Can anyone comment on the style that the preclinical material has been delivered at Nova? There isn't a ton of info on the website. What have you liked about your preclinical years? What has been challenging? If you interviewed there, what were your impressions?

Thanks!

I'm in the BS/DO, so take this for what it's worth. The preclinical is delivered in lecture format. Powerpoints are usually posted. A & P, Histo/Pathology and OMM also have associated labs. Lectures may have DMDs and other doctoral allied health professionals in them. I can't speak to the challenge although several friends who are 2nd and 3rd year students say it is rigorous. I was interviewed, the campus is gorgeous and new. The library is wonderful. The labs are very nice. The hospital affiliations are strong. If you have any specific question about NSU in general or the COM feel free to ask.

1st year is standard basic sciences in separate classes ie biochem, physiology, anatomy, etc...classes are in lecture format, with labs where appropriate. We also have clinical practicum where we learn H&P's, physical exams and work with standardized patients, and then IGC where we are placed with a preceptor and work with them at there practice for a few hours every other week.
2nd year is systems based ie you will have cardiology and it will be everything about the heart

I'm only a first year but like it so far and think it works out nicely for me.

um....well....sorta.

powerpoints are sometimes posted (this is largely due to copyright concerns). but since most classes hand out notes, this isn't a huge issue.

there is no A & P lab, only anatomy. I'm not quite sure what a physiology lab would entail? yes, OPP, histology, and neuro have associated labs as well. we also have a clinical practicum lab every week.

dental students take histology with the M1s and (I think) neuro. mostly it's only med students in the class (+ a few master's students).

basically med schools are either lecture or pbl. nova is lecture, like most schools out there. the reality is is that the "delivery" of material will not vary from school to school all that much, aside from the professors themselves. I wouldn't put too much weight on it, anyways-med school is a lot of self-directed learning. so even if you didn't like or get much out of a lecture, it's not like you can't learn the material on your own (you have to, regardless).

What is a typical day for you like at Nova?

Do all classes have grades or is there a pass fail system also?

During your second year, does Nova provide any structured board review, or provide anyboard review materials?

How much time do you usually get after school ends in the spring to study for boards?

Thanks everyone for posts! I had an acquaintance who went to Nova, dropped out and muttered something about lots of powerpoints. One of those things to take with a grain a salt, so I wanted to get a better perspective. Waiting on an interview.

What have been your favorite experiences about the school thus far? Do a lot of people study on campus?

There's some great information here. Keep it coming!
