I just got my NPI #. What is it used for?

Pharmacies are required to submit your NPI number on all prescription claims. We also ask you for it if you're calling in a prescription from outside the local area because it's easy to find you in the national database with your NPI if you have a common name.

You'll also need it for countless amounts of paperwork in your career. If you memorize it, people will be amazed and think you're superhuman or something (no joke--everyone is in like complete awe when I can just tell them mine). But every new pharmacy that a patient takes one of your prescriptions, unless they are connected (like a chain store) will need it and beg you for it.

It's a publicly searchable number identifying you as someone who works in health care. If you google your name and NPI, the number will likely display without even having to click into the link.
I've never bothered to learn mine, and have only rarely been asked for it. I've never had a pharmacy ask for it when calling in a script (really).

You're lucky! It might be because I've done lots of locums, so the pharmacies often didn't know me.

Anyway, if you can't remember it, Facebook and the Russians can remind you.

I use my DEA with pharmacies, whether controlled substance or not since I have that one memorized.
