probably a very stupid question but what does normalization mean? I received an email from a professor about the midterm that said normalized on the syllabus will not be normalized anymore. is that good or bad..I don't even know what he's talking about.

Normalization: def.
v. to normalize, as in the exam was ABnormal, so NaCl & H2 were added and the AB taken away to normalize the results. It's the opposite of abnormalization.

🙂

Just a little humor to start the week.

I have no clue what normalization is.

i'm not sure if your professor means the same thing as this, but in chem lab here at UCLA, all the lab report scores are normalized at the end of the quarter.

what does that mean? basically, each TA grades differently, some harder, some easier, and since the lab reports are worth over half your grade, the professor normalizes or equalizes the scores at the end of the quarter so everyone is on the same playing field. if you have a hard TA, your scores will go up. easy TA? then you're screwed and your lab report score will go down.

its actually a very ******ed system if you ask me, but whatever. not entirely sure if thats what your professor was getting at, but thats the experience that i have had with normalization of grades

Yep, agreed with the posts above. I think what your professor means when the grade is not normalized anymore is that what grade you receive is what you get when is comes to determining your final grade. If the grade is normalized, the grade could change depending on how the rest of the class does or, if your school has a recommended average grade (ie B), the grade will be normalized to a B.

I know exactly what you are talking about...I am taking a grad statistics class and the professor uses t-scores...it is a way to standardize scores based on the standard deviation and mean of all scores in the class. It is not weighting the grade either...but it does make it a more fair way to evaluate. In fact, my homework I am studying at this very moment is about t-scores, z-scores and raw scores. Gimme a problem, any problem...🙂

The GRE, ACT, SAT are all standarized...just like your class score was supposed to be.

thank you all. I don't know why he would normalize because majority of the points come from multiple choice part. I guess he was thinking about the show work portion but I am not sure. my guess is that the everybody in class did well on this exam so maybe that's why no normalization?
