The purpose of this post is to give pre-pharm students a glimpse of what the Nova Southeastern College of Pharmacy is all about. You will not get this version from your interview team at NSU.

Firstly, I am not here to bash NSU. I am simply trying to forewarn students to help them make a better decision about thier education. I would like to give you an accurate tour of this college. My affiliation as a student will remain anonymous.

I will start off with admissions. If you are anything but a hispanic female/male, please do not bother applying here. The class make up is misrepresented in every statistic I have seen published. That is not to say there are not other ethnic groups present, but there is clear favor and in my opinion (discrimination) taking place. NSU's way to get around discrimination is to have a very small percentage of other ethnic groups. If you take a look at the class roster, it is astounding. Another large and disturbing amount of staff here are not even citizens of the US.

Moving on, a very large and disturbing majority of classes here are taught by teleconference.....from Puerto Rico. Most of your teachers are going to be from Puerto Rico, and you will never see them besides for on a projected screen. The teleconferenced classes are CONSTANTLY cutting in and out, and causing problems with audio, and video feed.
Just this morning a class was canceled due to problems with video feed.
This is not an effective teaching method. Good luck with exams....since all of the materials must be sent to Puerto Rico or other locations for grades, this means there are at least 4 or 5 carriers between the time you actually get your grade. Scary. When you actually DO get a live professor, they usually have massive issues with losing staff - so be prepared to sit out in the hallways or have very bad issues of crowding.

Tests: Due to high staff turnover, your tests will usually be running late. There are never enough seats, so mass confusion ensues. They are late to get extra chairs, so you will end up sitting on the ground before they can seat you for an EXAM.

Student Research: Absolute joke. The "student research labs" are abandoned. They are left in deplorable conditions, and in several cases in clear violation of OSHA standards. Chemicals from 1985 are sitting in these labs, acids are sitting in the same locations as flammables, broken fume hoods, poor ventilation, unlabled chemicals, ect. Recently, one student was forced to call the firedepartment and the whole building was evacuated because of a faulty CO2 canister that had the potential to explode. She was relocated AGAIN due to unknown chemical vapors being emitted from the lab. Much of the research equipment is broken and/or from the 1980s. The rat labs are just sad. 5/6 rats in one bin at a time is just wrong.

After visiting thier research labs, I was afraid for my own health. Ask for a chance to go inside one of the labs if you are at the interview....when you go down the hallway, you will notice that this entire area is empty. There are very questionable things going on in this school.

All in all, you will most likely get through. You may graduate and recieve your PharmD. But the school is a joke. The faculty are a joke. They have tried to cut down on as many professors as they possibly can so they they get more $$$$, in addition to increasing class size with a large number of international students. The video conferencing is rediculous, and good luck understanding your professors. Please think about how much money you are shelling out for your education. I truly feel sorry for students that put out this much money, and get absolute incompetence from faculty in return.

Thanks for your insight..

I live in the area and have done a lot of research with NSU interns and recent graduates. I've heard that the teleconferences only take place at the palm beach campus and those professors are based at the main campus in Davie. So teleconferences are also taking place at the main campus? How many classes are doing this? I haven't heard about this one yet, but I will definitely seek more information on that.

Thanks

wow, thats pretty shocking. I'd always heard good things about Nova and it's one of my top choices since it's close to where I live. Are you talking about the main Ft Lauderdale campus?

So let me get this straight...your status says pre-pharm. Are you a student at NSU?

Because my experience there (just graduated in May) couldn't be any different from what you've stated.

So what do you plan on doing now that u r already in the program. It will be terrible to see 4 years of tuition go in vein.

Thanks for your insight..

I still love to become a student of NSU. Why? Learn from difficulties. Even though the tuition is so expensive. But you know, Nova has a perfect place for me. Well, thanks for telling me about NSU. I hope they will fix that later on. As long as I have my PharmD. I can do something else.

I have no choice. I only apply to NSU. I guess NSU is not the only school as what he stated.

At the main campus in Davie, you will be taking teleconferenced classes from West Palm, Puerto Rico, and sometimes Tampa. There are teleconfereced classes at ALL locations. It is laughable. Don't let them tell you the BS....they will sugar coat everything, they are basically salesmen for the school. Several classes are doing it.....pretty much all the courses are being teleconferenced to somewhere...whether it be kids getting shafted at the main campus, west palm, or puerto rico. Someone is on the recieving end.

