No interviews yet....anyone in the same boat?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Seems so strange that many, many people with above average statistics seem to be getting very little love this cycle.

not necessarily disagreeing with you but I just wanted to point out that the thread is called no interviews yet which is probably why people with no interviews are posting in it, whereas those that have been getting interviews (average and above average statistics) are posting in other threads or not at all.

The first year I applied to 18 schools, I was offered interviews at 2 schools (UVM and Kentucky). Both of them were an impossiblity for that year (UVM fills up fast with instate students, Kentucky fills up fast with instate/out of state). However, it did give them a chance to meet me for if I was going to reapply for the next cycle (I directly stated that if I was unsuccessful I would reapply). So this year I reapplied (this time 26 schools), and I was immediately offered an interview at both schools, and I'm on "hold" at more schools. I have already been accepted to UVM, and Kentucky looks like I stand a great chance too.

TLDR: By now, if you have an interview spot you stand a really good chance to get in. If you get one later in the cycle (Feb-April) look at it as a slim chance to get in, but really good for if you reapply. Don't give up.

😕

Which schools did you get II from? Where are you from?

I went to undergrad (and was a resident before that) in VA. Currently living in MA (and a MA resident). But I get no in-state privileges at UMass (their state residency is way too stringent)...

I got II's from Tufts, Feinberg, and Temple.

It's strange (or maybe not?) because I applied 3 years ago while I was still in college. Same GPA (~3.8) but lower MCAT 31 (with a 9 in PS). I got 7 interviews that year. (unfortunately, 5 Waitlists + 2 Rejection).

This time around (second time applying), I have a higher MCAT 35, same high-ish GPA, 2 years of full-time research exp at Harvard med, better letters and essays, less naivety/immaturity... 3 interviews so far. Bah.

Same boat as you with this upstate thing. What's going on with the other suny's. 😡

The only other SUNY I applied to was Downstate since I'm not a NY resident... Let me know if you hear back from either one. Good luck to both of us!

On a brighter note, I did just get an interview invite to NYMC! yayyyy! They are doing a regional Orlando interview... available dates are well into January now.. gee.

been stalking this thread for a bit of hope. 3.9/34 with nothing but rejection after 2 months... i hate this.

Your stats are similar to mine. When were you complete? What kinds of ECs do you have? Did you apply broadly or too top-heavy? It's not just the numbers - there are a lot of other factors that are weighted in the admissions process.

7 interviews, no acceptances, thats terrifying...why you think that happened?

I admit my first 3 interviews were pretty bad... They were the interviews I had in late Sept - late Nov. Rejected from the first 2... WL from the third one.

I really felt that my upcoming interviews were better... ones I had through December, January... and I think I had 2 interviews in early Feb? But all those I got WL at. Perhaps the seats were really filled by that time? (one of them were NYU, which according to SDN looks like they "fill up the seats" by December). I don't think that I was horribly unimpressive, while I may not have been fantastic either. Grr who knows?

No IIs yet, but I'm not expecting any until Nov/Dec since I was complete in late Sept/early Oct. I'm already beefing up my app for next cycle though, just in case.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

If you haven't received any II by now, are your chances to be accepted also lower particularly for rolling schools? Most likely, we have missed the first wave of II (possibly second wave as well) and some seats. Normally, it will take 1-2 months after receiving the II before the interview is actually taking place.

Decent ecs: some shadowing, decent research, not too much community service. I don't think it's something that would rule me out but I don't know.
I finished most of my secondaries in late august/early september and applied kind of top heavy but with a handful of "safer" schools. I figure either one of my rec letter writers secretly hated me or I just can't write secondaries for ****.

3.48, 33Q ended up finishing 26 applications, 7 rejections, 1 hold, 1 interview invite so far. Finished secondaries between late July and late September, might still send in a couple more.

To everyone who is waiting - you put yourself out on the table. Take a deep breath and tell yourself that it is now out of your control. Spend that nervous energy strengthening your app!! Or go fishing, read a book (Moonwalking With Einstein??), go to a Haunted House, go running, volunteer at a soup kitchen.

My best friend: 3.4, 29M, sent in 20 apps. So far ~5 rejections, 0 invites. My boyfriend: 3.3, 32, 25 apps, 3 interviews last year. Was wait listed at 2 of the three.... was set up to go to Georgetown's SMP this year.... but got a call from BOTH schools in June and was accepted off the wait lists. He interviewed in January and February.

