Hi Guys,

I'm wondering how many of you are non-science majors (not sci/non-sci double majors) out there who are applying to medical school. If you could answer the following questions, I'd be greatly appreciated. I'm kinda testing the waters to see what other people did - I'm trying to figure out what to do with my own situation. Thanks!

1) What major?
2) Why not a science major for med school?
3) How many science courses have you taken above the minimum (General Chem, O-Chem, Bio, Physics)?

1) BFA in dance (1999)
2) because I didn't decide to pursue medical school until 2 years after graduating for college
3) I took 2 semesters of anatomy and physiology in undergrad for science requirements cause I was interested in it. Didn't take any of my prereq's in undergrad.

1) Philosophy; minors in bio and inorganic chem

2) I actually started off as a Genetics major, but I fell in love with philosophy... I figured that i'm going to spend all of med school studying science, but I will never again have the chance to learn philosophy, so I went for it. Best decision I ever made.

3) I took genetics, neural and behavioral genetics, systems physiology, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, chemical bonding, a grad class in cardiology, and a summer class in Anatomy at JHU med school.

1.) English; bio minor

2.) Because I love literature, and like quideam figured that I would have plenty of time to study science in depth in med school but will likely not have another chance to study english this way.

3.) I have taken genetics and evolution, will be taking vertebrate anatomy in the fall, and probably biochem in the spring.

1) Philosophy; Chem minor

2) Started as a chem major, took a philosophy class and at first hated it, but I realized I hated it because it was such a challenge, and eventually loved it for that. Might be better not to ask. I also find it a great compliment to science/medicine . . . and historically philosophy was a large part of the medical curriculum.
Ah, if only for the good ol' days when we could all be fat, bearded, and 'theorizing' what imbalance of elements may be causing someone's depression.

3) P. chem and advanced organic

Triple major -- history, religious studies, and ancient mediterranean civilizations.

I didn't know that I wanted to go to med school until I graduated.

I'm taking physiology and genetics this semester; I'll probably take biochem and immunology next semester.

1) Anthropoly major...but concentrated in physical anthro so I took my lower division bio (without lab) plus anatomy and lab in undergrad.

2) I didn't really have the confidence, experience or realization of what I really wanted to do in undergrad. (what was more fun at the time: studying my butt off or beer and frisbee? Guess what I did...) Plus, How could you not love anthorpology? After becomeing a writer for a travel medicine web site in 1999 and working with some amazing physicians I realized that I was seriouis about my interest in medicine, and decided to finish most of my pre-req's as a post-bacc student.

3) as a post-bacc I've taken physiology and lab, microbiology and lab, genetics, and biochem

1) Psychology
2) I was a chemistry major for a bit, but decided psychology was much more useful in life, not to mention more interesting.
3) I will probably take genetics and something else.

1) Psychology
2) I am interested in psychiatry and also I am very good at psychology (head of University of Rochester's med school admissions told us during undergrad freshmen orientation that you should major in something because you like it and are good at it)
3) I haven't yet but may take anatomy and physiology

1) anthropology (physical), chem minor
2) it seemed like fun... i take classes that interest me
3) primate biology, human anatomy, primate ecology and social structure, biochem, human growth and development, evolutionary genetics, organic chem III, human physiology, behavioral ecology, ecology

1) Interdisciplinary Studies in Chemistry and Art History
2) Would you like to read my AMCAS personal statement? 😉
3) Biochemistry and Lab, Inorganic and Lab, Entomology and Lab, Coral Reef Ecology, Structure Elucidation... but no P-Chem!!!

1.) BBA 2000 (Business Administration) - UMich
2.) Wanted to study something other than science since I was already going to be taking all of the premed reqs. A BBA is also more marketable in case I decided not to go to med school. Now, though I'm trying to combine all of my interests with a dual degreee MD/MBA.
3.) Biochemistry, P-Chem, Genetics, Physiology

English

I need philosophy and literature to survive. Can't be asian with just science.

Only things I took/am taking outside the reqs are honors calc I, II, and III and also doing 3 or 4 biotechnology independent studies.

1. Physical Education. No backtalk now, or you'll be doing push-ups.

2. I decided on medicine my senior year.

3. Requirements plus genetics and biochem.

Political Science and Biology

1. Philosophy; still looking around for minors.

2. why? because i would much rather spend my time reading about Heidegger than Kurtweil's law of electrothermodynamics.

3. genetics, biomedical engineering, and botany. (not sure if that counts)

1. Political Science, minors in spanish, math and history
2. i hate science so i figured i would study things i like
3. i only took anatomy which was beyond my school's requirements. but i am taking a year off and taking biochemistry, immunology, neuro and some more spanish classes.

1. math major, chemistry minor
2. started out as an econ, math double major, but quickly realized how useless econ was and how fascinating math was. so i ditched econ and stuck with math. 😀
3. i still haven't finished the bio requirement. planning on taking biochem, inorganic chem, and physiology next year though.
