Well...I asked for the corner lake view room (room #10 on each floor) because it is hugeass....instead I got a couple doors down. I'm guessing that #10 is pretty popular. Otherthan that I got everything I wanted(lakeview, tub, any floor above 8, etc.)

Anyone know anything about NU's Information and Technology center?

$65 for Microsoft Office? Is that ours to keep forever for 65 bones? Does it include everything that MS Office normally includes?

Heres a link

hey UCLA man, i just got a powerbook...

...unbelievable. it is the greatest thing since sliced bread

the built in unix terminal is sweet, and os x is just gorgeous. it is very compatible with almost anything you need to do/use on PC's

i would reccomend the 15inch titanium powerbook, combo drive (do you really need to be burning DVDs?), and in my case i upgraded to 60gig HD space and 512 MB ram.

..damn, it is expensive though😱

-Allen

let me know if you have any questions about it. being that it is airport ready, wireless shouldnt be a problem

Just got my housing assignment -- room 1405.

marq_bme...thanks for the 411...your mailbox is full though and I wanted to ask a couple questions.

It's yours forever, looks like it includes everything too. From the FAQ,

"When a student purchases a product under this program, the product becomes the property of the student. The product will not terminate or expire simply by virtue of the termination, suspension, or other interruption of the student's status as a matriculated student."

"Yes, a product purchased through Student Select offers the same functionality as a product purchased through the retail market. "

I'm NU Med Class of 2010 - does that count? 😀

What about buying a computer through that NUCat? I'm gonna get a new one for College, so I figure I might as well get a good one and take advantage of the student discount...

Hey guys,

I used to work for NUIT during undergrad. I'm not sure of how things go in the downtown campus but... In general take advantage of the tech stuff NU has to offer. For instance, I don't know how downtown is with wireless but if you are into that stuff look into it...It's starting to become big in Evanston but not as many people are taking advantage of it. Especially think of this if you considering desktop vs. laptop. Anyway, be sure when checking out the student discounts how much you can get from online catalogues. When I bought my iBook, I ended up buying mine from somewhere in CA (I think) so that I didn't have to pay sales tax. It was cheaper than NU's discounted price. If you have any other questions I may be able to answer them...but I stopped working for NUIT a year ago and things have changed since then (and I didn't help those on the chicago campus) so keep that in mind.

Another option for those of you still looking for housing: I just moved into an apartment at the Galter Carriage House. Along with the Worcester House, it is one of two apartment buildings within a block of the med school that are subsidized by the hospital and only accept NU med/law students and employees of the hospital. Although it is a bit more expensive than the dorms, I have 840 square feet overlooking the contemporary museum of art and will just chalk up those extra bucks to quality of life improvement....at least until the loans start adding up 🙂 They both have waitlists--although I had no problem getting a place when I needed one. Good luck and see y'all in the fall!

I'm going to try to get in there, but I hear that the waitlists are huge at both Galter and Worcester. ack.

hey lotv, I just called Galter and it sounds like they have a few 1 bedrooms available. I'm going to check it out when I'm in chicago next week. How new are they? Do you mind if I ask you how much you pay? (you can pm me if you'd like) Thanks.

Hey does any one have any idea of what goes on during the orientation week, I'm just sooo excited and I want to know what fun things they have planned for us. ...any MS1 or MS2 lurkers that could give us the heads up 🙂

Peace~ Doc

marthpodi - You can't buy a computer directly from the school. All they have is some NU links to dell and other companies that give you a discount. If you look around for coupons though online, you can probably get the same discount.

Doc - Mornings and afternoons there's some standard stuff - activities fair, curriculum introduction, financial aid info, and lunches are sponsored by different groups (amsa, amwa, etc.) The fun stuff is at night 🙂 The notables are a faculty dinner (4 or 5 med students have dinner at a faculty member's home) and a big sibs dinner (an M2 who's there to help you out with questions you have during the first few weeks. They try to pair you with someone with a similar background). On Friday, you have your first "class" but it's low key, not a science units lecture 🙂 Friday afternoon is founder's day where you listen to the dean type people talk for a bit and get your white coat (lots of families there so bring them if you'd like) and yeah did I mention clubs/parties at night?

lunches are sponsored by different groups (amsa, amwa, etc.)

Yay, I luv free food...thanks NU cat

Peace ~Doc

Yay!! sounds like fun. The nerves are starting to kick in though, is anyone else feeling this way?

It's med school. You dream about it for so long, and now that the reality is setting in, it is both exciting and frightening. It is a whole new chapter in our lives, a new city, a new environment, new people. I think the whole newness of everything is making me a little queasy.

Nonetheless, i am definitely looking forward to meeting you all. Thanks to SDN, i'll probably feel like i already met some people!

I see where you are coming from.

If anything I am worried that there are too many cobwebs in my brain from taking the year off that I won't be able to hack the academics.

Dude, try taking 4 years off. My brain has been challenged by such complicated problems as, "who's aboard the beer train tonight?" and "did you see ed norton's ass in those shorts?"

Everyone kept saying that the first few weeks is an easy transition with your basic biochemistry and genetics review. Yep, don't remember that stuff at all. If y'all need me, I'll be the one camping out in the library nursing a coronary from stress. Just kidding...kind of.

I'll be in chicago starting at the beginning of august, so I'll be getting ahold of all of you there for the summer for some pre-stress fun.