Have faith, you're not alone.

i really need to rant but i don't want to start another thread so here goes...

i live 20 mins from ucd, volunteered in the hospital, shadow, and research all at ucd, safe to say, it is my dream school.

so i called them several times to see my status, and today i emailed them to see if i have any chance at secondary app.

they told me to check my app status at their portal, i never recieved any info about the portal in the first place, but went and checked it for the first time,
it has two info, that they recieved my app on july 20 and that they rejected my app on july 20,
wtf... all those times i called and begged them about my app and they could have told me that i was rejected, even an email would have been nice, but no, i could have waited until aug of next year and never find out that it took them 8 hours to reject me.
i feel bad that i actually loved this school, only feel hatred right now.😡

Well - what are you stat? Unless you have 3.7 + 35+, expecting an II to me is unreasonable.

i have 3.2 gpa and 33 mcat, i know interview is unlikely,
but the least thing they could have done was 1. sent me a notification of the update (that i was rejected),
2. every time i called, they could have told me that i was rejected, so don't wait on the sec app,

i mean, i called and waited and hoped to hear any response from the school, but nothing, i would never have found out if i didn't email them today, and automatic prescreening, i have above 30 mcat and above 3.0 gpa for godsake!!, whats their prescreening standard?😡

That is what is so annoying about this process...I would be upset also, they should have told you right away and when you called. Some schools don't seem to be very sensitive about these things, maybe because they get so many applicants. Hope it works out for you at another school🙂

3.2 GPA is below the 10th percentile for ALL california schools. I suggest you go do a SMP and bring that up to a 3.6.

i don't think u understand why i am upset, but thats fine, you understanding my situation is not important to me,

anyways, i just want to forget about it, get drunk, have a good cry and get over it 🙁

my point exactly, it would have been nice if they just told me when i called or notified me, since i had such respect for uc davis, it is even more disappoiniting, and thank you, hope you have a great cycle too.

A close friend of mine got 12 interview invites, several from TOP TIER schools. His stats: 3.7, 29R.

He is also East Asian (ORM), from NorCal. He didn't label himself disadvantaged on AMCAS.

How is this possible?

Well, he's started up his own NGO, has mad clinical experience, and was a student leader at his school. He's also a prolific writer and his personal/secondary apps were tear jerkers. He's also the first in his family to graduate college.

On his spare time, he is a body builder and wrestler, although he doesn't have much time for those anymore...

Hope this gives you guys hope!!! His story is inspiring, and I know all of you guys have the same potential to be amazing physicians. 😡😡😡😡😡

Keep your head up, and fight on!!! RAWR!!!

*Hug*

This process is ruthless man, but don't ever give up. You'll make a great physician. 😎

It seems like there's some sort of a consensus that if you have not
yet received an II from a particular school, then you shouldn't hope on getting one from that school if you applied earlier (June-Aug) in the cycle?

Well, anything's possible, really.

Not true! Always have hope. It's a brutal process, but make sure you do everything in your power to keep the school's interest. How?

Well, write your update letters (if schools accept them), stay on top of your status updates, make sure you write interest letters (if schools accept them), and continue to do important stuff while you wait. The worst thing is to do nothing at all during this waiting period. Volunteer, do research, run a marathon, learn a new skill, start up a company...anything. Schools will ask you what you've been doing since your primary & secondaries. It's important to show you've been doing something, anything. Plus, it's one more thing to add on to your update letters and one more thing that may pull you in the interview/accepted direction.

Then make sure to relax and NOT obsess too much over the process. I know your fingers are hitting the refresh button for both SDN and your email account, but be aware of the fact that people can get interviews as late as March or April and STILL get in. All you need is one!

To be honest, a dean of admission of my state school told us that importance of ECs are exagerrated. Nothing trumps high numbers.

They might be exaggerated but the competition for medical school is getting tougher each year. You gotta do whatever you can to get ahead in the game.

Those were all MD II, 3 from top 10 schools...

I won't lie...I was jelly...

Having a well rounded application is ideal but if it comes down to two applicants with A (excellent academic but so so ECs) or B (excellent ECs but so so academic) then it is obvious A should have the advantage since after all medical school is academically challenging. Even though undergrad grades may not be the perfect indication for performance in medical school, adcom has to make a call and A is just more likely to be chosen.

Nope : ) I saw his AMCAS app. Like I said, we're close friends, and we're hoping to practice medicine together. He's a swell guy, the kind of guy you want a brewsky with.😍

In the end, we can make our little theories about which applicant a medical school wants, but he is already accepted and has the interviews to boot.

I have no reason to lie and haven't done so in the past. I don't care if you believe me or not. The purpose of this post was to give hope to my pre-med friends out there with sub-30 MCAT, because my friend's living proof that it's possible.

