Can anyone tell me if there is a reason to go to Nova over FIU? I have already been accepted to Nova and am waiting to hear back from FIU, which is considerably cheaper. I always hear that Nova is a better school, but why? Am I going to get a better education? Am I going to make more money coming out of school?

I haven't heard back from FIU yet either...does anyone know when students are contacted by that school?

From my understanding, FIU doesn't have an interview process? Is that correct?

I had a tour of FIU's facilities today and was impressed by what I observed. They recently moved into a new building and had plenty of bells and whistles to compete with the better programs. They also have a more flexible class schedule, and classes are not always 5 days a week, giving the opportunity to still work. I was told the pre-PT students get an automatic acceptance into the program if they have completed all of the pre-reqs and have at least a 3.5 gpa, but they have less students meeting that criteria than they expected (good for us outsiders!) I was asked about other programs that I applied to and when I was expecting to hear back by, while I was there. I got the impression that if you are not going to hear from FIU until after a deadline, and you call their offices, they may give you an answer sooner than later. I do not have that problem, so it doesn't affect me. Overall a good experience at the school and could see myself attending FIU.

FLsurferDPT, would you mind sharing grades and scores to give others an idea of whether or not to expect to hear from FIU? Was there anything extra you had going for you?

After I posted this I found out that I've been accepted too! They only give you a week to decide if you are accepting.

i found out on Monday that I got accepted to FIU also!

i think what helped me was my work/volunteer experience in an outpatient PT clinic. total hours including work + volunteer/observation hours are 4000+.

my grades weren't the best though.
University of Florida:
Overall GPA - 2.84
Upper Div GPA - 3.4
Science/Pre-Req GPA - ~3.5
GRE - 710Q 400V

For those of you still waiting, I would say to still have hope!
(Although what everyone says is true, they take about 90%, meaning they only accept 5-7 non-FIU students, of their students from undergrad. If they have a 3.5 GPA and apply to the DPT program, they're guaranteed admission.)

AND yeah, it sucks but they give you 1 week to make a decision. But I emailed Dr. Bernstein and asked for an extension due to still waiting on couple of other schools for their decisions. I'm supposed to hear from other schools within the next 2 weeks.

Hey Guys!

I'm currently in FIU. Congratulations to the ones that received the acceptance already!

They look at the overall -upperdivision GPA. (Ibelieve they describe it as the las 60 credits) The class IS mainly FIU graduates -health science-Pre PT- however, This is changing since that major was closed and the last graduating class could be graduating this spring. I don't know if there are many students left with that major but I remember we were giving until Spring 2010 to complete our requirements. I would think the Majority graduated in 2009. I've heard NOVA is good, but I haven't heard anything GREAT about it, so honestly I don't know. The DPT is basically new in FIU and program might be changing with the new appointed chairman. However, he is actually taking students' suggestions, so I believe changes would be for the better. The schedule for first year students is 4 days a week, and the "off-day" is usually used for Open-lab sessions. I believe is a great! opportunity. I'm one of the few people that works while in the program. It's possible, very very hard!, but possible. It really depends on the job and amount of hours (I believe those workin complete an average of 20 hrs). Hope it helps!

FIU campus wasn't bad, aesthetically speaking. However, I thought the surrounding area of FIU was pretty seedy. Yes, I realize FIU's tution is a lot cheaper than NSU, which is a huge perk.. But for me, the surrounding area..is a big deal.. Especially if you are spending 3 years there. My pick is NSU.

The area is much nicer
The school is new and well maintained
Board pass rates are as competitive as other Florida schools.

The only down side of NSU is cost.. which is huge factor for many.

Not saying that I'm definitely going to NSU, I'm still waiting to hear back from UM... But I will say that NSU is my #2 choice.

I went to FIU today since I am home for spring break and checked out the new health sciences building and wow was I am impressed. The campus is beautiful and the new health sciences building is amazing!!

For those accepted, do you think we should start a facebook group?

Also, I talked with Dr. Bernstein today who was really nice and got an e-mail from him saying that there were about 700 applicants!! That means they only accepted 7 percent of the applicants! Everyone who got accepted should be really proud of themselves. =)

We just moved to the new building. Last semester we were working on the old labs....the new labs and the building are GREAT! I love it

I got accepted and will also be attending FIU PT 🙂 Im so excited!!! We should start a Facebook group!!!👍

any one apply this cycle? I was admitted last cycle but am thinking of reapplying this year since I really did like the facilities and I could commute

Yup, I applied. I saw that someone with a 2.84 overall got in last cycle. Good news for me I think. I was sure they interviewed but reading the previous post^ I can't believe they didn't. I would have to check it out myself if I get accepted. Then weigh pros and cons.

I received an email last week from Dr. Brunt from FIU of my acceptance. Just giving others who interviewed on February 12th a heads up. I also received an acceptance letter from Nova to the Ft Lauderdale/Davie campus. There are still seats available at the main campus contrary to other posts. Good luck to everyone!

Hi I received my acceptance from FIU as well. Are you going to attend??

I'm planning to attend FIU. Nova is too pricey and even though I'm still waiting on a response from UF, I think a change in cities would be nice at this point. For those wondering, UF DPT dissects cadavers where FIU DPT does not.

I also got accepted to FIU and plan on going there 🙂 ...but I really wish they used cadavers!

PTSRUS14 and SoFlaDPT, I will be joining this fall. I also have not heard back from UF which is disappointing but FIU is a lot cheaper and is near miami with beaches and a great city so it's actually alright. Also don't worry about the cadavers, I dissected human cadavers before and it's really not a big deal if you just have the cadavers already dissected for you which FIU does. I'd rather have the med students do all the work and just use their dissections to study anyways.

I think maybe we should create a facebook group when more people decide to accept. looking forward to meeting u guys!

Just got accepted into FIU as well. Recieved an email this morning confirming it. Interviewed on Feb. 12th. We should get this facebook group going, we've got 4 already here. 3 years in Miami, should be great.

i just got my acceptance email today as well...i interviewed this past Saturday (the 26th)...there were a lot of people being interviewed so i was surprised to find out so fast...i thought i was gonna be waitlisted because of the amount of people being interviewed...ill definitely be on the look out for that facebook group.

hi, i am really interested in the FIU PT program and if any of you would be so kind to share your stats and interview experiences it would be greatly appreciated

I was considering FIU and went to their admissions meeting which was really informative for me in organizing my prereq's. I asked them what their 1st time NPTE pass rate was and they said they didn't know. Most schools seem to brag about their pass rates, so I was wondering if anyone knew why they didn't have it...is it bc it's a new program or the 1st time pass rate isn't that great? But yeah the new buildings did look nice and parking to get to classes assuming all classes are in the new buildings would be a cinch.

Because it's not so great. Per the fsbpt.org website, their pass rate for 2007-2009 is only 91.01%.

does anyone have any info they can give me about their stats or the interview process?

What are the pros and cons to each school? Is one school better than the other?

Any information would be appreciated! 🙂
