Has anybody not accepted their match position?

I read the Match website and it indicates possible legal action....

Just curious if you are legal bound to accept the position and HAVE to go?

"If you are matched with a program, you must accept the position with which you are matched as described in the Applicant Agreement. If you do not accept your Match result, the sponsoring organizations of the Match will review your situation and may impose penalties on you, which may include sanctions, letters of admonishment, reporting your actions to your dental school, and/or other penalties as appropriate."

straight from their website.

i went through the same situation several yrs ago. although I do not recommend bailing on the program there is really nothing they can do in the way of legal action. the wording they use is intended to scare you. they could report you to sponsoring organizations and your dental school but that will only affect you if you intend on entering the match again. The bottom line is you do not have to accept the position.

Why would you rank the program if you would not attend?!! I understand that you might not like a program so much that you would not attend, but if that was the case, dont rank them... I am not sure the legal wording is inclusive of extenuating circumstances (you got injured or something like that).

No legal action. Just not a professional thing to do. I'd avoid doing that at all costs. Don't plan on applying to another match program in the future, ever.

Well...there's no way for the other programs to know...if you matched a GPR one year...didn't take the spot applied next cycle for pedo, that pedo program has no way of checking out if you matched or not previously

I dont think you will be able to register for the match again for an extended period of time. So you may be able to reapply again but prob not through the match

my understanding is you can no longer participate in the match if you refuse the result