I'm glad you can agree with me on some of this stuff. Many of the students are just frustrated with the incompetent system they have here.

I am a student now but I will not say which year (I would like to keep my identity anonymous) - I have heard of kids getting kicked out of thier dental program for opening their mouths about certain things. Their is even a thread just like this one in the dental forum somewhere about NSU.

Calm down friend! I know many pharmacists are students from NSU. Be positive!!! As long as you can learn knownledge that you are supposed to learn in the school, you are good to go. I understand the difficulties that you encounter in the school, but think about a great future, forget about what you see right now. We just hope they will find more teachers later on in the future. 🙂

I've been seeing negative threads on sdn about a lot of health schools at Nova. First the dental school, the optometry school, and now this

I did my unergrad at Nova and even though they have brought some new buildings the science building and the labs are scary, much like you described at the pharm school...if not worse!!!!

I've agreed with many of your threads, except this one. The OP never said he/she was quitting! He is bringing to light negatives about the school that many applicants could use in making a decision (given the choice, of course). I live near NSU and my first choice is UF!!!!!!! Here, I'll share something: a recent pharmacy grad student at NOVA even told me to "strongly consider UF!" She thought highly about UF students; they seem better prepared clinically, retail etc... Now of course there are great students at NSU, but that was not the point. She got admitted there, so she went. You've said one thing correct: you can do something with a PharmD. That is correct! Go ahead, apply there! Heck, I'm applying there. Do I have a choice?

I just received an invitation for an open house at UF. When I saw the envelope with UF sign, I thought my heart skipped a beat. Then I realized they are not sending invitations for interview at least until after January!

I just happened to come across this thread and can't agree more. I live right down the street from NSU and have plenty of friends in all medical related fields there and have heard really bad things about them.

I will not go into detail but I will be applying to UF and hoping to get in rather then NSU.

😉

Well, I still remember the time when I was in my country. I studied in a little room which looked like a rat cave.

I've been seeing negative threads on sdn about a lot of health schools at Nova. First the dental school, the optometry school, and now this

Yeah the entire "HPD" department has issues. I started hearing wierd things when i first came here from certain fed up staff members, and now I realize what they were talking about.

Wow...just wow.
As a current P1 at Nova at the Davie campus, there are some things that should be clarified regarding the top post:

Regarding the teleconferences: So far, majority of the classes have been taught at Davie campus. The teachers do occasionally(2-3 times) go to the other sites, in Puerto Rico and WPB, to teach their courses and they haven't been cut out due to connecting problems. It's actually a very neat system they have set up, where the only difference is that you can't see in front of the podium. Instead, when the teachers are at other sites, you see them on a monstrous projection screen. You are not missing anything!

Tests: Sitting on the floor? I've already taken 6 exams so far, and there are always enough seats. For some exams you take them in the room you are in, and in other they take you to an auditorium across from your class where they seat every other chair..which means that there are at least double the amount of seats for exams. Seating is not a problem at all, (they should probably have accepted more people ...there are a couple open chairs/desks available 😛 )

Overall, I'm really enjoying myself at NSU and don't find it a waste of money or time. Don't judge by what one person says about the school, come check it out yourself.

Also, I'm a white american, and there is no preference for being hispanic, my class is a nice melting pot, and there is no majority ethnic group in my class or favoritism towards those that are being used for statistical reasons.

If anyone wants to ask more, I'll answer any questions you might have!
(Now that i just finished Biochem and A&P exam back to back..it's time to celebrate by getting some nice 😴 )

Thanks for your input.. It really helps to hear both sides of the story, especially when it's your top choice school 🙂

Nice, I like NSU better the other schools. I know sometimes school has issues, but things get old. They will fix it.

hey i agree.. i wanted to respond to this earlier but like endurorider, i had 2 tests with him/her and now im relaxing.

dude, no matter where you go for pharmacy school.. they are bound to have problems, but do you think that the ACPE will let a problem go on for long? uhh no. for one thing, accreditation doesnt mean you can slack off. no, it is renewed every 5 or so years so all schools have got to be up to par. afterall, no one wants an incompetent pharmacist serving their needs.

again, like endurorider, i see no problems in taking test..the lectures, the staff... its fine for me so far too and i love this school so far. its great.

