So, clearly labor epidurals are not a "legal right" for all patients? Here, we have an entire hospital devoted to EPIDURAL FREE DELIVERY. I can only guess how many of these women would change their minds if an epidural was offered at 5 cm.

I think this is a great idea!
I wish all pregnant women would follow the teachings of these two smart nurses and decide to not have epidurals and go natural.
This would make my life much easier.

Some people are saying that in this OBama healthcare system in the future....it'll be a set up like, if you cant afford an epidural you arent going to get one. Also, if you are a 99 yo with multiple med probs going for a CABG, again you wont be getting a CABG.

These are the ways he's going to 'save' money. I bet you those pregnant ladies that voted for him are going to be pretty ticked off once they find out about that!

That doesn't sound like socialism to me.

I don't think it's an EPIDURAL FREE HOSPITAL if they have an OR down the hall for C/S.

Spinals are in general, the preferred choice for C section these days. Faster, more dense block and more reliable with a similar incidence of headache in experienced hands. Hence, if you are going to get a C section (no labor epidural in place) the vast majority of time your regional anesthetic will be a spinal.

I wasn't implying they would use an epidural for C/S. I just can't imagine this hospital shuns epidurals but proudly displays an OB OR just down the hall, and a NICU upstairs.

Like Doze said, I think they just have a couple of special rooms, but otherwise a standard OB setup.. I would agree that if "natural" childbirth facilities were prominent in my community, I would much rather have the women attempt "natural" delivery in the crazy room around the corner rather than the crazy house 10 miles out of town.

I wonder what kind of a stink the new age parturients will raise when the "natural" labor rooms are full and they have to get stuck in one of those "regular" labor rooms. "But that doesn't go along with my birthing plan!"

The hospital where I did my residency had a floor for women who wanted to do the "natural" thing.

Any way, the bottom line is: who cares? Do what ever makes you happy.

I love patients with birthing plans. The plans are a good source of amusement, and you can make the occasional buck or two by betting on how many cm she'll be at when she abandons the ABSOLUTELY nooOOOoo EPIDERMAL bit.

LOL, that is awesome. The worst is when they have a doula with them, though...

My wife said natural childbirth wasn't that hard, and from where I was standing, the whole thing looked pretty easy.

What's all the fuss?
