Non-prereq online classes stigmatized?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does your school mark online classes on your transcript? If not med schools won’t know anyway (my school does not mark online classes)

I took a non-science online and am doing fine so far this cycle. and its on my transcript

Hi all,

I'm a non-STEM major and as a result have a lot of non-prereq classes required for my degree. Would it be frowned upon to take a lot of these political sciences courses online? None of my med school prereqs are online.

(would appreciate faculty input on this as well! @Goro @LizzyM @Faha @Moko @Catalystik would love your thoughts)
Me personally? I'm not a fan of them.

If they are the only thing you can do because you're in the military, then that's ok

I think it is pretty strange and backwards for medical schools to look down on online courses. They are not any less than in-person courses. It is pretty unfair to students at public schools who may not be able to have as flexible of a schedule as students at other schools due to limited course options and space... I have to take physics 1 and 2 online unless I take 28 units next semester (compared to the recommended 15 which I am already well above) although I can take the lab physically. What is wrong with online???

Theyre easier lol

It is the same material... Easier in the sense that there is more flexibility I suppose, but that is not an indication of less knowledge.

My husband’s online calc class was the same material, yes, but all exams were non-proctored. That by itself makes it easier.

This depends on where you take the class. Any online classes I ever took were proctored via ProctorU, who monitor your computer processes and watch you after you provide a 360* scan of your room. The debate of academic rigor in online coursework versus brick-and-mortar classroom isn't a debate I'm looking to enter at the moment but let's not pretend students aren't cheating in traditional classrooms either. 😉

Oh, i know.
But there is a stigma with online courses for a multitude of reasons.

70% of my college education has been online. Not a big deal if they are non-prereqs and such. One of my letter writers was an online professor. N=1

I mean many, many secondaries Say your pre-reqs, in so many words, better not be online