also, like i said earlier, all schools have their problems. its just not aired in public. i know a lot of schools with loads of problems but its not well known because no one chooses to make it public. but in the end, i am confident that all schools with their various problems will fix itself in time. as a student, i can confidently say that if tehre is a problem that really affects the students, we stand together and we will voice our concerns and action will be taken. i can say my class is not gonna take any crap that is going to affect our education and im sure people in other schools will feel the same. no one ever wants to repeat another HICP incident.

soo overall.. you can choose to believe jacky treehorn? or what not.. but just know all schools arent perfect. its really all down to trusting your gut instinct. if u think something is wrong, then follow your gut. thats my 2 cents

ugh .... what?

He did just what you recommended. 😉 😛

Ok... My 1st choice is UF! My other 1st choice is NOVA! :meanie:

 A lot of labs are like this actually even in big research institutions. Don't know what that weird brown liquid is in the hood, just put it in the back and use the hood anyways. The hood is the general dumping ground for the unknown...lol. The labs always seem to get evacuated at least once a year for something leaking or spilled. Not enough people to check that working standards are up to safe levels, but people don't really follow the safety rules anyways.

who is 'he'?

i am saying to trust your gut regardless of what people say. albeit, i was bothered by what jacky treehorn said, but i couldnt really deny anything that i dont know. i just wanted to let the others know that some things i read arent true. and that they should just believe their own gut rather than the instinct of someone else to make their decision about Nova

ugh .... what?

He did just what you recommended. 😉 😛

Ok... My 1st choice is UF! My other 1st choice is NOVA! :meanie:

If there is such a major issue, students can make complaints to the ACPE. If they receive enough complaints, they can go for an interim site visit and see what is truly happening.

You are a P1.....as they say "P1s know nothing". Just wait, and prepare thy recti. As for ethnic favoritism, what are you smoking? Whatever it is, I'd like some, hahaa.

Fortunately for you, you are taking a lot of didactic course bull****. So you are lumped in with a lot of other students, and you have not exactly hit the brunt of the bull**** that I speak of. Just wait.

People don't follow the safety rules? Trained faculty neglecting safety lab standards in this way are liable for a major whistleblowing incident that could involve a big lawsuit. I have been around many academic labs, and NSU's labs are unacceptable. What I am trying to tell you is that they are knowingly breaking the law with OSHA violations.

I for one do not care to work in a lab where everyone dumps "the brown liquid" into the back of the hood. Sorry, but I value my brain cells and other organs. Have you not heard of chemical exposure? Law firms all over the country are making lots of money thanks to idiots who don't follow safety rules.

lol...what kind of crackpot third world university did you go to??

This thread is ironic. Today, the firedepartment and police evacuated the building AGAIN. This time for another unknown chemical leak or some garbage. This is the second time in two days. Saturday, the firedepartment evacuated the building for a natural gas leak. Rediculous...kids were pulled out of exams and classes for 3 hours.....

At least there is some security over there.

4th time....fire department evacuated the clinic building AGAIN today for ANOTHER gas leak. Evacuations are a daily occurrence here now...saturday, yesterday, today...tomorrow?

Hmmm... My detective instincts tell me that this is probably the same JackieTreehorn that was banned from the forums not too long ago. I'd venture a guess that this post is intended to arouse emotions. anyone else smell a troll??:bullcrap:

Nice work there sherlock! You should go work for CSI

On a serious and intelligent note, why the hell would someone come back with the same name that they were banned with? That makes no logical or rational sense. Have you ever thought that I had no idea a previous Jacky Treehorn existed?

Jacky Treehorn is a fictional character from one of the best movies ever produced, "The Big Lebowski".

Why then, are you posting in both the pre-dental and pre-pharmacy forums when you're a pharmacy student at Nova?

If you're not the same person, then I do sincerely apologize.

I have some sort of affilitation with NSU. I am keeping that anonymous. I may be a student, I may not be. I am not pre-pharmacy though. I need to change that...

Lets just say I have been around the pre-health circle a few times 😀

Yeah, seems like a troll to me. The posts about the school are too outrageous.
normal people just say their piece and move on. the harping on the "problems" of the school are just plain annoying now. the way they're describing it, you think i would've been evacuated, myself, when I was there for an interview this past week.
