Hello everyone,

I'm a clinical Optometrist in Israel, and it is acceptable here that ONLY Ophthalmologists refract children under 8 since Optometrists are not allowed to use Cycloplegia (or any other eyedrop medications) Still However, many Optometrists do check children under 8 (non-cycloplegic)

I was wondering what's your opinions- Do you think it's a must using a Cycloplegic check for children under 8? and what are the THINGS an Optometrist might 'miss' by not doing so (besides overminusing) ?

Thank you very much for your thoughts !

I'm guessing that if using cycloplegic agents is outside your scope of practice then treating accommodative ET might be as well. This is one area that you would want to be sure to give the child their full cycloplegic refraction.

Well you do have the option of dynamic retinoscopy and the Monhindra's technique, but really understanding the drug: atropine and others; is important. It is not really a must for you to do cycloplegic refraction, just be good in your retinoscopy.

I am from Nigeria, I never said anything about where I am from, you must have misunderstood me, but I would like you to know I regards Israel as my spiritual homeland. 👍
