Does it lower my chances of getting accepted if I don't major in chemistry or biology?

I was just thinking to myself and I now have some regrets. I should've majored in business. If I don't get accepted to optometry or don't make it in optometry school, I can have a business degree to fall back on. Also, in the event that I do succeed in optometry school, I could probably use the business degree to open my own optometry office. I don't really know what I can do with a BS in chemistry or biology.

I really don't think it makes much of a difference. I have personally received an acceptance to optometry school with a BSc in Psychology......hope that helps🙂

Let me make a suggestion....

I don't know how far along in your educational process you are but I would suggest you go on the ASCO website and start doing some basic research about the profession there and the educational process required.

A lot of the questions you ask indicate you have done little to no research on this. You profess to have this deep interest in optometry and can't see yourself doing anything else but many of your questions and statements suggest a lack of personal development and maturity. Asking questions like "what do they mean by leadership experience" and "what kind of job can I get with a degree in chemistry" and saying things like "I'm 24 and never had a job because I was busy with my studies" and at the same time making posts detailing your dreadful academic performance due to your admitted procrastination just make me think you really really haven't thought this through well enough. You sound like a 17 year old after their first semester away from home, not a 24 year old grown up man or woman.

I know that sounds like a personal attack and it's not meant to me. Let me suggest you back up a little bit and do some more independent research and give your whole career direction a bit more thought. To be perfectly honest, after reading your questions and statements, I'm a bit embarassed for you.

I have done my research.

I have done lots of research on the career of optometry but it's been a few years ago.

My original career was going to be an architect but my parents tried to convince me to stay in town and not move far away even though I wanted to. Also, after e-mailing a few architects and doing some research, I found that job security wasn't great. So I took a year off to college just to get a break and refresh my mind and also do some research to see what career I wanted. I made a choice and chose optometry for a variety of reasons.

My past experience may have looked bad but nothing is going to change the past. I just have to hold my head high and work hard in the future and don't let what people say hinder me from continuing and completing my career goal. In fact, I am taking this spring semester to correct everything. Fall 2008 semester and beyond I am working harder and will do much better.

that's empty talk unless you put it into action and turn them into results. really soon. g'luck and happy new year!

i graduated with a BS in psychology and have been accepted. woot!

This is not meant to discourage anyone or anything like that, its what I think.

If you look at NOVA's curriculum for 1st year, its entirely science based with the exception of 2-3 courses I think. Those science courses, appear to me, as being difficult or comparable to upper division courses. If an applicant were to take the corresponding pre-requisites and not take an additional upper division science classes, than I would imagine optometry school would be EXTREMELY difficult for that person. If I majored in anything except science, I personally would not pursue a major health care profession such as optometry. What I would suggest is taking 5-7 upper division courses relating to biology/chemistry.

good luck

Been to the ASCO site plenty of times.

I plan on getting my BS in chemistry rather than just taking pre-requisites and not get a bachelors degree first. That was my plan ever since I started college.

I majored in business, applied to three optometry schools, and got accepted to all three. Just get a good GPA and do well on the OAT and you should do fine. Good luck!
