I have no idea on what to do about getting extra loans on top of the $38,500 -- assuming that that's what ill receive, with private loans and such.

You need to apply separately for the private loans. To do this, you pick a lender (Sallie Mae - Medloan program, Citibank, Access Loans - this is the one I went with...) and just apply. The applications are online and you can fill them out pretty quickly. I applied for the difference between the max allowed and $38,500, which was $13,964 since I'm out of state. The loans will eventually show up on webstar with the rest of your financial aid I'm told - mine haven't yet. The website for Access is accessgroup.org, Sallie Mae

I will find out the interest rate once I am approved for the loan, but the range was low - you can get more information from the website. The $13964 is the difference between the maximum allowed according to the budget sent out by Dr. Whitehead a few months ago and the $38,500 from federal loans.

Quick Robz update....

First off, I got my financial aid award today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

The joy was only tempered by my inability to see it on the webstar and having to call financial aid.

Of course...somewhere deep inside of me already knew I was only getting 38,500. This kinda sucks. I hate having to go and get a private lender to compensate for my tuition difference. On top of that I am still awaiting to have a final word on my residency status for tuition purposes.

Anyway, enough complaining....I'm on the road in two days! Room is packed, got my money orders for my rent and cable, and I got my uhaul all ready to be picked up tomorrow....they are evil so we'll see if I have any adventures with that.

I'll be good and ready to go by the end of this weekend. That makes me a happy guy.

Anyway, I'm going to look into the sallie mae online loan info on the web tonight like kristabel said. I think I am going to take out 14,000 on top of what I was already awarded for school no matter what. Oh the joys of being in debt...I'm taking out a small car loan thats for living expenses. WEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I'm glad you finally heard - I know you must feel relieved! Good luck with the private loans - it does suck that we have to take them, but the process is (relatively) painless.

as for private loans... im reading that T.H.E. is the preferred lender of choice from a lot of ppl in the finiancial aid forum. No origination fee and guarentee fee. how are u guys making the choice of choosing a lender?

i gotta go to the FAO to speak with them directly...

Access Group also has no fees and the repayments can be deferred during residency. I chose based on some comparisons of the different lenders I had seen and based on what other people from our class were finding out. If I don't like them, I can always switch next year!!

Well I am finally all moved in down in Florida. I went to south beach on the 4th of July with a friend from Tampa and Austin. It was pretty cool minus thousands of cigarette butts on the beach. I will say it is my opinion that Ft. Lauderdale beach is nicer. In fact, I like the city of Ft. Lauderdale better than Miami.

The $38,500 is the maximum the government will allow a medical student to borrow per academic year. Which is plenty if you attend most public schools. However, people like you and I which attend private schools it may not be enough to survive and pay tuition. That is why most will get additional private loans. I checked into Sallie Mae, the preffered lender of the school, and asked if there is a guarantee fee or origination fee. It is 3% for the origination and 1% for the guarantee fee. This means Sallie Mae gets 4% of $38,500 or $1540. It makes me sick to think after 4 years owing at least $6160 that I never got to spend. So I searched for a lender that payed these fees for me. I used T.H.E. as my lender. Each lender will try to offer you repayment benefits once you graduate. I ignored these because I know I probably won't pay the government back in the required 10 years. I will consolidate my loans at a fixed rate on a 30 year repayment plan. Once you consolidate you lose all the repayment benefits offered in the initial loan.

Congrats on getting in. You guys will have a great time!

I have 2bdrm Condo at Rolling Hills (about 5min from school). Its an awesome place. Fully furnished (New furniture)...so all you would need is your toothbrush! Rent is $550 which includes everything but cable and electricity. I am a second year student, so I could give you some useful info on first year stuff. My roomate just backed out of this place so I need to find someone ASAP. PM me if you are interested.

Left....drove....unloaded...got cable/high speed internet in...went to financial aid and fixed my forms and paperwork....swam in the ocean in bath tub warm water...drank some alcohol on the beach....and now am chilling out in my new apartment! WOO HOO!

It was a 13 hour trip in a Uhaul and no problems except 5pm traffic on friday in Atlanta. My Uhaul ran awesome and I'm now trying to adjust to the fact I live around Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area....a lot more traffic and peolpe here than I typically am used to.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. If you'all can't tell I made it to Ft. Lauderdale and I'm back on the internet.

I thought I would post a few fun facts for those that find amusement in my ponderings.

1. I knew the drivers here were crazy....but these people are friggin insane! I swear every day I see almost 3 or 4 accidents about to occur.

2. I found 4 walmarts near my apartment....they are old and busted....the new hotness super walmart is in pembroke pines and its 30 minutes from my doorstep to the parking lot on hollywood blvd...the prices are worth it and it is super sweet. It was a good find.

