We took NBMEs for some of our courses, but not all of them and not always during the block. We ended up taking the Anatomy, OMM (NBOME), Physiology, Pathology, Micro/Immuno, and Pharmacology shelfs. LECOM.

Thank you for the response, im trying to convince my associate dean to start doing this. One of the complaints that our second years had this year was that they felt ill prepared for wording of board style question and second order question. I know MD schools do this , i was trying to get a poll of who else does. Does DMU and KCOM do this as well ?

As a second year student, I pushed hard to replace systems exams with NBME exams. My main points: they would better prepare us for board-style questions and would reduce grammatical and content errors that often arose in faculty-generated questions. The administration didn't go for it because they felt that instructors would not feel confident that the exam covered the level of detail they wanted it to. Also, removing the faculty from generating exam material was a slippery slope (I was told). My school recently moved toward cumulative exams administered at the end of each semester. These are NBME exams that cover all of the course material that we've been exposed to. Students were initially resistant, but I feel that it's a very positive step forward.

Mine uses NBME.

AFAIK, NBOME doesn't give out retired exams or rent out exams.

Thanks guys, I'm trying to convince my school to move towards this because the last class that the boards felt very ill prepared to take them because they were not used to the question style or format. Do you guys have any recommendations that would help me get the point across? @Goro what do you think ? Also sidenote can you purchase these exams by system yourself?

I know for clinicals and for the Step ones you can, but you need to set up an NBME account (see below). I don't know that you can get each individual basic science one. I think your school might have to get it for the class.

That's a huge help! Thanks, I appreciate it. I feel like some of the biggest weaknesses for students isn't always lack of knowledge but not understanding the way they word the question .

To be honest, one of the biggest strengths I found with my school's curriculum had more to do with the way they tried to make questions "board-like", and almost more importantly the fact that our exams covered a wide range of topics and were 4 hrs long. It made sitting for NBMEs easy, especially the shorter clinical ones. Its still hard sitting through 8 hr Steps/Levels, but I can't imagine going from 1 hr exams to an 8 hr one.

One thing that may be just as valuable for your student body as this might be the use of question banks. If your class for example utilized UWorld or even Combank/Comquest regularly enough during 2nd year, I doubt students would really feel caught off-guard. Maybe your school can incorporate a Qbank into the curriculum (like include a subscription for all students) and have periodic reviews like that.

i appreciate the input! its so hard getting input from people who have actually gone through instead of m1s spitting "knowledge "
