SO FRUSTRATED AHH!!

I get to register for classes on Monday. The scary thing is, I might not be able to make it in ANY Bio classes! Ecology, Cell Bio & all the upper bio classes CLOSED. Microbiology & Genetics are my last hope and they only have a few seats left! Hoping I make it in. But freaking out. This is my last year I get to squeeze in any bio courses before I take the DAT in the summer. I don't know what to do.

I feel like if I take a whole quarter off from not having any exposure to biology I'm going to be screwed.

I haven't had a lot of biology yet. I've taken the general bio 1 &2, and anatomy and physiology 1&2, but that's as far as my bio knowledge goes. Scared this won't be enough for DAT, which is why I was really hoping to get into micro/genetics. But seemings as these classes are almost full, freakin out I won't of had enough bio taught to me to do decent on DAT.

Sigh -_____- what to do. One quarter of absence from any bio classes going to hurt me? Are the science courses I've already taken enough to drag me through the DAT + the self studying?

Advice appreciated 😀

Thank yooou

You don't need upper level biology to do well on the bio part. Everything you need to know you've taken, and if you know the material very well, you'll be fine.

Focus more on chem. It's a bigger part of the test.

Micro and Genetics are really helpful for bio in my opinion. Micro for some reinforcement of DNA replication concepts, and Genetics just makes all of the genetics problems on the DAT seem like an absolute joke. Hopefully you will get them, but like others said, if you don't you are still fine. Physiology will be extremely helpful. I really wish I had that prior to the DAT.

Such a rookie.

Any class can be entered, period. How about all the people dropping out during the first week of classes? How about all the people dropping out after the first exam? Most schools have a policy of students being able register for a class at any point during the semester with permission from the instructor--it's just a matter of the professor signing a form--so check with your registrar.

Just attend your desired class, give the teacher the heads up on your game plan and you'll be officially registered at some point. In fact, I enrolled in most of my science classes from one of the above ways and never was shut out of a class. It always worked out.

I agree with this.

I wouldn't worry too much about not taking those courses. Sure, cell bio/micro/genetics might help for 5-10 questions or something, but it's all stuff that you either learned in BioI/II or will learn when you self-study for the DAT.

lollll my route exactly.
btw taylovere, if youre an actual student at that school, pursuing your bachelors in biology, cant your advisor just sign you in? aka dont they HAVE to sign you in? thats what it was like in UG for me....i got into any class i wanted i just got my advisor to sign a slip for me...
its a diff story if youre a non matriculated/postbacc student tho.

Taylor, you asked this earlier in a different thread,

but you're fine with what you have taken.

Are you aiming for a 30? 😀

Don't stress too much, you do not need upper level bio courses to do well on bio section.

The bio section is not going to ask complex biology questions. Complete knowledge of the basics is going to get you that high bio score. If you knocked out As in gen bio shouldn't be a problem

I would feel a lil awkward walking into a class I'm not registered for, hoping to 'get' a spot. Lol. Classes here are pretty small ~40-70 people and so a lot don't drop at the beginning. & how would you enter a class after the first exam had already been given? I do plan on talking with the prof to see if he can add a seat though.

I know I already asked this x_x..but I got a little freaked out. There are so many bio classes you have to take as a bio major and I feel like I won't have enough time to take them all if I don't take at least one each quarter. Just need to calm down and reassure it's not the end of the world haha.

Thank you though for the input guys 😀 I feel a lot better now.

You attend the class from Day One as though you were enrolled. Just make sure the professor knows of your plan. Thus, you'll take the exam just like everyone else. And then a week later, you'll be able to officially register when a bunch of people cry about their grades and drop out. Don't worry, no one will know that you aren't registered. It'll be your Taylor Secret.

I'm pretty sure taking a test in a class you arent officially enrolled in is considered cheating at most schools.

YoHomey was half-sarcastic on that. He just meant that she will get into class a week or two later before the register deadline lol.

I believe they reserve a few empty seats for those that really need them. It can't hurt to go to your science advisor and request a seat for a closed out class.

you don't need all that upper division bio stuff to do well the DAT.

the questions are basic concepts with few questions that are more complex
for those aiming at 30.

I know this isn't your 1st semester. You have to have seen people hoping to add on the 1st day and I"m sure you seen people who don't even show up.

If you want a class badly enough you have to get over any awkwardness you and do whatever it takes to get in.

Just get Cliff's AP Bio. It's all you really need to destroy that section.

what about biochemistry, neurobiology, or animal phyisology (if you have it).

I would. I'm so desperate. But, every single biology class I have to take is completely full.

I'm 5 hours away from being a junior and I can't get into any upper level Bio classes! It's pretty ridiculous.

There's roughly ~12k students at my university, and Biology is the second biggest major, yet they have only about 40 seats in every bio class. Doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know about your school, but can't you just request the professor to add the class, even if the class is officially "full"?

no worries anyway, i noticed you mentioned earlier about it being odd to sit in on a class without being registered. this isnt odd at all, unless you for some this doesnt sit well with you. Ive done it before, and i know others have. you can easily get into any course you desire by telling a professor a love story based on his topic of choice, and how well it would benefit you. in addition to this, you can also petition in through the registrar, and i'm sure people will drop it. dont stress the little stuff.

sidenote~~ theres also a reason the classes are full, and those students do deserve that priority to register that they currently have 🙂

Every student faces this type of problem when they are in undergrad. The trick that helped me was having upperclassmen friends who would register for my desired course, and held that spot until it was my time to register.
Because of that, I was able to register in every science class at my desired time and professor. I would try to find someone who has more credits than you to help you. Another option is to use CourseSniper, but it costs money and it may not be available for your school.

If not, ask the professor if it's possible to open a slot for you.

That doesn't work when there is a wait list for the class. When the upperclassman drops the seat they were holding, it goes toward the wait list.