3. I found it is further to the super walmart (30mins) then it is to the beach (20mins) from my apartment.

4. Gas and a lot of other crap here is frigging expensive for me. 2 bucks a gallon a gas....DAMN (those from CA or chicago are excluded from bitching)

5. The water temp at the beach is really really friggin sweet. It was colder to get out of the water than it was to stay in. I was really loving it.

6. Coming from Tennessee there is a lot of diversity here...which is a cool thing.

7. When they say heat index of 105 then mean heat index of a 105

8. I was treated very well and quickly at the HPD financial aid office. I was in shock but very appriciative.

9. Pools are very good things.

10. Its easy to drive around here due to the grid design of the roads but again the drivers are friggin nuts.

11. Just like in orlando...the ale house has some sweet ass food...go there.

12. 3 weeks from today is our orientation.....its so close.

I dunno where the winn dixie is...I have seen about 5-6 publix, 4-5 walmarts, one super target, a billion small shops all hidden by palm trees so you can't see what's behind them, a huge ass home dept, a couple of lowes, a bunch of malls, and one school called sova southeastern university with a bunch of kids in scrubs outside it.

Publix BTW has sweet boars head mets in thier deli.

Starbucks is cool....I think I saw 2 or 3 of them just on University Drive alone.
I'm thinking nice chocolate turtle....MMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

During your orientation week, you should be wearing professional clothes and not scrubs, unless they changed something in the past year. Nice pants, a nice shirt, etc. You don't need to wear a suit.

As far as residency issues----you won't find out for sure until either the week prior to orientation or actually AT orientation, if I remember correctly. I hope this answers a few questions. If there are more.......please post them.

By the way....I am looking forward to having you M1s on campus. It is lonely being the only medical students here 😀

I went to Key West today....ate at a shack on a street called B.O.'s and had my picture taken at the southern most point in the U.S. Then I drove my butt back.

It would be a short trip except for the friggin 45 MPH speed limit and one lane highways to the Keys. This added with insane people tailgating in my trunk and the unbelieveable insane traffic off the turnpike getting onto I-75. WOW....so much traffic. I did get a great view of palmetto general though. 🙄

I now live in Davie, FL! I moved into Poinciana Lakes this week, and I'm friggin' stoked about it.

I wish I could say that I've been d!ckin' around, but I've been working at PF Chang's China Bistro in Boca Raton. I fuggin hate it. The money is actually sweet, and the people are really nice, but i hate it. I think I'm just going to stop showing up after this friday. I'm going to drive back to Ohio to drop of my piece of **** truck which doesn't have A/C 😱 and I'm going to have my dad buy me a old assss Honda Civic WITH a/c.

Whatever.

I've been drinking.

I'm a laid-back guy, I like to party, and I'm looking forward to med school. I'm willing to work my butt off, and I think that studying until 3 in the morning is cool. Science is cool. I have pretty much had my fill of the bar scene (for a while anyway) and am ready to apply myself to something that matters.

I turn 25 on Tuesday, I went to Ohio State, and Rolling Rock is tasty .

Consider this my intro. Can't wait to meet y'all.

Yes...our driving habits in South Florida do suck! And the traffic is a bummer 😡 Avoid the Plametto expressway at any cost.... I-95 can be a b!tch as well..sotry and use the turnpike and I-75 as much as possible

Key west is pretty cool, and I suggest in investing in a radar detector if you dont wanna deal with the speed limit thing. Mine has saved my but numerous times.

Never been to PF Changs...I'm too lazy to drive to Boca Raton to go to one too. Too much good food around here. (Plus Outback is a half a block from me)

The Keys were cool. I always wanted to take the drive down there and see everything. What I was truly suprised about was there wasn't a lot of beach area to go and chill out at. I brought my trunks and my towel but I didn't find a sweet beach like Ft. Lauderdale beach. What you will find is a touristy like town. They have a neat hardrock thats like a converted old home and most of the streets are filled with mopeds and electric rental cars. Its worth a wonder and its a stop for some cruise ships. To me it felt like a small carribbean town that you'd visit on a cruise...except its america.

when i went to the keys, it mostly resembled fishy waters with mangroves everywhere. rolling tarpons were normal, but i didnt see any white sand beaches.

idk, key west reminded me of the small tourist towns in maui.

I've been going to the beach as well as playing poker online all day cause my roomates aren't here. anyway, anyone still having problems with financial aid??? they're still tellin me that they don't have all my documents even though I sent them over a month ago......

other than that......i think i'm gonna hang out with some topless ladies on south beach today 🙂

I cant belive how fast time is going. Orientation will be here before you know it soooo.....get ready to have your butts kicked at Osteoblast! Dress nicely for orientation week. We were allowed to wear scrubs or a t-shirt and shorts to the Basic Life Support class. You can wear scrubs on the first day of class - most people did. Some dressed up; it really doesn't matter. Just remember how long you have to sit in class though (I LOVE scrubs). Glad to hear some of you are finally making it down! Enjoy the beach while you can. See you soon.