Oh, I agree it's possible to get in with a sub-30 MCAT (very possible, actually)... Nobody said it isn't.
29 is below the tenth percentile for top ten schools though, so you have to understand my skepticism.

No reason to not get a 30+ though, it'll set you up for more hurdles/challenges while applying.

For me, November was brought on with my first rejection today. Gwu. =( Not liking November so far.

So I had the dreaded "what if you don't get in" talk with my parents last night, which was pretty sobering. Then woke up to 2 pre-interview rejection emails.

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

3.9/32/CA, doin' nothing for me now 🙁

Ouch, that sucks. Those stats should get you in somewhere though!

I'll be honest, I came into this application process during the summer thinking I'd be accepted somewhere by now; after 2 interviews, I'm wait-listed until May at 1 and haven't heard back from the other for 2 months.

This process is really sobering. Next weekend, I'm going to bust out the MCAT books and start prepping for a spring exam since it's been over 2 years since I took the test.

I thought that too, and I don't have a single interview! This process is getting pretty frustrating to say the least.

Your in a similar boat as me. interviewed at 2 schools, won't hear back until march for one, and the other in a few weeks. I've already dusted off my MCAT books 🙁. Looks like 3.8/31 just doesn't cut it.

With all due respect, you applied to some tough schools. You should have applied to a more broad range of schools, but I'm sure you don't want a lecture. Best of luck bro.

In the same boat! Only rejection from BU and applied to 20 schools...so when should I just give up...

I think many of you are approaching the problem the wrong way. From what I can share having interviewed (including dean of admissions), schools aren't just looking at numbers, but sadly SDN continues to perpetuate this overly simplistic perspective.

Schools want students with remarkable life experiences, leadership, and maturity. They also want students with great LORs, a factor that is for the most part under-emphasized and under-estimated in SDN.

NONE of the students I interviewed with were immature, myopic pre-med number crunchers. They were generally older, very interesting, with very strong communication skills. The interviewees were also very accomplished (PhDs, entrepreneurs, NGO directors, community leaders, etc.).

This whole "I'm from California with 3.8/30-33 and still can't get in for no reason" attitude isn't going to help you. Look at your weaknesses, because your numbers are fine. Did you apply broadly enough? Are your LORs FANTASTIC? Are you ECs/Clinicals/Research/Volunteer/etc. exceptional?

If you answered NO to any of those, then you should start cracking on those activities.

Hope this helped.😎

Banked on getting into my instate school (#1 choice). Also, every school I applied to has specific programs I am interested in and I didn't apply anywhere without those programs. Mistake, likely, but I have very strong reasons for each school instead of just applying to random schools that do not have opportunities I am seeking.

Well, I hope by now many of you have gotten as lucky as I have. Completed 21 secondaries from October 5th to November 7th.

Interview invites from 1st and 3rd choice schools along with a safety. Kind of shocked to be honest due to my abysmal verbal score (13/5/14Q ---> 12/7/13Q). Guess my sciences and GPA are pulling me through.

No rejections yet. I'd be happy if I rack up at least 5 leading to one acceptance.

Keep your fingers crossed!:xf: Still have time until end of March.

I've heard it both ways. That is, med school is all about stats and then what you said.

This could not be said any better....on the interviews I've been to, I'm blown away at the things many of the other interviewees have accomplished and are doing. Admissions committees are really looking for people with amazing experiences and developed passions in life not just the numbers. You definitely need the numbers but up to a certain point then it becomes all about you as a person.

Being a reapplicant, I know how much the waiting process sucks, and there's nothing I can say that will make you feel better (I know what it's like when people say that, it did no good to me). But all you can do is try to figure out what led you to not having interviews at this point and start making those changes in case you don't get in this year. Plus you never know; schools will keep interviewing until March. Good luck! :luck:

Another rejection. My life is pretty sad right now. Odd that the email came at 9 pm. So 25 applied, 1 interview and 7 rejections so far.

Hey dude, is the rejection from uc davis. i got one around 9 too, pre-secondary. i have one interview so far (interviewing this friday), applied to 30. 6 rejections.

at the end of the day, we just need one acceptance. so make that one interview count. That's why I'm preparing for that one now.

Yea it is Davis. That thread turned into a slaughter house on a Sunday night. How sad. I already went to my interview and thought it went well but probably everybody felt that way so don't know how it will turn out. Good luck.

Oh man, sorry to hear that. It's def suck for you since is post-interview rejection. Good luck with all the other schools.
