I've got a dilemma. I find that many American pharm schools (if not all), require prereq grades of "C" or better, but I got a D+ in calculus and a C- in organic chem II, but all my other grades are pretty good. And I don't think we're allowed to retake courses that we have passed at my university (Toronto) , so is it pointless to apply to any pharm school in America? Does anyone have a similar problem? Did anyone get accepted to a US pharm school with grades less than "C" in prereqs?

What do u guys think I should do??🙁 Thanx!

You can consider retaking the calculus and organic chem courses at a community college or an alternative university.

Well, I'm kind of in a similar situation. My only C- is in Biology I. I'm hoping it will slide by. If any school complains by it I will probably retake it Spring of 2008.

As far as I know, schools generally only make exemptions if you have an alternate course which will cover that prerequisite. For example, if you've taken like 8 organic chemistry classes and Organic I is a C-, they may substitute one of your other organic chem courses if it qualifies.

The best thing to do, however, is to call the institution themselves. They know best what they'll do in your scenario. Be proactive, and you may be able to maneuver the bureaucracy better and get a better likelihood of exemptions and alternatives.

for my university, you had to have had a C or better in the prereq classor it doesn't count. You would have to retake it(the calculus one), and even then, the grades average out.

if you're not sure if your university will let you retake it... go to your advisor, explain the situation, and i would hope they would let you take it over.

Just to clarify, do Canadian schools consider anything but an F to be passing? Most schools in the U.S. consider a C- or below to be "non-passing" even though the grades aren't failing.

Yeah...you need minimum 50% to pass a course...(which is D-.... I think)

Yeah......I checked it out and I am "not permitted to retake courses in which I earned a passing grade just to improve my mark" at my University or any other post-secondary institution in Canada for that matter. (oh and community college credits are not equivalent to Univ. credits here in Canada) ....gosh you guys in the US are lucky b/c you can retake courses at Univ or a community college to improve your grades.

...But I still want to apply to Canadian and American Pharm schools. So what should I do? Am I doomed to never become a pharmacist b/c of that D+ I got in first year calculus....................🙁

What should I do you guys....is anyone in a similar situation or have advice?

While it may be true that community college credits aren't equivalent to university credits in canada, you may be able to enroll in a distance learning program for an american community college. You can also see if the American pharmacy colleges will accept canadian community college credits for your calculus I. Otherwise, you could always take an additional calculus-based class at your university.

If you want to go to an American pharmacy school, then take the pre-reqs at an American college. You might have to move, but you could get an internship to supplement the courses. Your decision just depends on what you REALLY want to do. Anything to boost your application will help!

Hey pharm614!

I'm in the same boat as u! I received a D in my O-chem and is not allowed to re-take it. So I researched a whole bunch of community colleges in my area, and then decided to do distant-ed (since all the college's o-chem class will conflict w/ my schedule).

I find that American schools are more willing to work with you on your GPA requirement than Canadian ones! 👍

I don't believe a student visa allows a non-resident to work in US.

It might be wise to inquire with a few US programs and see if they take Canadian CC credits. That sounds like the simplest solution.

Thanks for all your advice guys..I really appreciate it. I would've never thought of some of the things you suggested........🙂.

What about "W"? I had quite a few Ws in my prerequisite. But I usually made "As" after Ws.
