Im 21, currently studying in my EU home country. Im at a small uni in my second semester, working on a degree in environmental sciences, but Im also a certified dental assistant, and currently working on volunteering with Red Cross. I am hoping to eventually study medicine in the US. Im still working on my plan on how it would be best to make that work, but recently a completely new possibility popped up that would change the entire course of my studies.
Essentially, my plan was applying to community college as a transfer student for the semester starting fall 2018 as an international student in the US, and working my way up from there. Id need a TOEFL, good grades, but thats basically it, nothing too hard. What changed however, is that I might be able to finish my degree at the uni Im currently attending, while still spending the next year studying in the US.
I need to pay a NACES member organization to figure out my transferable credit if I have any, I will ask them about the transferability of my possible degree.
If I do get lucky, and Im able to make my degree valid in the US, I would basically have a BS in the US in a year or two, instead of 4, and free to attend postgraduate opportunities, ie: med school. With my degree being completed in my home country, I could focus my time spent studying in the US on extracurriculars and getting all my coursework done, without having to concentrate on completing my second degree at a US institution.
This of course is fairly difficult on its own, since both universities have to be aware of this. One student in my course was allowed to complete the 3 year degree in 2, I was allowed this year to overstep the limit of classes Im allowed to miss. Ideally, Id have to ask my current uni to allow me to miss classes again(essentially only coming home from the US to take exams) and itd be great if they would also allow me to complete the degree in 2 years, but thats stretching it, to say the least. I should be happy if they allow one of those things, especially if they know Im studying in the US in the mean time.
If my education and pre-med requirements are "pieced-together" in a sense like this, could it still make for an attractive, competitive application?
