North Texas weather

Getting funneled into one of those express lanes. No thanks
My friend Stuart is in Dallas to take care of his dad post surgery. He's from Philly. He told me that the drivers down there have clearly never driven in slippery conditions in their lives. DOH put down zero salt anywhere. There are no plow trucks in the entire state. It's like a ballet of stupidity. Put the car into first gear, folks. That's step one for rookies. Maybe you'll graduate to being able to use higher gears eventually. Stay several car lengths behind the car in front of you. The highway median is there for a reason. If you are sliding toward another car, try to slide over into the median. Be careful around hills in town. Don't forget, once you start going, you don't stop. Make sure the cars in front of you won't have to stop before you go down them.
It's like 20 million 16 year old drivers all at once down there. lol.

The toll road in the middle of I-35 has a narrow median strip on the right side of each lane and each direction is bracketed by concrete median barriers so not much space to maneuver / escape this pileup.
I seen drivers in Connecticut spin out in the middle of a snowstorm down I-84 and end up on the center median (I very smart and driving during this same snowstorm) so "un-diligent" driving is not unheard of in locales that regularly experience bad winter conditions

It'll help you get going. It won't help you stop. But muh 4x4 can get through anything!
All wheel drive or 4x4 wont make any difference when all four wheels are sliding on ice.But muh 4x4 can get through anything!
I will venture to guess that they don't sell snow tires at any tire store within a 100 mile radius of Dallas fort worth. An all wheel drive vehicle with snow tires properly driven on roads with some plowing and salting is quite doable. This is the regular winter weather driving in a large part of this country. I regularly see cars travel above the speed limit on ice packed roads. All wheel drive or 4x4 wont make any difference when all four wheels are sliding on ice.
Im sure you can get some somewhere in dfw. Although i would think its rare. Either way, no one, i mean NO ONE, in texas, let alone in dfw will have snow tires installed or have it handy in their garage lol hence the 100 car pile up.I will venture to guess that they don't sell snow tires at any tire store within a 100 mile radius of Dallas fort worth. Were roads treated for ice before Fort Worth I-35W crash? Lawmakers want answers.
You'd think constant vehicular movement would keep the lanes "de-iced" if properly treated

Texans own like 1,000,000 guns just in case the Chinese invade. Because they want to be prepared for the worst.
Then 6 inches of snow makes their entire society grind to a halt because they don't own highway salt.

Not sure how this comparison works but i dont think texans care too much about chinese in relations to gun ownership.Texans own like 1,000,000 guns just in case the Chinese invade. Because they want to be prepared for the worst.

Eric Swalwell may need one though. Or be able to control his asian fetish.
We do own highway salt. But its not about that. People here arent used to driving in the snow since its a rare occurrence. Just like chinese invasion. But if it does happen, guess whos gonna stop them? Yup, we texans are gonna fck them up lol.
It's called a joke. Not sure how this comparison works but i dont think texans care too much about chinese in relations to gun ownership.
Yeah but it's not exactly a fair comparison since we also have the resources to deal with it in the north. Plus experience driving in snow/icy conditions.Funny seeing it play out like an apocalypse like scenario when it gets a little cold in the south for a few days.
All the while we in the North live in a tundra without batting an eye for 3-4 months.
Maybe people in the South aren't as tough as they think they are. Get temps below freezing and they are calling in the national guard and shutting down entire cities.Yeah but it's not exactly a fair comparison since we also have the resources to deal with it in the north. I'm just poking fun at our southern neighbors. I used to live in the South. On a cold day the news reporters were out with their cameras showing everyone the "frost" building up on cars and the side walk .
Right back at ya. 😉It's called a joke.
Tis true - when we get a single snowflake down here we cancel everything (work, school) lol. To be fair, we get like one snow storm every 10-15 years.Maybe people in the South aren't as tough as they think they are. Get temps below freezing and they are calling in the national guard and shutting down entire cities.

For the record my 4x4 joke was me pretending to be a Texan feeling invincible in his lifted f150 on summer tires.
I'm from the Northeast and know not to mess with ice. In fact I'm sure WVU and myself were out at the same time scrapping a half inch of ice off our cars last night to get to/from work.
The all wheel drive over confidence thing is real though. It's always an SUV I see in a ditch during snow storms.

I hope everyone is safe and staying indoors. We had power outage periodically and some of my neighbors havent had power for almost 24 hours. I am told wind turbines are frozen and energy surge cannot be kept up. My pharmacy has been closed for two days now. Things are getting pretty crazy in Texas right now.
I think this reflects not just on Texas, but on our current society as a whole.....Texans own like 1,000,000 guns just in case the Chinese invade. Because they want to be prepared for the worst.

YesAren't renewables the future?
No, frozen wind turbines aren’t the main culprit for Texas’ power outages
Frozen wind turbines in Texas caused some conservative state politicians to declare Tuesday that the state was relying too much on renewable energy.
They have an independent power grid from the rest of the country to avoid regulations, some of which would have required windmills and natural gas plants to work in sub-freezing temperatures, saving them some money in the short term by building non-robust power plants. Despite winter storms causing outages 10 years ago, they decided it occurred so infrequently, it wasn't worth the money to future-proof.
This is literally the result of the "all regulations are bad" mindset finally coming home to roost.

