well my science and last 45 hours are below i believe at 3.2 science, 3.4 last 45, and a 1120 on the GRE.. i feel like some people may have higher stats than i do that didnt get an interview..

*waves*

3.4 Science and Overall, 3.6 Last 45, 1200 GRE, and no interview. So I guess myth busted. Though I should include that I'm OOS so if you're IS, mayhaps it's different.

I did not apply to Missouri this year because when I spoke with admissions this spring they told me that they did not interview any OOS applicants with a GPA below 3.7

I immediately took them off my list. This is something that should be mentioned on the website.

Agreed. They must have needed the extra $70 from everyone. If that's the case, waste of time!!! Yeah, I'm a little pissed.

Well if they knew for sure that they weren't going to interview anyone below a 3.7 prior to application, then yah I'd be extremely pissed off as well. I could've done a lot with that $70.

But that doesn't seem to be the case unless the person earlier in this thread is just an anomaly. Maybe her supps got printed off onto glittery paper by accident and it was enough to by-pass the <3.7 GPA.

All in all missouri sucks.

Hey now, I'm from Missouri! It's a wonderful place to live and Mizzou is great! It doesn't sound like they actually used the GPA as a strict cut off from what other people posted anyway...

It's funny, a lot of people in Missouri think Mizzou will be a snap to get into because I'm in state (and to be fair it kind of was in generations past) but when you look at their class stats by year here is a noticeable upward trend. Their average stats for last years class beat out a lot of the top ranked schools. 2012 average GPA was a 3.74! I think Cornell's was a 3.5 and CSU was a 3.6. It's just a tough school to get into.

don't worry i grew up in MO 😀 i applied because i wanted to move back there since i liked it so much.

but with only one person saying they got an interview with a low gpa, i still think they used grades as the cut off and stole our app fees and time spent on the supp.

Yeah..thanks for pointing that out! Stats taken directly from the website: Average cum GPA: 3.74 Last Three Semester: 3.76. I'd love to be accepted here, especially because of the DVM/MPH program. I hope they don't use GPA as the final decision for accepted applicants though. That would definitely be upsetting...because I'm right on the line.

So, I'm feeling frustrated. I knew going in that OOS apps were pretty much a crap shoot, but I still thought I had a decent chance. My science GPA, last-45 GPA and experience are all strong plus I'm interested in a high-need area (public health). My GRE is average (1280) and my overall GPA is kinda low, about a 3.5, but I'm a non-trad and have averaged a 3.85+ in the classes I've taken since returning to school (while working full time). I've fostered cats and horses plus have a large variety of large, small, wildlife and zoo vet experience. And I've written a book (not vet related).

While I wasn't expecting schools to be banging down my door, I thought I'd at least get some interviews. But so far, nothing. Granted, two of my schools haven't sent any notifications yet, but I'm feeling pretty pessimistic at this point.

So I'm trying to formulate my plan B. Obviously, I'll retake the GRE if I don't get in, but I'm done with my prereqs and I have so many credits at this point that my overall GPA isn't going to move up much if I keep taking classes. So do I give up the job that pays me a living wage in order to work as a small-animal vet assistant to beef up my experience? Or do I keep working in my old field and continue to shadow/volunteer as often as I can in fields that interest me more?

Thoughts? Anyone else feeling frustrated?

Hahahaha we are application twins...except insert 3 years of toxicology research that I foolishly thought would help my application.

Right now I am not so hopeful and thinking strongly that my directly clinical (not animal, not research) is too limited and too old. Can't really afford to leave this job to go volunteer at a small animal clinic (I own a horse and have tons of student loans already) so I am working on developing a Plan B and even a Plan C. Not sure what those are yet. Was not planning on reapplying again and I think that still holds true.

On the plus side you have not heard from the big M yet😀

No news yet for me...next 2 weeks will be major I suppose. I'm quickly losing hope for isu or edinburgh as I haven't heard back. Just wanted to vent a bit....

