Most dental schools say no online courses. How do they know? I am going to retake the few that I have (pre-reqs) because I don't like to lie and I would hate to get in trouble over something so trivial. but I am curious.

probably when you send in your transcript from university of phoenix online they'll get tipped off.

There's really no way to tell unless you tell them, there's a specific section in the class info where you can specify it as an on line class. All of the schools I've got to don't differentiate between on line and non-online classes in their transcripts. Haha, the poster above me is right though, well known online schools might not be the best bet for pre-reqs.

I know it is possible to complete all of the pre-reqs online, (chemistry, bio, physics) because they're offered at a CC near me, and I actually took the first semester of Gchem online and got a B, and then retook it in an actual classroom setting because I didn't think I really learned anything! =D

Thanks for the info. the classes I have to retake are trivial. I don't want to waste the money, so I'll take them at a community college.

I am planning on taking 2 semesters of english, but my first one will be online because I will also be taking Calculus 2(in-class) and Intro Psyc(in-class) as well. Which classes are/aren't allowed online? btw im taking all these classes this summer at a community college just so I can free up next summer for the DAT!

As long as you don't take pre-reqs online, you should be fine. It doesn't matter if you took psychology online but generally speaking, online classes are frowned upon because we all know they are BS!

UF requires both Psychology and English as pre-reqs. SO if you take those online, you are breaking their rules. That's my point.

How does one take a lab course online? Do you meet for labs or do you not have labs?
Doesn't every school requires pre-reqs with labs? so it would follow that you'd have to be there in person.

Gchem and gchem lab are two separate classes at my school (unfortunately) so maybe that was the case there too

Hey purple. I am taking Sociology 001 online right now. I sent the course description to the admissions office at Michigan, and they are totally cool with it! This is post-acceptance though, so I don't know if that's your situation.

so you can take gen chem online at one place and the lab at the same time in person elsewhere? i never knew that was even an option.

i think i prefer science classes in person. better opp to ask profs question and study in groups.

We came in like 6 Saturdays for like 6 hours for Gchem, and did like 3 labs a day, it was pretty hectic. They also gave you a box of chemical solutions so you could do some experiments at home (like basic acid base titration, that kind of thing).

ah. i see. it isn't like everyone has burets and buret stands at home but i suppose a dropper would work. i'd miss that magnetic stirrer though! 🙂 🙂

I took some BS classes online, but nothing important and it didn't seem to matter much. I took stats online because it was a class of >1600 and online was the only section available to me.

Do they look down on online classes? I know "officially" they accept them and don't look down on them but in all honesty, I'm sure they do. Am I right to assume this?

Be careful with the online classes. Some schools DO differentiate on transcripts. For instance: I started out at a CC here in CO. When I transferred to CU, my transcript said HUM 123-500. The "-500" means it was an online course. I was assured that CU dental adcoms would be able to tell that I took that class online. Now, if your school just puts HUM 123 on your transcript, then you're good to go.

Keep an eye on the codes!

I understand that but what if you're working/volunteering while taking these classes while claiming that they weren't online? Wouldn't they know that 'hey how did this kid manage to do all of this while still going to his lecture?' if you really want to hide the online class bs. im not following your logic here. im not recommending this to anyone else lol