This is such a crude statement to make.COVID kills 500,000 Americans: “it’s no worse than the flu, keep going to bars and restaurants, no masks needed”
Snow: “SHUT...DOWN...EVERYTHING”
Covid discussion at this point becomes way too political and polarized, i wont say anything about that.
We havent shut anything down because snow kills people. There is no policy to shut anything down due to snow. Its just not a safe condition, in any city or place when you havent seen this type weather in a long long time.
Its like you playing in your high school basketball team and all of a sudden Lebron James checks in for the opposing team. You lose by 100 points. What do you do? How could you have planned better? Same concept.

Texas could have winterized their electric grid better. Or had salt. Or own plows. And not be so laughably bad at this. 6" of snow and you've got people foraging for **** to burn and stand around because they are freezing to death. It's like an episode of The Simpsons featuring a caricature of Texans in the snow that seems too ridiculous to be true. This is such a crude statement to make.

Lmao
People in Dallas like to drive bumper-to-bumper at high speeds. Not ideal during these conditions.
Funny how they aren’t talking about secession now that they need that FEMA $$$Texans own like 1,000,000 guns just in case the Chinese invade. Because they want to be prepared for the worst.

It reminds me of a small town I used to live in where they decided it snowed so infrequently (like one time per year) that it theoretically made sense to sell their snowplows for a budget shortfall. Queue mass pandemonium for an entire week when it snowed the next year.Texas could have winterized their electric grid better. Or had salt. Or own plows. Winterize our roads, strengthen a grid? Here in Texas we had more important things to do like stop gay marriage, prevent expansion of Obamacare, stop transsexuals from using certain bathrooms, making sure it's ok to carry weapons at church, prevent women from having control of their body, restrict voting rights.....winterize roads? We're much too busy for that.Texas could have winterized their electric grid better. Or had salt. Or own plows. They are the future. The problem is Tex-ASS decided it wasn't worth the money to winterize their coal plants, natural gas plants, nuclear plants or wind turbines. We have feet of snow and cold weather in PA and our wind turbines are pumping out electricity. They all failed. It's about the asses in the Tex-ASS government that do not understand where utilities are concerned, you prepare for every eventuality You don't cripple the second largest state in the country on the alter of cheap electricity and sort term profits.Aren't renewables the future?
First of all, the snow didn't really cause problems, it was the temperature. And not just the temperature, but the sustained lows throughout the week that kept energy demand high. Plowing and salting roads wouldn't have kept the grid running, the roads were a small inconvenience.
Also while you're hating on Texas, keep in mind that people froze to death in their homes. Snow tires don't help with that.

Where I live winter is half of the year. So I have little sympathy for others who have to deal with winter weather. Yes you will die if you are exposed to prolonged cold temperatures. Snow tires will keep you out of accidents and on the road instead of in a ditch freezing to death. Instead of playing victim some Texans should own up to their arrogance and culpability which led to this disaster. Even the boy scouts know to be prepared.First of all, the snow didn't really cause problems, it was the temperature. An 11 year old boy froze to death in a mobile home because the power was "rotated off for 1 hour" and never came back on. Would you call him a victim? What I don't get is all of the frozen pipes..esp.in private dwellings...Apparently no one realizes that you turn off the main water supply to the house and drain the pipes??!
The boy might be a victim simply due to his age, if this person was older who the hell sits around and freezes to death? You on the other hand come across as an arrogant Texan. You don't live in a cold climate but reject what others who do say. All I know is my homes were a nice 68 degrees inside even when it was -23 outside. If the power went out I would still be toasty. An 11 year old boy froze to death in a mobile home because the power was "rotated off for 1 hour" and never came back on. Would you call him a victim? Sue the power company for not winterizing their equipment and sue the manufacturer of the mobile home for not properly insulating it and sue the power company for rotating power instead of keeping it online.
Anyone whose family member died/got injured in the wreck on the toll road should sue the company for not salting/sanding and plowing the roads.

Nah, what we do here is keep the water running the whole time. Moving water doesn't freeze especially moving hot water.
Your point is well-taken, at least by me, but wasn't it Ted Cruz who said Texans would prefer to go without power than accept any government regulations? An 11 year old boy froze to death in a mobile home because the power was "rotated off for 1 hour" and never came back on. It isn't in the public interest to saddle Texas families with thousands of dollars in electricity bills

Texas pauses electric bills as some get hit with thousands in costs
Electric bills are likely to rise for everyone, experts and consumer advocates say, but some Texans on variable rate contracts have been hit with immediate, massive price spikes. Lawmakers and the governor have promised to help, but haven't said how.
I am torn. It is objectively awful to charge exuberate rates during an emergency. But Texas is all about personal responsibility, right? Those customers didn't have to choose a wholesale variety-rate plan. That was the risk they choose when they picked that plan. They wanted the lower rates and they choose the risk of spikes when they did that. That's the problem with giving people choices - they choose wrong and then want to be bailed out.It isn't in the public interest to saddle Texas families with thousands of dollars in electricity bills

But price-gouging is still price gouging. I mean who could predict over a 1000% increase in rates? Those wholesale rates should never have been allowed to begin with. Raising the prices didn't increase supply, after all, the suppliers didn't need additional motivation to increase supply. It was entirely a production issue, not a demand issue.
It's almost as though customers don't.... read the fine print.
