So I god my score on the USMLE step 1 about a month ago, and I ended up with a 247/99. While I am happy with the score, I am not sure where it places me in terms of residency match. I would like to do internal medicine. How competitive is this score in the grand scheme of things? I performed ok during my first year (maybe top 35-40% of my class), and did much better my second year (top 15-20%, with honors in all but one class). I know that programs look at everything, but if we are just talking about step 1 scores, where does a 247 put me in terms of the types of programs I should aim for?

This is an impossible question for other people to answer for you, based on how variable each individual's factors & needs are. Not to mention, IM is a very heterogeneous field. But to facilitate your own assessment of how "good" your score is, I recommend referencing:

Are you kidding me?

Also, maybe this is a good place for me to ask:

So I've got a 10 inch penis, but lately I've been reading about men with 12 inch penises. Am I still going to be able to satisfy a woman?

its not the size of the boat ... or something with waves on the ocean

although a huge boat is harder to capsize than a tiny 10 inch one...

I don't see why everyone is assuming he's trolling. It's a valid question in some ways. While the match reports tell you what scores most people got for different specialties, it really doesn't give you a feel for how competitive XXX. Yes, a 247 is very good if you want to do internal but what about internal at Harvard/JHU/Stanford/etc? Is that 247 below average, average, or above average for top internal programs? Isn't that a valid question?

Agreed. Clearly his average is stellar relative the average matching IM applicant. But if he wants to go to UCSF or Stanford I'm curious what the average step1 score is for a big name program in a coveted geographical area. Maybe he wants to know if he has leeway to relax in terms of research while remaining competitive.

It's amusing how easily people on these boards go from bragging about their 260 in one thread to mocking others for having high standards in the next thread.

It is a valid question, I agree. But unfortunately he didn't give us much else to go on, and IM is a notoriously mixed bag of goals & interests. Plus asking in the Step I forum full of M2's is definitely a poor place to ask, maybe the IM forum would be better (what do we know about how much weight a 247 would carry relative to basic science grades in a variety of IM programs)? The only thing we can do to advise is to reaffirm it's a competitive score no matter what you're going into, reflect common sense that obviously more elite programs will attract higher-end applicants, and steer him in the direction of the only reliable objective data on the matter (to my knowledge), the NRMP Charting Outcomes.

...and make jokes. Lots and lots of jokes. Some involving penises.

One of the few posts ever that made me laugh out loud.

Thank you to those of you giving me constructive answers. I am not trolling. I know that 247 is a very good score. I am just curious how competitive it is when looking at really high quality IM programs. I know I didn't give you guys much to go on (you don't know how I do at interviews, or what my clinical grades will be). As far as research goes, I did 2 years of genetics research in undergrad, and I have my name on two publications (co-author). However, I was unable to do research in med school between 1st and 2nd year due to some family emergencies that I had to take care of. Again, I appreciate those of you who have given me useful info. Thanks
