Hi everyone. As you can probably tell from my username, I am from Maine. I am a college student who wants to go on to an allopathic medical school. Maine does not have an allopathic medical school. Am I at a significant disadvantage because there is no state school for me to go to? Would I get special consideration at any schools?

Any response would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know much about the northeast, but students from states without a medical school are usually given preference by one of the state schools in the region (such as Idaho and U of Washington). Your pre-med advisor might know some of these arrangements (if you're in ME for college).

Significant disadvantage? Yes, but there are OOS friendly schools. If by special consideration you mean harder to get in (due to OOS status), then yes, you will get special consideration.

Don't overlook UNECOM just because its an osteopathic school.

I go to school in MA

My cousin in-law was from ME, she went to BC in MA, lived in MA for 7 years (4 years for bachelor's and extra 3 years after graduation ) to develop residency status and she got accepted to UMASS Med MD program. I know OOS can apply there for MD/PhD.

I think Tufts has a special Maine track with preferential admissions. Tuition there is 2-3x what a state school would probably charge you, but hey, it's an option.

Yeah, right now the only linkage program for ME residents is the Tufts Maine Track, and actually, tuition is subsidized for almost all the Maine Track students so that tuition is *comparable* to what you might expect for in state tuition. We mainers used to have linkages with Dartmouth and UVM, but when the Tufts program came along, those linkage programs were lost unfortunately. So yeah, as of today, Tufts is the only place that gives Mainers a break.
