Hello. I would like to ask current/past students re: their core clerkship experiences, especially if they did not have a 1:1 student to attending ratio for rotations. My school follows a H/HP/P/F grading scheme. Was it more difficult to have a true learning experience during rotations if you were in a bigger group? Was it more difficult to secure a positive letter of recommendation, etc? I will likely have a 1:7 ratio for my clerkships. I attend school in an underserved area with no teaching hospitals, so I guess this is the norm. I just learned this is unusual because my friend attends a T10 and was shocked to hear that we do not have a 1:1 ratio.

Thank you in advance.

Not a big deal. Need to change your perspective.

If the team wins, you win. If you do well and focus on learning with a good attitude you will do well. More students makes it easier to stand out if you have a good attitude and display follow through on your tasks, paradoxically.

I went to a top 30 and we had a mix.

I think it was almost always about 1:3 to 1:5.

The only 1:1 I remember was FM, 2 weeks of outpatient IM, and some rando mini rotations within a clerkship here and there.

I was at a fairly large academic center. Just doing some quick math, we had 140 students per year, divided by 8 rotations. That's about 17. Let's take out 2 for people being out or doing other stuff. That's still 15 per rotation. I'm not sure we even had 15 IM docs on service at one time and I'm not sure we even had 15 psychiatrists in total, and even if we did - I can tell you from being on the other side at a teaching/academic institution, while we know what we sign up for, it's a lot to be on teaching service every day, week in and week out.

Sub-Is are generally more conducive for letters since you are more advanced in your role. Team mentality wins in any scenario.
