Hi!

I have a blank in my leadership column and feel its too late. I'm pretty devoted to my college radio station (dj and host a talk show) but there isn't a "leadership" position. How much does leadership really matter? Any ideas for leadership in less than 1 year?

Assuming clinical xp, volunteering, 3.75 and 39 mcat, 2 yrs research-no pubs but 3 presentations, state school, asian, and strong LOR's, won a few 5/10/15k's would it be difficult to get into a top 25 med school?

As a dj for a talk show, don't you have to coordinate the other staff on how you want your show to run? That's enough leadership in my mind. Or maybe you can volunteer in the summer as a swim instructor or something. Either way, with a 39 MCAT, leadership is just a nice plus.

While leadership isn't a requirement for the application, I think you could spin Talk Show Host into a Leadership position. You are managing/organizing people, at the least. And possibly making programming decisons with the producer, or coming up with original ideas and selling them to your team.

Best bet is to try and take something you are currently doing/have done and turn that into a leadership position. Maybe a student group you are in? With the DJ stuff, I'm sure you can do something with it that requires you to lead your peers. Maybe set up a fundraiser through your radio program, who knows.... good luck 👍

Not sure specifically about the difficulty of getting into the top 25 schools, but when I do my performance reports for my Airmen, numbers/variety of events stick out to the higher ups. So possibly in your situation, # enrolled in school could be the number informed/led awareness about "x" cause, raised "x" number of $ for "x" cause, number of people led, etc. Idk if you can download it on a non-mil computer, but if you can get a copy of the AF Tongue and Quill, it could spark some ideas for this section. Also, from reading most moderators' notes on here, having a unique life experience is going to be nothing but a positive on your app.

Most overrated aspect of the medical application IMO. And don't force anything at this stage... adcoms can see right through that stuff (except cool gimmick EC's that they fall head over heels for).

Just be creative with your jobs and experience. If there is still nothing you can come up with, I'm sure it'll be fine (I didn't have any!)

To provide another data point: I also applied with no leadership experience (closest thing was being a TA) and got in 🙂. Leadership experiences are nice to have, but as others have mentioned, they are by no means a requirement.

Having some degree of responsibility over others constitutes a leader in my eyes. Try to angle some of your radio experience as leadership (ex. organized weekend shifts, delegated pickup of new records/CDs/8-tracks for the station, etc.).

Should leadership experiences within a class be listed? I was the leader of a team in an upper division history simulation course. The pressure and time demands of the position were pretty ridiculous, considering a third of each team's grade depended on their country's relative success, but roles in this course were drafted, so it's not as if I was appointed by merit, and the course was only one semester long.

What about being an area manager for a bike shop in HS, training and scheduling about 20 people for a one week sale off site. Was during my senior year of HS. Worth mentioning?😕

Did you run those races as part of a team or on your own? And you could find a way to make your dj stuff leadership experiences. I had no leadership experience and didn't designate any of my activities as leadership on AMCAS, although I was a ta and peer mentor, and it didn't hurt me at all, so it won't kill your application.

Leadership is nice but not essential.

The adcom does like to see that you engage with others, work well with others in a group, etc. Physicians today haves been likened to a pit crew that works together as a team so you want to show that you have the temperment to be part of a group that works toward a common goal.

Lone wolves, beware!

No. HS stuff is for college apps. College stuff is for med school apps. Exception is long-term hobbies/activities.
