Northwestern vs. U Michigan...please help

I thought I had made up my mind, but now that the clock is ticking down (I have to decide by tomorrow), I'm starting to panic.

So, please vote! It's for MSTP if that makes any difference. Any comments would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If it were me, I would rather live in a big city, so NW is better...

UMich is my preference. The research there is awesome and it's just a great school. Northwestern is also great and has a wonderful match rate, however, the calibre of biomedical research out of UMich is "stronger" than NW's. As a medical school, I also prefer UMich. For some reason, I think they have a smaller class size, which I consider a huge plus. My only qualms with UMich is that they do not accept international students period. So the guy from Oklahoma might be the limit of regional diversity. Other than that, they are fabulous.

RNA girl, I PM'ed you

I think it really depends on the type of research you are interested in doing. I think it's really important to be able to pick out at least 3 or 4 people that you'd be interested in working with. While you may not work with any of them, at least you have something to fall back if you don't find anything else. I decided against UMich (I'm going to UCLA) because I felt that they were very weak in the areas of molecular biology and developmental biology, areas I'm very interested in. I have heard, however, that they are awsome when it comes to human genetics and physiology. I wasn't real impressed with NUMS, but it's a great location, and they are adding a lot of new faculty. Plus, they rejected me, so I'm very biased :)

Good luck, and you can't make a bad decision.

don't know anything about umich's MSTP, but a friend of mine is a MSTP at northwestern...she seems to be happy.

Well, I just voted for Michigan for reasons I've told you about many a time before. :)

I like the idea of living in a smaller setting, like Ann Arbor.

Michigan is ranked higher, which really isn't that important, but I think you would have to say that it is a tier above NWern.

And, it is closer to home, at least for you...

But I still don't think you can make a bad decision here. :)

U michigan at ann arbor has a strong international name!

NW is a terrific school, but it isn't well know outside of the united states...not yet anyway, and dont forget michigan has by far a superior research program and their USMLE scores far surpass NW....it's also higher ranked...

but I visited NW it is a great school...just damn expensive <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

chicago is awesome, go there

Ok, here is my two cents worth. I am from Chicago, went to high school 1 block away from Northwestern Medical School and will be going to U of Michigan for MSTP, just so you know my biases. I will make this long, since I know it's a difficult decision, bear with me.

I agree with all the previous posters... and go where you'll be happy. But here's my opinions/views. For Northwestern MSTP: It's got a nice almost brand new hospital. It's on the lake in Chicago (the best part of Chicago). It's got pretty good research in some areas like immuno. For UMich MSTP: The hospitals are also almost brand new. Ann Arbor is nice, not as happening as downtown Chicago to be sure, but you won't be bored. They are strong in almost every kind of research (I know from a friend they're well respected in RNA biology, if your name suggests anything). They are expanding like crazy. Two new, huge bio buildings in the next 4-5 years, one will be finished next year and hiring 40 new faculty. They library is great (Not so much for Northwestern). The director of the program cares to direct you and also makes sure you progress (I emailed 4 fellows and that's what all of them said). Also, the part of Chicago in , second only to Mt. Sinai and maybe UCSF. Even with your stipend the only realistic place you can live is the dorm (really small rooms, no view, sucks bad), unless you want to commute for over 15 minutes each way (that's the least). Even though Ann Arbor is fairly expensive, Northwestern is much more so.

Now my story: I interviewed at U Mich in December, had a good time. I chose it because it had a very strong research program, and the students still seemed relaxed and happy (less of a case at WashU for instance). Also, look at their website. Almost every student seems to have 3-4 and some even 7-12 papers published by the time they finished PhD, again not the case so much in other programs (in many they've told me that the emphasis should be learning not publishing. I agree to an extent, but you want to advance your career and no ONE will read your thesis, only papers). My interview at NWU wasn't as great. At first, they gave me MD only, then said they screwed up my application and gave me a combined interview as well. After going to strict-MD, and seeing I really didn't like the medschool as much, I decided to not even go to MSTP. (Administrative messes kinda tell you how organized they are).

Other Issues to consider:
- At NWU there are two campuses, so it's quite possible you'll have to split time between them, maybe move or if you're unlucky and have mentors in both campuses, then ???
- Last year NWU admitted too many students, so this year they scaled back a bit. I believe their class will be something like 6-7 or so, with at least one person coming from deferral. At UMich it's the opposite situation. The class before us had 7 students, so this year they interviewed and probably accepted more. Before I decided, I contacted Dr. Koenig and he's told me that there are at least 10 people committed to UMich MSTP this year, with me that makes at least 11. The most difficult moment for MSTP is when your med school classmates graduate, so you will want to have a sizable contingent of MSTPs to hang with.

Another way to decide: Do you want problem based learning or lecture. I agree with people that problem based will cut the time you spend in the classroom, but you can always skip lecture, too :) . One thing I really liked about UMich is those quizzes. Everything does not depend on one or two exams, and you can spread out studying and avoid procrastination and cramming (what me procrastinating? Posting on this board to avoid doing Biochem homework? I take the 5th, and admit to nothing).

Anyway, sorry this went for too long, and maybe transformed too much from an opinion to Northwestern bashing. Hope this helps. You can also always contact me through this board (I don't know how to PM, though). Hope this helps. :)

RNAgirl. We have something in common. <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" />

Hey everyone!

Thank you so much for all of your input!!!

Michigan was my original preference and most of your responses have reinforced my belief that it will be the best place for me. I think I was being swayed by the fact that I had such a great time at Northwestern's revisit weekend.

So, I guess I am 99% sure I'll choose Michigan...but I'll let you know what I finally decide, especially since some of you might be my classmates!

Thanks again! :)
Andrea

i'm graduating from nums. i agree - go to michigan. it's a better school esp in research. thus, you will have much better opportunities to go to a residency program of your choice, in all parts of the country. northwestern is just a decent regional school that doesn't have a great rep outside the midwest.

vansmack, check your PM's

•vansmack, check your PM's•••••Hey hawkeyes, how is it going? Still trying to decide where to go? I just wanted to ask if you could post some of your questions to vansmack on SDN instead of PM'ing, because I'm sure many of us will be interested to hear more of his experiences and opinions of the school now that he is graduating. Thanks.

sure, no problem.. I'll do that. I'm still limbo between NUMS and Michigan. It fluctuates daily. Though I'm on the waitlist at Mich, I want to be able to decide before May 15. No point in staying on a waitlist if you are just going to decline if they offer you a spot, you know? gel1, are you deciding between the two as well? Any other places?

Hi everyone!

It's official! I'll be heading to Michigan this summer and hope to see some of you there this summer/fall.

GregiG, to check your PMs, just click on the "MY PROFILE" link at the top of the SDN page. I'll be sending you one soon, and then we can exchange e-mail addresses if you would like.

Hawkeyes, I responded to your PM. Don't give up on the U Mich waitlist just yet!

And, again, thanks for all of the advice!