I know the feeling, IHeartGoldens. My IS school should finally be sending out invites next week, so I'm crossing all fingers and knocking on any available wood-like products. But I've all but written off ISU at this point...

Edinburgh is really frustrating me right now...Yvonne emailed me earlier this week and said the rest of the decisions should go out by the end of the week. Still nothing.

Ha, we're about in the same boat - although I bet I am waaaay more non-trad than you (read: older). I also had to face that decision, to give up the well-paying former career and commit fulltime to starting over at square one in this field, just to get the experience I need. I knew I wouldn't get in just on grades/GRE, so I had to do everything I could to build up my experience. And that was some of the feedback I got from my #1 last round, that they were very interested but I "wasn't ready yet," meaning I hadn't really proven myself committed to this career change.

So I'm hoping this year, with over 1.5 years FT experience as an assistant in ER, plus coming back to apply again, I will have proven myself. It has been very tough financially. I barely make enough at the assistant job to cover my mortgage, and I still work PT at my former job and another job to cover my other bills, but even with that I've had to dip into my savings most months. Now my savings is almost gone and I'll probably be tapping into my retirement account next month. So that all kinda sucks, but that's how committed I am to this, and hopefully that makes the difference this time.

Anyway, don't know if that might make the difference for you, but I hope it does for me. I knew this change would be a struggle in many ways, but it's what I had to do. If I don't get accepted by my third try, I will probably pursue RVT certification, so either way, my experience as an assistant will help me. Take my advice for what it's worth as I haven't been accepted yet myself, but if you are really serious about your career change, jumping in headfirst, even with all the financial sacrifice, might be worth it.

Lunajett, i think that is good advice and i admire your dedication. I really hope it works out for you! It was a drastic change, but you have to believe that not only can it not hurt, but it could very well make the difference this year.

Thanks for the advice, lunajett. I admire your decision greatly, but I'm not sure it's one that will work for me. I already have well over 300 hours of small and large vet experience and thousands of hours of mixed animal experience. It's nearly impossible to find a clinic job in this economy, and frankly I'm kind of frustrated if that's what it will take to get me in. My state requires techs to be licensed, and my friends that have worked as kennel/vet assistants haven't seemed to have had much better expiences than what I've had at my local humane society and shadowing at dozens of clinics in varied fields. And it would hurt me a great deal financially (which it sounds like you're facing, too).

I think I'm going to wait and see what the ad coms recommend in my file reviews if I don't end up getting accepted somewhere this year. And in the meantime I'm still doing what I've been doing for the last five years: shadowing and volunteering in as many veterinary fields as I can during every possible moment of free time.

anyone else feel like the schools in the southeast do everything later. I applied to six schools and so far I've heard nada from 5 and had an interview at Kansas.

My IS school doesn't even do interviews and won't tell me anything until at least mid-March. I already have too many grey hairs for my age and this process is NOT helping!

Wow Lunajett, I really really admire your dedication - you're a huge inspiration!!! I genuinely hope that you get in this year!

I applied to Auburn, NC State, Virginia Tech, and University of Tennessee. The only school I have heard from was VT where I received an interview. I spoke with Auburn and they said that interview invites will be passed out in the next couple of weeks and NC State is supposed to be sending out acceptance/rejection letters on January 31st. I'm not sure how quickly UT gets interview invitations out though.

Tell me about it! I haven't even heard from her about the email I had sent earlier in the week (that I still got an automated message back even though it was past the 5th). I really wish they had sent everything out at the same time cause I am pretty sure they had all the decisions done at that time! First thing I do every morning is look at my phone and see if I have an email from Edinburgh. Here's to hoping we hear from them tomorrow!:xf::luck:

JCG, What state are you from? We are pretty similar except I applied to Kansas and LSU too. NCSU is my IS school and they decide on OOS students first and don't even look at us IS'ers until Feb. Argh!

