NSU-COM Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Probably going to other residencies after the trad year that were unlinked to internships, ie anesthesia, urology. So the matchlist shows up as a traditional year 🙂 That list isn't complete I don't think, there was someone who went to UAB for surgery

I have a question for you current NSU students. I plan on working on Saturdays when class starts in the fall. Is this being realistic? Will there be time? At some schools I interviewed at the students talked about how much free time they had and about how many of the students had part/full time jobs, but at NSU I didn't get a feel for if this. Do many of the med students at NSU work?

Could someone tell me how to set up my e-mail so I can post to the listserv? I can send messages to other addresses. Thanks-

Well i'm not a current student, but I'm almost positive that I have heard on two seperate occasions from two different people at the school that students aren't allowed to work? Plus, you have to keep in mind we're gonna have tests every monday.

There are students that work. I don't know of a policy forbidding it...but it happens. I know several ppl who teach Kaplan and other MCAT prep courses, and several others who do various other things. I would say less than 5% of the class works though.

I would say that it is unrealistic for most students to pull off working on Saturdays unless your job allows you to study. With tests every Monday, most people need Saturday to study. You could more realistically work a Monday night or a Tuesday night--as this is when most of your free time is.

can someone explain to me why 43 grads went into traditional rotating.

Were they undecided? Unable to land a residency they wanted?

Other reasons?
I am pretty sure that FL is one of the few states that "requires" a traditional internship year. Either it has to be built into the residency you take, or you have to actually do one. We have more ppl here that plan to practice in FL, thus a higher number of ppl taking the traditional year than most other schools. I believe this tends to be potentially more of an issue for the allopathic residencies than it does for the osteopathic ones. If I had to guess, those 43 are going into more competitive allopathic residencies.

I know two people that started last semester working, as I know they both quit, if that tells you anything. I just don't see anyway to do it unless its like odd jobs and such

One of the five osteo strongholds, FL, OK, MI, PA, & WV. (I believe that's rigth). Have to do a DO internship to get licensure in these states. Not an issue if you don't want too. I have heard that it's on its way out the window, and I'm sure it will be in time, but who knows how soon.

lots of ppl emailing on the listserv. if school hasn't even started, i wonder how much email i would get every day while in class (you crazy emailing bastards!, 44 msgs in 2 days!).

Hey everyone! This is a question for current students...what books would you recommend getting? Do you need the supplemental books that are 'recommended' for a class in addition to books that are required? Which atlas would you recommend? Also, do you recommend getting the books on amazon or at the school store (are there sales?)

Thanks in advance!

Amazon is probably cheaper. I would wait til you get here...there are always 2nd years selling their books much cheaper than you can buy them anywhere. Also, MOST of the books are totally not needed.

In fact, the best physio book is not required or recommended (Costanzo), Netters Atals comes with your SOMA membership (who puts out your test packet), etc. During your orientation you will get a "survival guide" from the M-2s. With no faculty present, we will come in and tell you the down low on all the professors, what books, what to study, etc...

I woudln't buy anything now....save your $$ (unless you are military--whole different ballgame 😉). If you want to read up before school starts, just pick a book off the shelf @ Barnes and Nobles/Borders and read there.

Anyone else get screwed on how much loan money is being awarded because they worked full time? I guess the Gov. thinks I should have saved 20K of my 27K income. Maybe if I lived in a van down by the river. 😡 👎

how do you check how much they allow you to have?

You will get an email on your Nova account. It will tell you to check webstar.

Does anyone need a roommate?

Did anyone else see how far down SDN ranked us? What is up with that? Schools who haven't even been established nor graduated their first class are ranked above us.

if US news cant accurately rank schools...I would hardly even regard SDN rankings as anything...dont worry ive got faith in NSU 🙂

is anyone here applying for the NHSC scholarship?

Hey all 🙂

Does anyone have any ideas for the get together? like when and where? i am willing to help in the planning. i'm down here in north miami beach. god bless

So I just joined the list serve, does everyone do an intro?

Also... random question for anyone who lives in the area... do you know of any Tile superstores or any other stores to get cheap floor tiles. The seller of my condo f*cked me over.

Yea and if you look at the break down of each ranking, they consider how nice the area its located in and fun the area is. Now I see why Hopkins is 17th on that list...

I was just curious what the average age for our class is gonna be? Im 24

Uh, I'm 26. Not sure about the avg.

for those of you who wanted to know about ap scores. Delia told me that they must be sent from the college board directly. This sucks, now i gotta pay for the Ap record to be sent 🙁

So whats going on with this UNNICO and SEIU strike issue the president has been emailing the study body about? Sounds like time to bring in the Pinkertons...

You got your award letter already? I called the Financial Aid office and they said that they will not process the 2006-2007 awards until May. This is weird.
I really want to know my financial aid status so I can prepare early.

Yup, got it already. Keep checking your NSU e-mail for the award letter.

Annie actually went to the fin aid office..and they said they wouldnt process until June....so yea..obviously something is not right....

Actually, this is how it was last year. I didn't get my awards 'till June because they work in order with the different schools in HPD (PT's and Nursing actually start before us or something) our turn is in June. Then I got our money like 3 or 4 days before school started. It was OK, as long as you fill all your paperwork correctly and set up direct deposit...

I just signed up for facebook, I'm getting excited to start!

God Bless!

NSU got shafted in the rankings. I just wrote a letter to SDN explaining why the ranking system is flawed and used NSU vs. LECOM Bradenton as an example....After seeing both schools, no offense to LECOM B., but NSU blows that school out of the water...I urge anyone who cares, (may not be many), to send feedback to SDN and defend our school! or at least attack the credibility of the ranking system: why would you rank schools based solely on interview feedback anyways? there are too many problems with that. i do not understand...