Let's put together an email list for Northwestern SDNers. We can try and plan activities for this summer for those who are going to be around. Maybe a cubs game or something. I'll start us off:

I feel the same way! I haven't cracked a textbook since graduation three years ago. I can't wait to get back to school this fall! I guess I'm a huge nerd, lol -- I'm way too excited about the prospect of studying.

Hi kids-
Ever since the madness of acceptance time, I took a vacation from all things medical school, but I decided to drop in on SDN today and was very excited to see this thread! How's everyone doing?

I'm very sleepy so here's my progress in a nutshell: I don't have anything yet. 🙂 I do know that I plan to live off campus with a friend, probably north on the red line somewhere (lincoln park? lakeview maybe?) Anyone else in this boat? It seems like even those of you venturing out of the Lake Shore Center are getting 1-BRs or studios very close to campus. Come on, I need a morning red line buddy!

I'll be in Chicago frequently over weekends this summer, and I'll be moving to the city officially in early August, so keep me posted on any SDN get-togethers. I would definitely be down for a Cubs game- excellent idea.

(As you can tell, I am one of those naive people who forgot to consider Internet stalkers when choosing an email address. 😉 )

p.s. I am going to try to add myself to that yahoo group, but if you don't see me on there, can someone add my email? Thanks!

Okay, so I'm actually just applying... but maybe if I buy a round or two I'll loosen some tounges and hear all about your guys process and why NW. Plus I'm around Chitown all the time so it's all good... [/B]

I will do anything for beer........anything. muah! 🙂 Take Care. Paul

Good to hear from you again Chrissy. Go off campus-ers!

Hey everybody-

I am an occasional lurker to the Northwestern topics and figured I'd make myself known. I am going to be a molecular bio PhD student up in Evanston starting in the fall and my girlfriend is starting at the med school with yall. Anyway, I was prompted to finally post by Chrissy, as I was looking for someone else who is scouring the north side apartment scene. My girlfriend and I are looking at places in the lakeview/wrigleyville area so I can hop on the red/purple line and go north and she can hop on and go south (or drive and get a parking pass, she hasn't decided yet). How are you going about looking for places? We're using the Chicago reader SpaceFinder at www.chireader.com and the Tribune's online classifieds to get an idea of whats out there, and then we're going to Chicago in a week or so to actually find a place.

Anyway, just thought I'd finally say hi. Congrats to you all and I'll probably meet you sometime or something.

You won't want to live much further north than Belmont -- you can't get on the purple line any further up than that, and the red line will take forever to get you up to Evanston! If you live near the Belmont or Fullerton stops you can both catch the trains you need with ease.

Hey guys
just snagged my apartment at the Onterie--for much much less than the anticipated $900-1000-- if anyone is looking at that building I suggest you talk to Lola Tatone, she is sooo nice, and made the process virtually painless-- she's even gonna keep an eye out for a cheaper unit if one becomes available before I move in in August

Peace~Doc

Hello hello....I have been a lurker on this site for quite some time. But after deciding definitively to go to Northwestern last weekend, I thought it was time to come out in the open! I am so excited about NW! Is everyone here living off campus next year? I signed up for Lake Shore - but after reading the last post about Onterie - I am rethinking the living situation. I know I am shy enough that I will benefit from living in the dorms in the beginning. But do you think there's a way to break the housing contract during the middle of the year?

The only way to get out of the housing contract during the middle of the year (short of dropping out of school or something like that) is to have a statement from student health services that you need to move out for health reasons (i.e. allergies that would be relieved in a newer building). I don't know how easy it is to convince the health service although I know it's been done. Without their consent, you'd be responsible for the remainder of your lease. Oh yeah, another way to get out is if you can find someone else willing to move into your room (pretty unlikely).

Hope that helps 🙂

Yeah, my hosts at Second Look had all broken their contracts at semester- from what they said, it was relatively painless for the one who had confirmed allergies already, but for the other two, they really had to get creative. I forgot what their excuses were, maybe seasonal affective disorder brought on by the lack of light from south facing windows? Also I think even with Health Service consent, there was a fee for breaking contract. Anyway, I met SO many people who had moved out at semester that I decided to sacrifice the mid-year hassle and just live off campus from the start. I hope this was the right choice. 😕

Oh but for those of you looking for apartments in the Gold Coast, the place they had was beautiful and I think they paid just $775 each for a 3 bedroom. So if you have roommates you could live with, check it out, maybe there's still some units left there. The landlord was Jerome H. Meyer (www.jhmproperties.com) and the building was 50 E. Chicago (about 2 blocks from NU). I think there might be some 2 BRs too.

Seth: Yay! I hope to see your girlfriend bright and early on the Red Line. The astronomical price of parking on campus singlehandedly convinced me to give my old clunker of a car to my little brother as a 16th birthday present. 😀

Hey doc ivy, I'll be right across the street at 420 East Ohio. Got a convertible there. I looked at Onterie too, great views. If anyone's interested in my building, studios are also reasonable, the building gym/pool is free, heat and A/C are included, and there is no deposit or security fee. They are gorgeous apartments too, 1.5 blocks from school.

Cheese2girl, I'm also a little nervous about the shyness factor with not living in the dorms, but I'll just try to make an extra effort to make up for it. It sounds like there are quite a few of us just on SDN living off campus.

I'll be moving in August 1st. Can't wait! 😀
