Not smart enough for med school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i had to puzzle over this before i understood it, but what i think you are saying is that some people are concerned that they aren't cut out for med school because they aren't cut out for a science B.S.

most anyone who can complete a science B.S. has the neuronal horsepower to complete a medical degree. that does not imply that people need to be capable of a science B.S. in order to complete a medical degree, nor did i imply such.

So you're saying that people who don't have the intellectual capacity to obtain a science B.S. can still have the intellectual capacity to graduate from medical school? Isn't that a little...odd?

I always assumed the main predictors of medical school capability and success, other than the obviously given hard work, were science GPA and MCAT scores.

Well there are people who obtained a B.A. instead to go onto med school…..but they prolly did well in their science pre reqs.

Right, but I'm pretty sure they could have managed the B.S., if they wanted to.

hmm? sorry, i couldn't hear you over my raging success

Yes! you finally learned how to use the toilet, good job im so proud of you kiddo!

seriously, your retorts consist of "no you!" and "you're 5!"

at least make this interesting

^ I would but since you lack a personality, that's kind of hard lol.

it sounds odd, but i assure you it could be true (in practice, you're right - for the vast majority of med students a B.S. is quite possible)

if the only sci courses you take are the pre recs and you make A's, then you have a 4.0 science gpa. and the actual scientific concepts tested on the MCAT are very simple ones, relatively speaking. the biggest reason the MCAT is so difficult is because most people need more time to get to every question and get it right than is allowed to take the test. i happen to believe that the MCAT doesn't do anything except A) test your ability to take the MCAT, and B) generate a nice predictable curve for admissions people to use. It has nothing to say about how good a scientist you are or how good a doctor you'll be.

uGPA is only weakly correlated with med school GPA and has essentially no correlation to Step I scores at all. MCAT only slightly better. once you're in, your performance begins and ends with how hard you are willing to work.

i never took p-chem, but i'm very prepared to admit that i could have done very poorly in it. my math skills hit a wall in Calc II 🙄

Bleargh has had plenty of funny posts yo!

Stop hating playa. Just move on dude.

Good points. I think all this is pretty evident though, no?

Oh, I think that I see what you are saying.
