Let's say I have no acceptances by May 15th. Will schools that have interviewed me and put me on a waitlist look at this "after May 15 list" and say, "this applicant sucks, she has no acceptances so why should we accept her?", or will they say "this applicant has a high probability of matriculating if taken off the wait list here."

Or will they not look at the list at all?

What do you think?

Send in some additional pics, they'll be glad to accept a Foxy Doctor such as yourself.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the correct answer is to your question. It probably varies from school to school. Some probably go straight down their ranked alternate list, others probably take a look and see where their applicants currently stand. Wish I could be of more help, sorry.

Foxy,

You seem quite worried about not getting in. First you need to chill a bit, I thought you were the optimistic sunshine of light for all of us. Don't lose it now during this crucial time. At least you got 2 interviews so thats good, although like I had mentioned before the BU interview might be just to get onto the waitlist if you haven't heard from them yet. Keep the chin up.

To those of you w/ in-state acceptances: I heard that at BU, for example, if they see that you are holding onto in-state acceptances, they will probably not offer you a seat off of a wait list. This is why they instruct you to write them if you would prefer BU. This may also be the case with other schools that see the May 15th list...so if you guys want a school, tell 'em!

Keep the chin up.•••••whoa! I interviewed the first week of December, and they are gonna send out acceptances Feb 15th. It doesn't phase me that 2 SDNers got in yesterday, b/c another one got in a week before, and they are non-rolling 90% or so. So of course I'm still optimistic about them :D (and very antsy)

I was just wondering about this question, but I have every intention of gettin' in! But then again, someone told me I'll prob get in off the wait list since I applied late, so just thinking about all possibilities to kill time until Friday.

Here's an alternate question. Say you are holding an acceptance. Although you are really happy with this school, you are waitlisted at a school you prefer (not me, ahem... :D ). Is it expected that you will actively try to get off the waitlist? If it's ranked, as most are, there's no point in being pushy...right?

Wouldn't one assume preference if you are holding a spot on the waitlist?

I'll answer your question, Foxy...since I turned this into another me thread (sorry).

If your application is competitive and you are highly ranked on the waitlist, I don't think you will need to worry. You may even get a compassionate committee member who wants to spare you the hassle of reapplying (by pulling you over an equally competitive candidate who is holding acceptances elsewhere). In the end, though, somebody gets screwed. The applicant you displaced will have to attend another school, and some poor fella on that schools waitlist will be SOL. It's a vicious process! I don't think adcoms have that much foresight, though (I don't even think they care!).

hey swampman,

school me because I have missed something. How would the adcoms know that a candidate has multiple acceptances vs. one who has none?

I can't imagine they would be so altruistic.

This way, med schools can start taking people off of the wait lists and figuring out how many people they still need to fill their classes.

if you're on a waitlist at a school that you really want to go to, there's no question that you should make your interest very well known. write letters. call. write more letters and basically just pester the admissions office. some schools explicitly ask that you let them know of your interest, as i'm sure it weighs into an eventual acceptance, although of course it depends on waitlist movement. but even if the school doesn't actually ask you to do this, do it anyway!!!! be aggressive!! what would it hurt, anyway?

But, independent of us showing our interest with letters, phone calls, etc., will a school see that we have no acceptances and, for example, lots of waitlists, and think "this applicant sucks, she has no acceptances so why should we accept her?", or will they say "this applicant has a high probability of matriculating if taken off the wait list here."

I guess my question is: Does our # of acceptances or lack thereof factor into their decision at all?

the schools won't know we're on the wait lists...the only thing they'll be able to see is the one school that we are holding an acceptance at or the lack thereof.....but I still want an answer to my original question!

I guess it depends on the school, though, just wanted to know what you guys think.....I would say having no acceptances is a good thing cuz the school would feel segure in taking us off their wait list

I'm not gonna change the typo above (segure) because it shows that I was thinking in Spanish (seguro) and that's cool :)

i have no hard proof, but i really doubt that an adcom tries to guess your chances of matriculating in case they offer you a acceptance. they have no clue about the circumstances surrounding the fact that you have no other acceptances (perhaps you're really holding out for that one school and turned down all other interviews, or something) or other acceptances (again, perhaps you're really holding out for school X but have kept other acceptances just in case school X doesn't admit you--isn't how this happens a lot of the time??). i know plenty of friends who have gotten many summer acceptances off waitlists despite getting into numerous schools prior to may 15th. all they did was just turn around and turn down the new acceptance. i doubt that a school would think you sucked because you didn't have any other acceptances, because if they've already offered you an interview and found you too competitive to reject, then apparently there was something they really liked about you. different schools prioritize different qualities in their applicants and just because you haven't gotten in anywhere else (or because you have) doesn't mean that you're not a perfect fit for a particular school. but again, it helps if you let them know how interested you are in a school--some schools really take this kind of info to heart.

Sandflea, thanks for shedding some light on this subject! I think you're right.....hopefully I'll have at least one acceptance by then.....por favor Dios

I've been praying like I ain't never prayed before, all to no avail. I think He's onto the fact that I only become religious when I need something. :)

Thanks for the reply, sandflea. You made a lot of good points. I'm still waiting for some good news and I'm starting to go crazy. I guess I'm looking for any little thing that could adversely affect my chances in this seemingly arbitrary process.

a friend of mine was wait-listed at several schools. he mailed letters to the schools every few weeks saying he was still interested and what new things he was doing. he was headed to Vermont to go to school and got a call from PITT a week before classes. he graduated last year from PITT. he said that he did not want to be a pest but wanted to let them know that he was still interested.