I'm in that group that didn't hear anything from vmrcvm about interviews on Friday, so that could mean no such luck for me, but someone spoke to admissions and they said they weren't done with OOS interview invites, so I'm holding out hope.

I'm just so jealous of these people who have already been accepted and can start planning their lives for next year.

NC State sends out letters that early??? I thought it was April 1!?

Laurauva2009 I am from Virginia (and still have residency) but have been living in Kentucky for 1.5 working on my Masters degree. I still can't believe that NCSU does not do interviews at all, I feel like that is part of the process that I would excel at. As far as vmrcvm, hold out hope! If they said they are not done then I would imagine that they will be sending out another round soon.

And I agree! I am also jealous of those who get to start planning. However finishing this masters is keeping me plenty busy, so I try not to waste too much of my time on planning for the future at the moment.

I am just about to pull my hairs out!! How are we supposed to focus on school if we can't think of ANYTHING other than hearing back from these schools?! I have become an ADN junkie, my boyfriend is trying to help me stop checking this site 20 times a day because every time I check, I freak out!!! If only we could just know now!!!!

I'm off to cry now...

When I was applying 3 years ago, they sent out interview invites in mid to late Feb from UT. I know it feels like forever.

Delete Auburn and add Oklahoma State, and University of Florida for me. Did you talk to NC state admissions about the Jan 31st date by chance?

I did not talk to admissions, however their timeline is what indicates they will be responding to OOS students by the 31st (and by the 31st, I mean that is when letters will be mailed).

Hope that helps! Good luck to all! 🙂

Rockefeller, you know you shouldn't hold your breath for Oklahoma yet, right? Lol. Not a peep until mid-March for you OOSers! Terrible. :d

I am in state in Oklahoma 🙂 but yeah I was just especially curious about NC State! Thanks everyone!

Competition! *cracks knuckles* We'll see about that...

😛

Hah. Hoping for the interview invite any day now. Still no final word until March, but I guess we have an interview to stress out about in the meantime!

You might want to borrow some of nyanko's hockey sticks to deal with the competition. :d

haha yeah my mom is going to be thrilled if/when I get that interview invite. I live on the east coast and she never gets to see me.

As for competition, bring it!!! 😉

RockefellerVT.....that sounds like a smithfield baby!!!

tired of waiting. just reject me already

I am still in the waiting boat as well. Other than my CSU rejection (expected) I have heard nothing. I am expecting a letter from Washington any day now and hopefully Western will send out interview invites soon. I have also set up a perfect way to stalk the mail lady. The mail box is right outside the apartment…so I can watch her from my apartment window. So now I am not appearing creepy to her or interrupting her work. So as soon as she leaves I run down there and open up the mailbox…today was an empty mailbox🙁 . At least I have created a way to stalk the mail lady without being completely creepy. 😛

I like it! 👍

I dunno, twelvetigers. The East Coast may have hardened rockefellerVT -- she's only 5 hours from D.C., capitol of cutthroat commuters (I almost got freakin' killed this afternoon on I-95). Look both ways before you cross the street come interview time.

correction: just accept me already

well yeh that would be awesome, but 2 of the 3 schools I applied two are either done or almost done sending out interview invites. the third school I have another month or so before I hear anything

Yeah, well... she'll fall into a giant pothole because she's forgotten how damn bad Oklahoma roads are.

Oklahoma roads are straight, how can they be all that terrible! Haha, I had to assist another grad student with the Meats judging team and take them to a practice run in Stillwater and the only issue we ran into is we got ourselves lost on the way there!

Now if you want difficult roads try driving down the roads in the backhills (aka the old moon shine trails) of VA, WV, KY!

True, they're very straight... but not so level. See, we don't believe in keeping up with road repairs here... we just let it crumble until eventually it's just another gravel road. :d

Haha, yeah I could see where that would be a problem!

At least you don't have to worry about 1 year construction projects taking 5 years. I hate Phoenix construction...it is NEVER finished!!! :meanie:
