrows are showing the direction the maxilla moves. If the picture shows the maxilla, then the arrows are the direction that the mandible moves against the maxilla.

also remember that the maxilla does not actually "move". it is the mandible that does the actual moving since it is mobile and the maxilla is stationary. the arrows indicate the "relative" direction of movement of the opposing arch.

in other words, if the picture shows a forward facing arrow on the mandible, it means the maxilla is moving forward "relative" to the mandible, and what it actually means is that the mandible is moving backwards or a retrusive movement of the mandible.

(dent_ist, have we confused u some more?? :meanie: )
